So I was wondering: is anyone on here working in academia, hoping/anticipating to work in academia, or just in grad school?
This might be good for networking, job postings, conferences (including lodging for conferences), or whatever else I might be neglecting to include.
As for myself, I'm in a MA program with the hope and desire of doing and finishing a PhD and going on to teach college from there.
Edit: Initially I made this thread to discuss working in or working towards a job in academia, but I figured I'd broaden the topic- and thus: "Inforoo and Higher Education".
Tell us about your (post)-post-secondary education!

I'd like to be an English or Literature professor at a college or university some day as well. I put off college for a while after high school, though, so I am still working at my undergrad. After I attain my BA, though, I fully intend to apply for several graduate schools; I'm not sure yet if I went to go for an MFA in Creative Writing or a literature Phd...guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I know of at least one active member on here (his name is NTRT) that is a college-level English professor.

Irony. It's hard to define.
Haha...for those keeping score at home, the "d" and "n" keys are not close together on the keyboard.
I'm studying philosophy. In particular Continental philosophy focusing on 20th cent. French thought, 19th cent. German thought, and political philosophy. There's some overlap with literature (in particular Sartre and Camus), but not a whole lot.
For that responded, what's your focus and main interests?
I'm in my AAS Culinary Arts program and will continue to get my BA through Johnson & Wales in the near future. It's rather hard to find a masters program in Culinary Arts. My best hope is to move through the ranks of Sous Chef, Chef de Cuisine, executive Chef and finally Master Chef ( More than a TV show).
I don't think I'll ever make Master. I'd be content with CCC or CEC. For right now I'm just pushing along and getting my lab hours.
Not at all what you guys are talking about. It's just on my mind.

Applying to grad school currently with the hopes of entering an MSN (nursing) program, followed by probable Doctorate of Nursing and subsequent professorship. Dr. Nurse. hehehe.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Hey, that's a great program at J&W! I am biased because my dad used to be head of their Practicum Program. Best of luck with your studies.

Oh yeah, and I work for Boston University, in IT. I'd like to go back to school for art or music (both things I also do professionally but never got a degree in), but I'm not sure my brain still works for taking instruction. One of these days...

Ha! Good catch.
I'm currently wrapping up my last few classes and will be graduating in May with a B.A. in communications and a minor in politics and history. I'm thinking about heading to grad school in five years or so, probably for either a masters in English, or maybe an advanced communications degree - it all depends where I can get in and what programs they offer, though.

Based on what I've read in the 'What's for Dinner' thread, I was wondering if you were studying/studied culinary arts. You make some serious dishes!

Aren't you able to take classes for free, or at the very most at a discounted rate, if you work at a university?
I'm hoping to wrap up my career in practice in about 15 years or so and move on to teaching. I'd love to spend my last 10+ years pre-retirement as a law professor - great schedule, good pay, good benefits, summers off. I'd also enjoy having the time to research/write on things that interest me. Who knows if it'll ever happen, but we'll see.
If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your J.D. from?
international disaster psychology. and i am a refugee social worker
what about you? i love philosophy... what do you see yourself doing?
That's really interesting, did your university have that program, or did you piece it together yourself? Where did you go?
Practically speaking, I hope to teach at the college level- ideally graduate courses, but I guess I gotta earn my stripes first! I'm not too keen on the idea of teaching philosophy 101, but we all have to do it. Really though, I just want publications. I'm much more interested in producing written work and research than I am in teaching. But who knows, I'm TA-ing next semester so maybe that'll change my mind.

Aaaah, drinking & self-editing mix like oil & water, eh?

hey we need to meet/talk. I just finished my MSN 2 years ago, trying to decide whether to go for the DNP, MPH or just say screw it and finally start seriously working on my novel.
I have taught before in an adjunct capability as clinical instructor and totally loved it....I felt so at home teaching. Unfortunately teaching positions don't pay the salary that I need right now to support my family

You'd think that was for class. But no this is how we eat here. I'm getting excited as the warmer weather happens so we can start to grill out and have friends over. The funny thing is I don't wanna be a chef for a living. I want to own a coffee shop that serves food. Thats it. This is a personal dream of mine. It's kinda strange. I've never been one to care what people think of me but in the past few years I've started to hate that I don't have a degree in something. My wife has her MSW and I do alot of dinners and parties with her for her job.Thats why I went back to school. Not to learn to cook ... I can already do that. I just want someone to say "He knows how to cook" and not feel so embarrassed when asked where did I go to school.

Awesome! I need more references for my internship! I'll be headed off to the Charlotte campus. Unfortunately Providence is just too expensive for me. But I absolutely love that city.

I just started working as a travel nurse so I'm going to go see some of the country first, however I'm also considering a ms nursing. My dilemma at the moment is deciding if my advanced degrees would have me working in an ER/ICU/family care setting. Should I continue after that I'm going the ND route just because I'm far better in the clinical setting than the classroom. Its the equivalent of an MD for nurses, over the PhD vs MD for a doctor.

I'm licensed as a Family Nurse Practitioner, so I'm licensed to treat infant to adult. There are more specific tracks but then you are limited to a particular population (i.e. Women's Health, Peds, adult, etc.). Plus you can teach. I like it because I have plenty of practice and career options available - always good in this world.
and for the record, I didn't even finish my BSN until I was 40 years old and had 2 kids in school. Before that I was a real estate paralegal. So it's never too late.
