Sweet Jesus, you guys really grew this thread while I was actually away at the festival. I got dropped off not too long ago by crazykittensmile at the pizza place/bar my brother works at here in San Diego. We were in the audience for the taping of tonight's episode of Conan ;D
I'm double fisting while I wait for him to finish work, but I doubt I'll have time to catch up... but I am just checking in to let y'all know that I had a blast and I'll be back with updates myself.
Staying with my brother tonight through my flight tomorrow; arriving home in the early hours of Wednesday's holiday, so that could be a while...

I can't stress enough how amazing Nosaj Thing's set was. Surely other festivals will be booking this guy soon, he definitely deserves all of the exposure he's soon to get.

Radiohead, prince, muse, chili peppers, etc...and they are lucky if they get 1 mill, but they normally only get 500 k
then you have third tier : snoop, dre, J z...they get 100 k
then you have 4th tier : black keys, munford byoncee, Prince etcc: they get 50k
I dont really know if this is the place for this question, but does anyone have any idea where to get some recordings (FLAC preferred, but I'll take mp3) of some of the Coachella sets? I can't find anything aside from Lauren Hill. I'd like almost any that I could find, but most of all, I'd love Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons.

I've got about ten or so sets that I recorded. I haven't checked the quality yet. Some are 44.1 16 bit WAV files and some are 320kpbs mp3s. When I've split them cleaned them up and checked the quality I'll post a download link in this thread.

I hate when people start saying they may choose Coachella over Bonnaroo in the future. I'm actually kidding and just trying to be funny.
But think about being surrounded by the Hollywood elitists at a festival where most of the bands play for 40 minutes and the music ends well before the sun comes up. When does the music stop there? Midnight? Earlier?
That is why Bonnaroo and its fans will always win. I completely understand wanting to experience other festivals, or wanting a change but at the same time, I understand being passionate about music and going to see the bands you love wherever you can. I'd much rather be surrounded by the good spirits at Bonnaroo with much, much more music and so much more to do and experience. Plus I live near Cincinnati, so Bonnaroo's much easier to get to.
I will also add this. I went to ACL in 2006 and the whole trip (ticket, hotel, flight, other expenses) cost me 3x as much as I've spent at Bonnaroo in a given year.

Eh, there are just as many dickholes at Bonnaroo. At least at Coachella there are a lot of attractive girls. And I think you've got the wrong impression - I'm pretty sure that when you're raging in the Sahara tent, there isn't a guy in a tux standing next to you, sipping a 88 Bordeaux Blanc and muttering about how crude the whole event is.

Usually the last bands go on stage around what, 11:30? I think the music stops at 1:00. Also, it's been discussed, but I think that 50 minutes or so is fine for most bands at a festival - I love Bonnaroo, but not every band needs an hour-plus. Many bands, especially the younger/up-and-comers that tend to populate Coachella, don't have the type of catalog to stand up to a long set, and it's painful to watch them try.
That is why Bonnaroo and its fans will always win. Yeah, but I've heard that ACL is ridiculously expensive - it's held in a major city, after all. But this thread is about Coachella.

as someone who forewent Roo for Coach in 09....I dont really think they are comparable besides them both being music festivals. theres a different feel at both festivals but it makes neither one better then the other. Ive been to 6 Roos and have already decided I will be back at Coach next year.

As I said many times, those festivals are two totally different animals. Coachella is very clean, the sound is amazing, the light shows kill, and the party doesn't really start until night time (and once it does, it'll be one of the best you've ever been to). It's not as centered around the music in my opinion as it is just seeing face melting shows. Plus the weather is perfect and you're walking on a polo field so you're feet stay clean. Celebrities, I mean yeah they are around, but they are also just normal people looking to have a good time so everyone just leaves them alone (if you do actually see anyone at all, usually they are just in the super VIP areas but every once in awhile you'll see them around and remember you're bound to see celebrities anytime you're in the LA area)
As for Bonnaroo, it's far more centered around the music in my opinion. Yeah the heat sucks and at night time there is trash everywhere but there is something special about running over to a tent at 2 AM and catching an act. Coachella shuts down a little after midnight, stupid right, but it is basically in the center of a residential area. There's a certain energy Roo has that chella lacks. Plus all of the collaborations and comedy. They are just two completely different things in my opinion and every passionate music fan should definitely check out both.

I'm sure I missed someone I saw there... I have a marked-up schedule with this very info somewhere, but I'm slacking on unpacking.
This was my second Coachella (the first being 2004) and I was impressed by how the festival has evolved in that interim. A couple things I noticed in particular:
Of course, there is the late night issue. I do believe the official cutoff/curfew is 1am; Chemical Brothers broke that by 20 minutes or so.
There's a lot more sound bleed due to the greater proximity of their stages.
Attendees had a more equal gender breakdown there than at Bonnaroo; the age of attendees was more homogeneous though. Speaking of which... both festivals seem white as hell to me.
With the desert heat and shorter sets making for more set-hopping, I think Coachella as it's set up can be as taxing as a comparable day at Bonnaroo.
I don't think I heard one person yell "Coachellaaaaa" all weekend, unlike all the "Bonnarooooo" you'd be hearing on the farm.
I saw Ashley Capps was tweeting from Coachella so I know he was there. I hope he learned a thing or two about setting up a bank of port-o-potties, setting up video screens at every performance venue, and putting on Animal Collective after dark... to name a few things.
I think my biggest complaint about the logistics of Coachella was the beer situation. I get the choice of Heineken or Heineken Light for $9 a pop, and I can't take it out of the beer garden to see a show? That, my friends, is bullhonkey.
this was my first coachella after going to bonnaroo the past three years. i realize that i may still be in the afterglow of the wknd, but i must say i think i am a convert.
although i agree with what people are saying that they are a "different animal"...it was very weird, b/c it felt like i was at bonnaroo and then not at bonnaroo at all.
here were the benefits of coachella for me: -better, more organized camping. didn't matter which way you were parked, you had access to a road and could get out. even if you were in bfe, your walk would have been 25 mins max. -free showers (duh) -cleaner. way cleaner. better grass and honestly, the not being able to drink thing at the shows doesn't bother in me in the least. i am not a huge drinker so i could really care less about that and i really believe it cut down not only on trash, but i also did not encounter a totally out of their mind drunk person (the WORST kind of wasted person in my opinion) the whole wknd. -better weather. yes. it was hot. but bonnaroo was simply miserable last year. i am from south tx and i could not stand it. -WAY better art. so many cool, active sculptures. it was awesome. -screens at all the stages. -better lights. -more music that is my taste. (no jam bands for me please.) -i found myself personally fitting more in with this crowd. i've always been more hipster than hippy and the crowd was that. -there were several "attractions" which were cool like a roller rink, cell phone walls in several places throughout the fest, a few information booths around the place, art that actually moved through the crowds. -easier to navigate in general. -i don't know why people are complaining about the celebs. i was DYING to see one the whole wknd and didn't. these past few days i've been seeing all these pics and turns out they were all around me and i didn't even notice (and i was looking, trust me).
things bonnaroo does better: -longer set times. 50 mins is way to short for anyone in a past 5pm slot i think. -later shows. i don't mind if music doesn't go till 6am, but def at least 2am or 3am would be nice. -more diverse music. this is a plus for sure. -vendors. there were no vendors of any sort @ coachella except the official ones. -better food. had some ok stuff @ coachella, nothing as good as some bonnaroo food i've had. i did have a freshers! it was sooo delicious.
my favorite sets were (in no particular order): the joy formidable. the national. arcade fire. yelle. sleigh bells. cut copy. kanye. robyn. the kills. DFA 1979.

Coachella's sound, lighting, Creator's Projects, art, electronica, Do-Lab (Lucent Dossier please), shaded food court area, cleanliness, grass, views, palm trees, roller rink, old merch for super cheap, food (I am a breakfast burrito addict), rarer acts, 10 for 1 to keep the grounds cleaner, closer tents as long as there's no sound bleed, less of a walk from BFE to venue, free showers, no mud, more international people, lockers
Bonnaroo's comedy, late night sets, longer sets, super jam, silent disco, anything beer related, cinema (although I have never used it), 5 dollar golf cart rides, larger camp spots, graffiti, hippie vibe, abundance of glow sticks, being able to use a camel back, RV camping (Coachella's ended theirs this year)

Did they have the stage in the campsite again this year? Latenight shows were in there last year and they had a sound-dome-epcot-center thingy with djs latenight the year before that (I couldn't make it this year) so there has been music latenight, just not in the main concert area. We camped by the campsite stage last year and had a blast latenight.
PS - I think comparing Coachella to Roo is legit (unlike comparing Roo to something in a city like Lolla), it's just a totally different vibe....
