I love to cook and I try to eat healthy (for the most part at least, but I've got a pizza in the fridge that says otherwise), both of which can be challenging at Bonnaroo. It's always tempting for me to pack my cooler with a bunch of delicious goodies with the intention of putting together a nice meal or healthy snack, but that never goes as planned and I end up with a bunch of water logged lunch meat and lettuce. Then, I came up with the idea that it would be best to bring stuff that doesn't need to be on ice but who wants to eat warm peanut butter oil and smushed humid bread? I did, however, have success one year with some leftover grilled mahi and mango salsa. I made it the day before I left and didn't want the leftovers to spoil so I tossed it in a tupperware and threw it in the cooler. It really was the perfect snack/meal! I would be glad to share the recipe with anyone who would like it, and was wondering if there were any recipes that you all think might be the perfect Bonnaroo food?
Make a bunch of these pasties in advance. They're made of ground beef (90/10 is actually very good for you), carrots, potatoes, rutabaga and onion. Wrap them in foil (maybe bag them too.) Throw them in your cooler (in a dry spot). Put them on the grill (foiled so they're not all smoky) heat them up for a bit. Add ketchup, enjoy the best food on the farm.
If anyone is interested I'll post the recipe. I make about 2 dozen every month, my wife and I devour them.

Yeah I would also like a more detailed recipe for the pasties. I grew up eating them in the UK and really miss them! I think I may skip the meat, or use ground turkey.

Those sound really good! I don't know if I'd take them to Bonnaroo, they seem like they'd make a good winter meal though, could you send me the recipe also? In the heat, I want something really refreshing that can be served hot or cold b/c I usually don't bring a grill. This year, I think I'm gonna go with the mahi and mango salsa again, and maybe some mixed grilled veggies and chicken. But I am still trying to think up a few others, so keep the suggestions coming!

You can eat these cold. They really don't need to be warmed up.
I'd considered getting a bunch of footlong subs on the way in and only eating those for the weekend last year. But ended up going with the pasty idea. It was good except that they tasted smoked due to the no tin foil. I'm not even sure I'm going to do the pasties this year.

We took bread, peanut butter, and jelly to eat at camp and we didn't eat ANYTHING at camp. We ate mostly at centeroo or at the $1 grilled cheese spot. From last year I noticed I don't do well eating in the heat. This year I am going to bring more peanuts/trail mix - I had that in a zip lock bag and it went fast. Some of our neighbors had like full on grills and shit. Some people go all out. Another band of brothers had a full table playing beer pong. Depending on how much you wanna haul with you - you can have a nice spread. Good luck
Last year I only bought food once. It was after DMB and we were walking back to our tent and were passing our hospitality tent and all we could smell was really good food. So we bought some fried rice and chicken stuff. It was delicous.
I always cook at camp. To me it makes more sense. I already spend a lot of money on going to TN from Buffalo, why would I want to spend money on greasy food that I can get at any carnival. That's not appealing to me.
I always make my own chex mix. A really big bag of it. I also make a fruit salad and a pasta salad. And we have the usual hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner and we make eggs in the morning.
I can't stress enough that if you are bringing your own food you should unwrap all of your food and re-package it in air-tight plastic containers.
Also I always bring a blanket or a sheet to cover my grill and spare gas tanks and make sure they are in the shade before I go have fun for the day. Maybe I'm being paranoid but I have issues with leaving flamable objects in direct hot sunlight for hours at a time. But that's just me.

I'm usually the only female in a large group of guys who depend on me to come up with some sort of menu and purchase food for the group... given the bonnaheat, eating during the day seems to always be out
breakfast (made as soon as possible to avoid the heat)is basically the same every morning and our only true meal planned for the day scrambled eggs with cheese (i use egg beaters, cause eggs break) potatoes bacon/sausage (last year we took deer sausage) toast
dinner we usually aim for sunset or after when we can find a break or whenever anyone feels like cooking pork chops potatoes corn on the cob hamburgers/hot dogs grilled cheese chicken
all of the above gets doused with BBQ, ketchup or whatever feels right at the time and i usually just aim for things that are easy to throw on the grill. i do like the idea of the premade pastie, i press hamburgers and other stuff to go anyway so i cant see it being much more work. good idea!
