I wasn't saying Black Joe Lewis was world music or reggae and certainly wasn't trying to be racist. I'm basically saying that they have more obscure types of music to kick off the day on the stages. If you read my whole thing you can see that Black Joe Lewis would be in the same vein as Trombone Shorty.
"Obscure" bands I'm thinking of that opened the What/Which stages:
2010 - Mighty Clouds of Joy, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Rebelution, Tinariwen, Baaba Maal (second to play on Saturday) 2009 - The Itals, Wailing Souls, Ilo & the Coral Reefer Allstars (not billed as Jimmy Buffett) 2007 - Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians, Brazilian Girls also but they were second to play on Friday
Just to clarify, my definition of an obscure band is something other than the traditional rock band

I saw Thee Oh Sees tonight and it was one the most amazing, hypnotic, feel the rock to your bones shows I've ever seen. I also saw Bradford Cox from Deerhunter there and asked him about their roo set time. He said, "I think when all of the small bands play. Maybe Thursday." What time? Day or Night? "They don't tell us untill its closer to the show." FYI
This was your original post. It sounds more definitive the way you describe it now than you did back then.
While searching for that post, I noticed in an earlier post that you really hoped they would play Thursday. Is it possible that you misconstrued what he said because you really wanted to believe they were playing that night?
I'm not trying to sound like a dick, it just seems like we might be reading too much into this. Has there ever been an act billed that high who has played Thursday night?
Hoping they schedule him during Eminem... that'd be perfect for me.
me too. i don't care who the cafe artist is playing during eminem, i'll be there. i'm sure it'll be one of the bigger cafe bands.
i actually tried to find out who were the bigger cafe bands. i just looked at how many facebook friends they had and how many listeners they had on last fm. i know looking at it that way doesn't prove they are bigger than some of the others but i don't think it hurts.
if i remember correctly, some of the more popular bands in this aspect were band of heathens, the beautiful girls, civil twilight, cory chisel, gary clark jr, givers, greensky, j roddy, kopecky, rev peyton and rotary downs.

Did J. Cole ever have a show on the Monday after Bonnaro? Right now, I'm seeing a show on Friday and one on the following Tuesday. Seems pretty clear that Sunday would be the easiest day for him to play. Rhianna has a show on Saturday, but he isn't opening, presumably to travel to Manchester from Montreal and back to Detroit.

He doesn't have the second Montreal show (Saturday 6/11) listed on his official site, but he does have both Toronto and Vancouver shows listed. I think he's taking the day off from opening for Rhianna to play Bonnaroo on Sunday.
