it's disappointing, though, that they probably won't make a sequel. i read that the actresses found the director abusive at times because of his demands during filming, especially sex scenes.
Bumping an old thread to inform you all that Bill Hader and Fred Armisen's "Documentary Now" series, which premiered a little while ago on IFC, has hit Netflix. Fans of Armisen's brand of comedy will enjoy it. All the episodes aren't gold, but three in particular are worth your time:
Episode 3 - Dronez, which is a Vice satire, and
Episodes 6 and 7 - Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee Parts 1 and 2
The BJC episodes are outstanding and should be a part of our pop culture lexicon. I think any fan of music and music documentaries will love it. For a comedy it's also strangely heartbreaking.

I loved the whole series, but I'm also a huge Fred Armisen fan.

I love Armisen too, and have ever since his first weird characters on SNL. Love Portlandia etc. But some of the episodes of Documentary Now just didn't do it for me. Hell that first episode kind of made me fearful and nauseous.
Having said that some of them I watched in an airport while I was waiting on a plane. I bet I'd appreciate them more on a rewatch. But I ain't watching that first episode again. Scary.

i watched the first two episodes last week and actually loved the grey gardens one. it was funny, bizarre and creepy. not really what i expected when i randomly turned it on.
Anyone into Flaked? I'm pretty big on anything Will Arnett, and plenty of cameos. Not the greatest show ever, but very watchable. Kinda reminds me of Bo Jack Horseman.

oh yeah we burned through that one. I thought it was great. Didn't think about it before but there are definitely similarities to Bojack Horseman.
Amongst other things, what I loved about it was it's portrayal of a recovery community. When it comes to addiction the stories Hollywood prefers to tell are the ones that are immediately heartwrenching, namely the actual drug/alcohol use, the "bottom", then the next thing you know they are in treatment and everything is fine.
What is rarer to find are the more nuanced issues of long term sobriety. Trying to be an good member of society, trying to be less selfish and more mindful of others, trying to be there for your friends, reaching out to newcomers in the program etc. Will Arnett's character is a classic example of the guy everyone looks up to because he has a great war story and tells it well. He's charismatic and has a lot of clean time. It seems like there was a time he really helped a lot of people, but he's slipped into a situation where he cares more about his own reputation in his meetings than he does about actually doing the work necessary to stay sober and sane.
Of course there are all sorts of spoilers that could modify my above opinions, so I'm gunna tag those as such since this isn't a thread dedicated to Flaked.
Or is he even really an alcoholic? All we know about his drinking days is the car wreck story which we know was bullshit now. It could really go either way, but we don't know much about how he actually drank. Plus the fact that he's able to drink a little wine and not go completely off the deep end indicates he might not have the alcohol craving that is indicative of alcoholism. It seems possible he's hiding his drinking simply because he is so proud of his status in his recovery community that he doesn't want to jeopardize that.
But there is some true honest good recovery shit in there. When Bunny comes to Dennis's house and gives him that lecture about everything Will Arnett's character did for Dennis in early recovery. Goddamn that made me tear up thinking of all the shit people did for me when I was a little spun out amphetamine junkie in early recovery. Good shit.
Anyway beyond all that I thought the show was funny, well acted all around, and had some surprising twists and turns. Definitely recommended for Will Arnett fans (and aren't we all?) and anyone who wants to have a few laughs and enjoy a good story.

Man I hadn't been on Netflix in a while, and they've added some great stuff. First thing I'm gonna start with at some point this weekend is Happy Valley Season 2. The first season was incredible and I watched all 6 episodes in one sitting. Talk about an emotional gut punch.
I'm kind of a sucker for British television because a) it's usually really freaking good, and b) I lived in England from the ages of 7-10, so the accents, mannerisms, scenery, quirky humor (or humour, as they would spell it), etc. of good British TV brings back a lot of great childhood memories.
anyone watch this? i'm working my way through it. i don't like his music anymore than i did before but his story is interesting and his work ethic is insane.
i did find the Tomorrow Land segment humorous. Like a lot of great music documentaries they have this segment where they are hyping the importance of X show, in this case closing Tomorrow Land on the main stage. They have several people talking about how big of a show it is, how they knew Aoki was going to crush it, etc., complete with the obligatory slow motion shots of Aoki walking backstage toward the stage and the crowd is going bananas waiting for him**. Then he gets to the stage and the music builds up and I get all excited... then he plays some weak ass soulless pop track, and he's got his hands in the air and he's smiling and the crowd is loving it. And I'm sitting quietly on the couch petting my dog and feeling nothing.
anyway i think i clearly just don't see the merit of Aoki's music. Usually a doc like the one above will at least help me understand the appeal if not appreciate it.
** - as an aside, a wonderful example of this type of scene is from the 2015 showtime documentary "Daft Punk Unchained", which is fantastic if you haven't seen it. Of course it deals with the build up to Daft Punk's 2006 Coachella performance, and it is an excellent piece of documentary-hype film making. By the time they are actually showing footage from the performance very muscle in my body is tensed and I'm watery-eyed and shouting "woooooo!!!" in other words the polar opposite of the Aoki scene mentioned above.
this one recently popped up on Netflix. I did not know the BBC made a mini series out of the book. I read the book several years ago and loved it, but I remembered very little of it when I started watching this last week. No spoilers, but this is a period piece, I'd say Victorian-era, definitely right on the cusp of industrialization, and magic has returned to England after being gone for 300 years. Mr. Norrell, England's pre-eminent magician, proves it has returned and aims to make magic "respectable" again. Johnathan Strange is another talented magician who becomes Norrell's pupil. Then a fairy gets involved, and fairies are devious and cunning creatures who are not to be trusted. What ensues is a story with a lot of adventure, with strong themes of love, friendship, and strangely the importance of academic dialogue.
It is a very unique story, and masterfully acted and directed. Seven one hour episodes. My wife did not read the book but thoroughly enjoyed it. And I got to have one of those "damn it that actor is English" moments when I saw Eddie Marsan plays Norrell. In Ray Donovan, Marsan plays Ray's brother Terry, and at least to these Southern ears his Boston accent is so flawless I thought for sure he was at least American.
Just started watching Jessica Jones, 3 episodes in , and really like it!! Hoping it will have a 2nd season!
You're in luck, kinda. Jessica Jones will definitely get a second season but it might not be for a while. Some articles have suggested 2018, this one speculates Netflix will start releasing their Marvel shows quicker. DON'T click the article though because it contains a big spoiler if you haven't finished Jessica Jones.
I'd just like to reiterate this one. It's a documentary about people who are in love with objects. Like the lady who was reunited with her long lost love, Bruce, the carnival ride.

Officially on my must watch wish now. I don't know how I missed it when you first posted.

Yeah, I've seen parts of this movie. I bet it's pretty good.
I didn't even know there was a cap of 500 in the queue for an individual profile until recently. I'm way too busy these days, and they just keep piling up. It's led to a bit of a standoff in my household. I've got one, the kid has one, and I suggested to milady long ago that she make her own but she wouldn't. I'm the stubborn bastard who refuses to delete anything on the profile with my name on it out of principle.
I'm not wrong here. And someday, I'm going to have enough spare time to watch something like Deathgasm I added on name alone.

I didn't know there was a limit as well. I actually use my sisters account, and I started my own profile because EVERYONE was on her account and the suggestions were starting to get fucking weird. Now, (she pays more so we all can watch at the same time) her and her husband have a combined profile, I have one, my son has one and each of her kids have one. It is so much nicer to have suggestions that actually apply to my taste. But I still have weird shit that I have added due to the name alone that one day I will watch, eventually.
