I'm so glad to have this band coming to the farm. I've wanted them at Bonnaroo for a while and am so glad to get them here. They play a classic rock and roll type sound and have some awesome rock covers (they do an amazing "Maybelline" cover from Chuck Berry). They play with tons of energy and have gotten better and better since I first saw them a few years ago. Below is a brief summary of the band from the lead singer/founder of the group from their website:
About Deer Tick
We formed in December, 2004 in Providence, RI.
After many lineup changes, this is what we've ended up with:
John J. McCauley III (guitar, vocals, website designer) - top left Ian P. O'Neil (guitar, vocals) - top right Rob B. Crowell (keys, organ, saxophone, vocals) - not pictured Christopher D. Ryan (bass, vocals) - bottom left Dennis M. Ryan (drums, vocals) - bottom right
Q&A with John McCauley by John McCauley:
What's new with Deer Tick?
We've just put out our new album called The Black Dirt Sessions on June 8th, 2010.
What's the deal with Deer Tick?
I, John, have written the bulk of our songs. Lately, its been more of a band effort. Ian has contributed a few songs to our live show that we hope to record soon. Dennis is working on some songs that we'll integrate into our catalogue, too. We've got three albums under our belt: War Elephant (2007), Born On Flag Day (2009), and The Black Dirt Sessions (2010). We also released an EP, More Fuel for the Fire, in 2009.
Basically we play all sorts of music and are heavily influenced by legend status songwriters and performers, like Tom Petty and Sammy Davis, Jr. We consider ourselves a rock n roll band. Our live shows sometimes tend to go a bit haywire. We like to put on memorable shows, the kind of shows that you don't see very often. If you don't want to get covered in beer or confetti at one of our shows, I'd suggest not standing up in the front.
We also like doing cover songs. Some songs, like "These Old Shoes", are written by friends of ours; whereas other songs, like "La Bamba", are traditional Mexican folk songs. We've covered a good number of songs from artists such as Hank Williams, John Prine, Nirvana, The Beatles, Michael Hurley, The Sex Pistols, The Replacements, Sean Kingston, The Shivers, Warren Zevon... I could go on for awhile, but I'd like to let you know that we're working on a few new surprise covers that we'll be pulling out this year.
I named the band Deer Tick after taking a hike in Indiana with my good friend Brendon Massei, who you may know as Viking Moses. I discovered a deer tick on my scalp later that evening. Surprisingly, growing up in Rhode Island and frequently going on camping and fishing trips as a youngster, I had managed to go 19 years of my life without ever getting a tick. Some folks have taken offense to the name, but its not like we're advocates or parasitic arachnids, I just thought it sounded cool. I'd also like to note that I had never heard of Deerhoof or Deer Hunter until it was too late. Sorry guys.
We've played our asses off since the beginning and do not foresee slowing down anytime soon. Here's a few folks we've had the privilege of sharing the stage with: Neko Case, The Felice Brothers, Dr. Dog, Those Darlins, Holy Sons, Nas, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Jenny Lewis, J.D. Souther, Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Dead Confederate, A.A. Bondy, you get the picture. We'll be making our return to Europe in September! I'm sure there's much more awesome stuff ahead this year than the four of us could imagine, and we'd like to thank our fans for their continued support. See you out on the road, Tickheads!
Below are some videos of the band. be sure to check these guys out if you like any of this.
Baltimore Blues No. 1
Easy
Houston, TX
Hope is Big
Maybelline (Chuck Berry cover)
Below is my favorite song from the new album. It's about 11 minutes long (2 videos) but it's awesome and gives you a feel for how rocking/jamming they can get. It's called Mange and has a brief section of Taking Care of Business in there as well. enjoy.
I had this whole long thing written out and proboards locked me out.
Awesome job ITM
One of my top 10 to see.
If it was for Deer Tick you can post it here if you feel like re-typing it all lol.
Yea they're a top act to see for me as well. I'm guessing they may be a Thursday act but i'm not totally sure. They're new album is pretty awesome and all the new songs they play live are great.

Nah, haven't heard of Viking Moses. I got into Deer Tick because they opened for Felice Brothers and I was hooked. I think they're even better now with the Ian, new lead guitarist (formerly from Titus Andronicus) and the guy on piano. They've been kicking ass lately and I'm seeing them along with Dawes and Middle Brother (the new side project) in like 2 weeks. I'll have some Deer Tick videos from then and I'll post 'em here.

I was so excited to see Deer Tick on this lineup. I am from Massachusetts and I have seen this band a bunch of times in Providence and Boston. I am going to see them on 3/3 in Boston with Dawes and Middle Brother. Hopefully Middle Brother gets added later. I am not sure why they are so low on the lineup, I thought more indie fans new Deer Tick. If you haven't listened to War Elephant, download it now!

Woah. I did not know that.
And both of you guys seeing Middle Brother?!? I wanna know how that is.

Yea the show I got is Middle Brother as the main act (I believe) while Deer Tick and Dawes will be playing full sets as well. It's a stacked 3-act concert. I can't wait.

I'm in love with Black Dirt Sessions, their newest. The first two are also amazing and have so many great songs but the new album has so much win in it. I dig all the songs.

I will give a full review of the Boston Middle Brother show. So far I've only heard the 2 tracks they have released, "me, me, me" and "Middle Brother". Both songs are awesome! I saw Deer Tick and Dawes separately in Boston in November, and they both played great. I think Middle Brother could end up bigger than both bands.

Yea they've turned Mange into an epic 10 minute song that they play towards the end. It's pretty awesome.
For everyone: Here's a pretty recent, awesome quality recording of a live show from nyctaper.com. Completely FREE to download: www.nyctaper.com/?p=3591
I listen to it a lot and made this artwork for my iPod:
that first post is great. I'm a Dawes fan and found Deer Tick and Delta Spirit through Middle Brother (which is great btw), I appreciate the background info. There's 3 more CDs to wear out until Bonnaroo.

I saw these guys open for Grace Potter and thought they were really boring. BUT, this is not a negative post. I saw them again opening for Dr Dog and the last few songs were so energetic and intense. It was like a totally different band. I'm def willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe the first show was the anomaly.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
Thanks for the awesome thread.. people need to hear this band! Middle Brother (Deer Tick, Delta Spirit, Dawes) are playing a show by me, and it says Deer Tick and Dawes are also playing, but maybe they're just saying what bands they are from to sell more tickets. But if they are, I could totally see Middle Brother, Dawes and maybe Delta Spirit being added to the lineup this year!

Dawes and Deer Tick will be playing at that show as well. 3 sets from 3 bands. Should be great.
I've been wanting to see Deer Tick for a couple years now and still haven't had the chance. Seeing them on the farm, for the first time, is gonna be quite a treat.

I saw them at ACL a few years back and just recently saw them open for Dr. Dog. They keep getting better and better. I think ITM reference them doing "Maybelline" which they did in Nashville not too long ago and they killed it. Also did a great "La Bamba" cover. They really bring the energy and they are a ton of fun to see, I'm VERY excited they'll be here.

Here's a mix I was putting together for Wolfman Jess but figured everyone could use it as a way to hear some select songs. I took a few songs from each album and a handful of tunes from the Live at Maxwell's show (that was posted in full above). It's 16 tracks and a little over an hour.
1.) Ashamed - the first song from the first album (War Elephant). Really good little tune. 2.) Maybelline - Live cover of a Chuck Berry song. This is one of a few songs that the new lead guitarist Ian O'Neil sings and he really commands the attention of the room. He's amazing at that fast rock guitar. 3.) Houston TX - from the second album (Born on Flag Day). It's a nice little country/folky sounding song. 4.) Hope is Big - A live version of a new, unreleased song. Ian sings this one too and it's a favorite song of mine. Hope it's on the next album. 5.) Smith Hill - another song from the second album. Well-written heartbreak song. 6.) When She Comes Home - live version of a great song from the new album. This one reminds me of some Neil Young and Crazy Horse stuff. 7.) Twenty Miles - studio version of a song from the newest album (Black Dirt Sessions). Compare the sound of this one to the first track to see a bit of progression/maturing in the sound and voice. 8.) Axe is Forever - from an EP (more fuel for the fire). This song has an old school type sound. Not sure how to describe it. 9.) Baltimore Blues No. 1 - One of the first songs that really caught my eye. This is the album version and I've always loved the line "No doubt....i'd sell you out for a pocket full of silver and gold". Just the way he delivers the lines on here are great. 10.) Piece by Piece and Frame by Frame - a song from the newest album....gets kinda screamy on this one but it's a good song. 11.) Bury Deep - another new/unreleased song. Pretty solid tune and I think Ian (lead guitar) sings this one as well. 12.) Straight Into a Storm - high quality live version of this song. This was from the EP and is a pretty heavy rocking song. 13.) Dirty Dishes - this is a cool thing they've been doing lately. I've seen them using more harmonizing lately, especially on this tune. There's some instruments on this but they focus a lot on the vocals. Just a really well-written song as well. 14.) Easy - one of the best songs. Just listen. 15.) Cheap Sunglasses - amazing cover of ZZ Top's song. 16.) Mange - my favorite tune from the new album....this is a live version where they really rock/jam out. expect to see this at Bonnaroo.
