What was the first headlining act you saw on the what stage at Bonnaroo, anything memorable stick with you? It seems like there's alot of people on this community that entered the Bonnaroo world and sub culture at different times and different years.
Our first Bonnaroo ever is no doubt a memorable and one of a kind experience never to be forgotten. You can have many Bonnaroos, but only one FIRST one. It will always be a little more special.
So the question I pose to you is-- what was the first headliner show you saw on the what stage, and do you have a cool story about what was happening around you when you were there? Share with me how your life was changed.

Actually, I have one.
My first Bonnaroo was 2007. My friends and I were fresh out of high school. I was still 17. ha. Anywho, I ate corn for the first time instead of watching Kings of Leon. From our tent, which a sober friend of mine had almost burnt down moments before by knocking over a grill, me and my friends stumbled towards the What stage for a glorious Tool show.
We came up as the Roots were just getting started and I told my friends I was going to go get a drink. I came back and they were nowhere to be found. After 10 minutes of looking, I said screw this and tried to get as close as I could for Tool.
I saw an awesome Roots show including a 10-minute version of Masters of War, then participated in a beach ball war before Tool started and then had my face blown away by Tool on what was my first full day at Bonnaroo.
No headliner has ever topped it since, though Jay-Z came close...
During Phish in 2009, I sat with the characters from the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario, Luigi, Wario, Peach, etc. It was awesome. My favorite headliner has been Jay-Z, though.
The Police. I was not impressed by them, but I was highly impressed by the crowd. I was pretty far back, but could see a bit of the stage and the screens. But the AMOUNT OF PEOPLE was astounding. And the costumes, the folks in glo-stick outfits and crazy hats and tons of Burger Kings... you didn't need anything to feel as though you were hallucinating. It was a surreal experience.
And then after trying to get to any other stage... same crowd going through a small path to see the Flips... that was surreal but not in as lovely of a way.
I sat in camp and watched Tom Petty in 06, you could see the arch and stage pretty well from my car that year. The first one I watched inside Centeroo was radiohead.
Yeah, it was pretty cool. Good greatest hits setlist and a bunch of happy people, plus Stevie Nicks came out. Show wasn't excellent or anything, but a shitload of fun.
The show the next night, however, would blow it and any following Roo headliners sets out of the water.

Dave Matthews Band 2005. A guy walks up to me and my friend with a box which had been cut in half and had 24 draft beers in it. "Hey guys, I lost my friends and have been looking for them forever. These beers are getting warm. Drink them with me?" He says. So we drink a bunch of free beer and took a nap during the DMB borefest. Woke up just in time to see Warren Haynes and Robert Randolph tear it up and then headed over to the Mars Volta and had my face melted.
Kings of Leon last year. Blew me away...made me a fan of them and was the best show I had ever seen in my life.
Little did I know that title would be short-lived, as Jay-Z completely destroyed my expectations the following night and that performance will be one of the best memories of my life for several reasons ;D
Tool but I think I'm one of the few people who didn't enjoy the performance. I'm not into their music and the gross images on the screens turned me off to them completely. I ended up leaving early to get a good spot for Superjam. I took a nap right outside the tent before Superjam started and when I woke, it was too crowded to see anything and I couldn't hear anything because of the sound bleed from a nearby tent. I ended up seeing Ben Harper play with JPJ the next day anyways so it wasn't like I missed too much. The first headliner I enjoyed was The Police but I was disappointed that their set was so short and they didn't play the one song I wanted to hear.

Bishop, the more you post, the more I feel like we have in common. Same first Roo (and thus first headliner), feel the same way about Radiohead, love the Celebration Ale...hell I think we even joined Inforoo the same month. Your comments in 2009 made me realize I had to check NIN and I did and it was awesome. Cheers!
Pearl Jam. The reason (+ Metallica, Jack Johnson, and Kanye [Didn't know about the nightmare that would turn out to be]) I came to Bonnaroo in the first place. They have been my favorite band for quite some time, and NEVER disappoint live. The Bonnaroo show that I saw of them was absolutely outstanding.
'08 was my rookie year, and my rookie number were pathetic. I saw less than ten total shows that year. I missed out on so much, and as I was leaving I realized that, but promised myself I would be back year after year for a while.
Since then, I've gotten Bonnawiser, and am much better at planning for roo, and managing my time well while I'm there. In 09 I saw 20-25, and last year i started to bloom and did 41. So, if i reach around that number again this year, I'll be happy.
Isn't this basically just "what year did you first go to Bonnaroo?"
not neccesarily its possible for people to skip headliners. im just curious as to people's first experience with the massiveness of a headlining act on the what stage.
mine was KOL last year, and for me when that instrumental piece started playing right before they took the stage and played crawl was insane... its like... that thundering music said to me "welcome to bonnaroo" then the lights just came on full force and i was overwhelmed with concert feeling. even though it was just KOL.... definitely a moment ill never forget.

I was not one of the people upset about KOL on the lineup, but I must say, i thought they were incredibly boring. They were much better in 09 at Lollapalooza.
They did not at all match the feeling that was around the What Stage in 08 (PJ, Metallica, and Jack all had amazing shows) 09 (Phish and Springsteen destroyed it) and last year with Stevie.

dmb 05. started following them in 97, seen about 30 shows, don't much care for them anymore, didn't stick around for them this past year, they died with me when roi did. favorite moment of that 05 set was covering "time of the season." only appropriate for roo.
but i don't go for the headliners or big names. i did in 05 cause it was my first festie but since it's all about the undercard for me.

Tool was my first. I was 19 and had just finished my first year at App State. I'm from TN and had wanted to go the year before, but my family had already planned a trip to San Fran during that time frame. After missing Radiohead in 06, I swore I'd go in 07. For Tool, my goodies weren't good and I was totally sober, but it was still absolutely incredible. Lateralus with Morello was one of the best performances I've ever seen.
The Police the next night was equally incredible. I was a little more successful in my search that day, and my friends and I sat on a blanket near the back giggling and watching the Police for most of the show.
One of the most memorable, and most Bonnaroo-esque, experiences was the man sitting to our right at the Police. He was older, about 70, with thinning but long white hair and a long white beard. He was wearing a caving helmet with a light and had an easel, canvas, and tons of painting supplies. To this day I curse myself for not ever even getting a glimpse as to what his picture looked like, although my imagination may actually make it better. The entire time, though, my friends and I had a conversation about how terrible society is that he would be stared at in the normal world for just standing and painting, and how wonderful Bonnaroo is because they just "let him paint." It was probably the moment that I decided I would never miss another Bonnaroo ever again.

Metallica 2008, I won the lotto with Bonnaroo 2008, Metallica & Pearl Jam were my 2 favorite bands growing up and to see them back to back on the big what stage was amazing. It was the 1st Metallica show I had been to since Lollapalooza 1996 when they played, I thought it was great because they played maybe a song or 2 past the black album and the rest was old school Metallica. I had a rough Friday day (never take shrooms during the day @ Bonnaroo..it almost ruined my whole Friday, too fuckin hot) I caught a nap in the van with ac on, took a power shower, and 3 or 4 red bull and vodkas later I was flying for Metallica, Chris Rocks announcement was even awesome and than creeping death..and the night just got better and better...than of course MMJ in the rain
