On topic, I've been tearing through books ever since I got a Kindle. I actually just read Sarah Silverman's autobiography, and it was a really funny/interesting read.
I've heard that both hers and Tina Fey's autobiographies are actually really funny.

I just finished my undergrad last year (History as well as Radio, TV, Film) so I'm going to be taking a few years to just get some experience in my field before going on to grad school. Right now I am working as a research analyst in the cable television industry, focusing on audience studies. I plan to go back for a cultural media studies MA at University of Wisconsin, and eventually a doctorate. Basically, I'll be studying the same things I am working on now, but in a academic environment instead of commercial. That is, unless I get a little too used to actually having a bank account balance that isn't red.
I have an MS in Chemical Engineering and was working towards my PhD but saw no point. Teaching at a university level requires way more begging for funding than I wanted to do. My research thesis (and dissertation) was in the area of nutritional requirements and amino acid conversion rates in recirculated aquaculture systems (specifically pacific shrimp in freshwater systems.) I made some significant advances in predictive feed rates.
I worked in Environmental Engineering for a decade, got my PE license and then "retired." at 40.
Now live a cheap life volunteering and pursuing as low tech and self sufficient an existence as possible (with very limited success.)
As for reading, just finished "Bad Monkeys" by Matt Ruff. It's a great, fun read with lots of twists and turns. Kind of reminds me of "Fight Club."
Sorry for the delay in joining the thread.. I've just recently started checking out threads outside of the basic Roo and music threads.
I both work in academia and am (hopefully) pursuing it as well. I work in the Admissions office of a small (but very good) liberal arts college and I applied for Masters in Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs programs for the fall, but alas, did not get in. :/ I will try again next year. I am not sure if I am shooting too high, but many colleagues did say that due to the economy, the numbers have skyrocketed for most graduate schools. The only school that I applied to that gave me any kind of information told me that they accepted "16 out of over 300 applicants." Which means they accepted 5% or less. I had no chance!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I'm working on my MBA! I should graduate in the summer of 2014. My accounting class ended two weeks early today actuallly so now I only have three classes.

I have my MA in Clinical Psych & will be applying back this fall for my doctorate with the goal of getting to the post doc in Neuro. CT scans. CT scans for everyone! My other goal matches this thread better as I would love to teach.

DSM 5 is coming out soon! I bet you can't wait.
I'm skeptically waiting. I can't wait to see if the "coffee addiction" diagnosis actually stays in. Either way it will make for a good read.
I will finish with my BSN in December and start a Master's in Nursing program in January. I also plan to begin an online doctoral program the following year so I will end up being a Doctor of Nursing.
even if it wasn't my to advance my career, I think I would still continue to take college classes here and there. I love to learn.
And congrats to everyone for continuing their education. I know it is hard to find the time and stay motivated. I took four classes this semester all on campus and it dern near killed me. I still have three papers and three presentations left though it will be down to one presentation and three papers by thursday.
Good luck on Finals and last minute projects and presentations for those of you in school.
Alternatively, do you also think it increases people's cynicism level of you in general I wonder?
No doubt, considering lawyers are generally looked on with favorability levels alongside cockroaches and congress.
Not me man. I had a public defender get me acquitted on a DWI charge years ago. I was inebriated. So I love that guy. Espinosa was his name. Go lawyers!
So I was wondering: is anyone on here working in academia, hoping/anticipating to work in academia, or just in grad school?
This might be good for networking, job postings, conferences (including lodging for conferences), or whatever else I might be neglecting to include.
As for myself, I'm in a MA program with the hope and desire of doing and finishing a PhD and going on to teach college from there.
Edit: Initially I made this thread to discuss working in or working towards a job in academia, but I figured I'd broaden the topic- and thus: "Inforoo and Higher Education".
Tell us about your (post)-post-secondary education!
Right now I'm a GA for the PE/Health and Wellness department at Arkansas Tech University..I've lived in Arkansas my whole life and would love to get a job at a college somewhere as far away from Arkansas as possible just for the life experience!
I'm in law school. Go to law school if you want to hate yourself forever.
I'm in an MBA program. Go into an MBA program if you want to hate yourself for a while, but not quite so long as you would were you in law school.
I think we are all a little masochist to continue our education to the masters level or beyond. My bachelor was in anthropology which consistantly ranks as the highest unemployment rate among bachelor degrees. Hence the pursuit of my MBA.

I'll be finished up with my MBA in July and I already have a job offer that I would've never gotten with my B.S. It's worth whatever headaches it causes.

You're right about that. Absolutely wotth it. I tell everyone I can to think about it after college.
I got a BA in a major nobody should ever take, because it will take you absolutely nowhere. I work in a warehouse with 400 people, and there are more people who are unable to speak English than people with college degrees.
I've thought about doing work in the legal field, but not as a lawyer. Like one of those behind the scenes guys that doesn't lead to major cynicism and dealing with assholes.

Not trying to give you sh*t, but I really don't think this job exists.
