Big speculation for my first post but I think its Furthur. The trip to space that was thwarted by a speckled lads demise was the Grateful Dead coming to and end with Jerry's death....maybe? Most people agree that the Dead were a watershed moment in music.
Thoughts?
Welcome! ;D That could work...but Jerry wasn't really speckled in any way, was he?
maybe we should think about multiple meanings here
trip -- a druggier kind of trip? space -- a space as in an area or open area? demise -- v.transitive verb 1 : to convey (as an estate) by will or lease 2 obsolete : convey, give 3 : to transmit by succession or inheritance intransitive verb 1 : die, decease 2 : to pass by descent or bequest <the property has demised to the king's heirs
n. the conveyance of an estate 2 : transfer of the sovereignty to a successor 3 a : death b : a cessation of existence or activity c : a loss of position or status
watershed: maybe think of tears or losing water weight (ha!) or b : a region or area bounded peripherally by a divide and draining ultimately to a particular watercourse or body of water

As rachierach pointed out, demise doesnt neccesarily have to mean death? loss of position and status is a good one-- virgin stores closing, Branson lost a percentage of ownership recently, I realize how I may be stretching but my gut feels good about this one.
Did Kennedy actually have freckles? I have no idea...being Irish it wouldn't be impossible, I just never noticed them in any pictures.
Similarly, I'm not seeing any freckles on this Branson dude either.
There's no alliteration or rhyming or ANYTHING in the clue that would limit or influence word choice. I don't know why Katie/whoever would have said "speckled" if she didn't mean it, y'know?
Demise and otherwise rhyme. That's why I feel otherwise could possibly be ignored.
My first post to the boards is going to be my guess. So here it goes... Danger Mouse (in some form, probably Broken Bells)!
Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were going to release Dark Night of the Soul, but the CD almost never got released because of legal issues. Mark Linkous of Sparklehose committed suicide in March of 2010. I'm trying to find the watershed moment in this though, maybe he hooked up with someone who knows U2's people through the recording of Dark Night of the Soul because he's now producing their new album.
It got stuck at the bottom of the last page and I wanted some input.

You still aren't explaining how Virgin's demise thwarted Muse's trip to space.

...because Muse were relying on him to get to space?
How about space = a band's rise...as in a speckled band member's demise prevented this band from taking off at first, but are a better band now with the replacement as it was a watershed moment.
Well I can not find anything confirming Kennedy had freckles but he did have a dog named freckles. I also found this:
In September 1963, during a speech before the United Nations, Kennedy again proposed a joint lunar program to the Soviet Union. The proposal was not enthusiastically received by Khrushchev. Kennedy's death only a little more than a month later essentially made the proposal irrelevant
Yeah, I started reading this about an hour ago and realized I had about another three hours of reading ahead, so I'm skipping to the end to ask what happened to the Laika theory? Seemed pretty solid for Arcade Fire.

I don't remember seeing this in the 26 pages previous. Forgive me if I missed it in catching up, but "watershed" is also a television term for when networks can start showing more adult programming. So the "watershed" moment could be not an important one but one that was sexual, violent, or profane in nature, making it only appropriate for "after the watershed."

Virgin did kind of have a fall from grace, I can see where you're coming from on this one.

Well, one of the definitions of speckled is listed as motley. Motley can mean multi colored...I'd imagine jerry had a bit of tie dye in the wardrobe

Speckled makes me think of liver spots not freckles.. The demise/watershed moment otherwise part makes me think of Nixon and watergate and Apollo missions were canceled due to budget cuts by Nixon ... Not sure how this helps lol
Sorry, didn't read all 26 pages, but could this a performance of Spiritualized's "Ladies And Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space"? I know they just performed it "for the last time" a couple months back, but I'm sure AC has the money to get one more out of them!
Space mission that revealed the probability of water on Mars. Thus "watershed". The speckled lad was JFK whose death "thwarted" the advance of the space race. Thwarted as in put off or delayed.
Ultimately, if JFK had lived, our presence in space would have been much accelerated. Not just to the moon, but also to Mars. There are rumors of JFK communicating a desire for cooperation between the USSR and the USA for this common goal.
Also, lad or lass are a way of addressing young Irish folk.
I stand by Phoenix-the 2008 Mars mission that discovered history of traces of water on the polar surface of Mars.
