My point exactly with Sojourner and Eminem, WE ARE MISSING SOMETHING. We have too many guesses that do not fit all the pieces and are too far a stretch, OR we are reading something wrong or reading too far into something. The only guess that actually fits and makes sense is U2. There may be 1 other.

i looked up cancelled space shuttle missions and found this, one of the columbia space shuttle launches that were cancelled
STS-9 (Columbia)-Originally scheduled for launch on 1 August 1980. The crew of 3 were to place the satellites GOES-4 and SSUS-D into orbit during the 3-day mission.
I'm still looking into it more to see if it fits in with the rest of the clues
I can't help but thinking there has to be reason for the choice of the word 'speckled' - not just to generically mean something with spots or freckles.
Ben Keith was a peddle steel legend who played with Great Speckled Bird (they were one of the bands on the train in 'Festival Express'). He was also a 40year collaborator with Neil Young - was the pedal steel on Harvest and many other albums, and over the years was part of pretty much every Neil Young backing band other than Crazy Horse. He died at home on Neil Young's ranch on July 10 last year.
This might all mean nothing.
But could an appearance by Neil Young last year at SP/ACE have been thwarted by this speckled lad's demise?
as far as watershed...truly things will never be the same in the music world with his passing. He was also a highly sought after Nashville session artist and had contributed to hundreds of recordings by all the biggest names in country music over the past 40+ years. Also a top notch producer (Jewel's 'Pieces of You' for one).
This is the some of the best logic on this thread. Good job on linking "space" with SP/ACE, the work on "speckled" and "demise."
The only thing I would think differently about is "A watershed moment otherwise." The "watershed" meaning could lead to the idea of "We tried to get Neil Young last year, but it didn't happen. But we're getting him at Roo '11 and that's just as big."
And I'm saying this not becuase I want him there. I like Neil, have seen him a few times, but definitely not a "seal the deal" artist for me this year. I just think this logic works best of all the other.
....much better than Sublime with Rome, for sure. Whoever was trying to make that link with the clue needs to start smoking cleaner c-rack.

hahaha yeah since your theories to REM and The Beastie Boys were so airtight
Post by luckyusername on Jan 13, 2011 10:24:38 GMT -5
REM isn't a bad theory, neither is U2. The Beastie Boys are pretty unlikely this year with Adam Y's recovery (wish him the best) and they are big enough that a repeat already wouldn't make sense.
Not long, after he released "The Envoy" (an album that was not received well by critics), Warren Zevon's (recently divorced) record company end their relationship and he became emersed in NO NO WORD!!! and alcohol addiction resulting in checking himself into rehab. He retreated from the industry for awhile, but began working with Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills on a minor project called Hindu Love Gods. Berry, Buck and Mills served as the core of Zevon's next studio band when he re-emerged in 1987 with the album "Sentimental Hygiene," hailed as his best since "Excitable Boy."
At this same time (1987), R.E.M. released "Document" which signaled their breakthrough from cult success into mainstream.
Speckled Lad's demise = Zevon's troubles Watershed moment = release of "Document" and "Sentimental Hygiene" At first I didn't really know how to work in "trip to space," except that Zevon's album before "Envoy" was "Excitable Boy" and was hailed criticially as one of the best albums of the 70s and was successfull. Zevon's 1982 release "The Envoy" returned to the high standard of "Excitable Boy" but was not a commercial success.
So maybe the "trip to space" is in reference to Zevon's percolating success, that is thwarted by his own demise, which leads to his collaboration with R.E.M. which leads to watershed moments for both...???
Also, I'm aware that R.E.M. is HUGE for an answer to a 1st clue.
Or, perhaps someone else Zevon worked with, because even the slightest research reveals that he worked with a shitload of people, many of whom are still alive and have been speculated or have performed at Roo (Dylan, Bruce, Neil, etc.).
Clue #1: A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise. Alfred E. Neuman – speckled lad from Mad Magazine Lyrically, Alfred E. Neuman is invoked by the Beastie Boys on their song "Shadrach," from Paul's Boutique. A trip to space – “Intergalactic”, off Hello Nasty Adam Yauch’s (MCA) long bout with and beating cancer, release of a new album – definitely watershed moments.
I think the 2 most probable (explainable) guesses are:
1. Paul McCartney Thought process: 3 days prior to launch, the Apollo 13's command module pilot, Ken Mattingly, was grounded because he had come in contact with german measles. Apollo 13 was America's first disaster in space. The day before Apollo 13 launched, Paul McCartney announced his his departure from the Beatles. Paul's first solo album was released April 17, 1970; the same day as the Apollo 13's return to earth.
Trip to space thwarted = Ken Mattingly's place on the flight to the moon Speckled Lad = Ken Mattingly (though he did not get the measles, he was grounded because he came in contact) Demise = ??? A watershed moment otherwise = The O2 tank rupturing (thinks to some dumbass at nasa dropping it 2 years prior whilst asembling the space craft), thus causing Apollo 13 to be the first manned american space flight to encounter a major malfunction
Maybe I just like that I thought this one out from start to finish.
2. Explosions in the Sky Thought Process: The Challenger shuttle exploding 73 seconds after lift off from Kennedy Space Center, or an Explosion in the sky
A trip to space thwarted = obvious A freckled lad's demise = Kennedy's death Watershed = people crying
A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise
The STS-9 shuttle launch was delayed for a month due to a nozzle problem that necessitated moving the vehicle back to the Vehicle Assembly Building where the nozzle was replaced.
Not sure how a nozzle problem has any connection to "speckled lad" but we could say that the nozzle's demise cause this space trip to be thwarted.
Then after they finally got to space it was considered highly successful having proved the feasibility of the concept of carrying out complex experiments in space using non-NASA persons.

In 1960 Gary Powers climbed into his aircraft, and blasted into the atmosphere on a trip destined to be cut short. CIA's U-2 program. U-2 pilots flew espionage missions using an aircraft that could reach altitudes above 70,000 feet, making it invulnerable to Soviet anti-aircraft weapons of the time. A Soviet surface to air missle brought his craft down in what would be a watershed moment of US-Soviet relations in the Cold War.
in review of lad the term can refer to a soldier. Gary Powers was a decorated soldier.
A watershed moment; Soviet intelligence, especially the KGB, had been aware of U-2 missions since 1956, but lacked the ability to launch counter-measures until 1960. Powers’ U-2, which departed from a military airbase in Peshawar, Pakistan [2] and may have received support from the US Air Station at Badaber (Peshawar Airbase), was shot down by an S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Surface to Air) missile[3] on May 1, 1960, over Sverdlovsk. Powers was unable to activate the plane's self-destruct mechanism before he parachuted to the ground and was captured.
The incident set back talks between Khrushchev and Eisenhower.

I think STS9 works pretty well except for the "speckled lad" part. Not sure how that connects to the exhaust nozzle problem or whatever. It's also a band that would likely play Roo too.
We'll see....did we figure out how to confirm answers?
Idk if anyone mentioned this but what about this theory for Explosions in the sky: A trip to space- Fireworks are "headed to space" thwarted by a speckled lads demise- fireworks self destruct or EXPLODE in the sky (maybe speckled lad is pointing out what that effect of a firework is....speckles everywhere that are now falling instead of rising) a watershed moment otherwise- perhaps because fireworks are usually set off as a ode to a watershed moment or some other important event
^^ I posited this outcome several pages ago ^^ (That no help would be given w/ these clues)
Solving mysteries is fun, but these clues are so open-ended as to defy a single, concrete answer. Without aid i.e. hints, the clues are about as useful as a rubber at Comic Con.
