I'm not saying they're it, but Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers deserve a mention in this thread. Also Bruce and the E Street Band. Who is everyone's pick for best American band ever?
Oh fuck, the White Stripes too would be WAY high on that list I did. Can't believe I forgot them. That list was contemporary artists i.e. the last decade, not since The Beatles.
But yeah, that was my point. Modern choices. Not sure if even I would have them in the top 6 since 1970.
Nah I really do like Kanye more than The Stripes, at the moment anyway. I constantly change my mind about this kind of stuff.
Sorry about the the lack of reading comprehension. But I still don't think that AF or AnCo belong in the best 6 of anything list. AnCo's very good at times, but VERY inconsistent. At their worst their unlistenable, but at their best they would deserve inclusion on the best of list. As far as AF, they're pretty obviously garb, and I'm going to continue to let you guys know until you give up and admit they're going to be buried in music history.

I mean it's not even like hey it's not really my thing. It's more like hey this is cringeworthy. But hey if the business drink your blood, then I guess who am I to say they don't.

My second favorite band of all time behind The Beatles is Grateful Dead but I dont think they fit the description "since" The Beatles so im gonna say its the talking heads
fuck it im throwing My Morning Jacket into this conversation.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
I have to go with Phish musically they are unparalleled in their ability to blend pop, rock, and psychedelic music. However not everyone likes them (also true of the Beatles), to me though they are the clear winner. They also once played The White Album for Halloween.
OK, first let me say this. The beatles are the greatest band of all time. They made timeless, universally loved music. They found enormous amounts of critical acclaim, widespread appreciation, and commercial success.
Some bands have had similar success, but never on the scale that the beatles experienced it. I doubt there will ever be a band that find the success the beatles enjoyed.
Now, if you asked 1000 people "Have you ever heard of phish" atleast 200 of them would say no, and I would wager another 150 of them would say "Yeah, and they suck". Those are consecrative numbers too.
And if there cover of the white album is nearly as god awful as the cover of Killing in the Name that someone posted on here recently, then the entire band needs to seriously consider ritualistic suicide.
There is plenty of music I am a big fan of, and I wouldn't begin to compare any of them to the beatles, or debate whether or not they are the best band since.
The best band since the beatles, I dunno, thats a tuff one, Led Zep, U2, and The Stones are at the top of the list for me, based on time tested music, critical acclaim, widespread appreciation, and commercial success.

The White quackin' Stripes? AnCo? AF? Kanye? What kind of flaccid criteria are you boys employing in this cockamamie thread?
Once again, the list that included those artists was regarding contemporary greatness, not a list of best bands since The Beatles.
Isn't it a little weird that we have to wait a decade or two to give the White Stripes or Arcade Fire, for instance, the credit they deserve as a truly great all-time artist? I could easily see The White Stripes being viewed twenty years from now the same way R.E.M. is viewed now. I understand why, but it's just interesting to think about...

Just remember it works both ways, Arcade Fire might be viewed like Joe Jackson, who everyone thought was going places but got pretty much thrown on the ash heap of music history. That pretty much goes for any band that has not established a legacy yet. Maybe in 20 years The White Stripes will be viewed like we look at RHCP today, as a band that had great albums then sold out for mainstream approval. I am not saying it will happen but it might. Most of these contemporary bands have just not been around long enough to judge what their total musical impact is going to be.
Ha...I knew something odd was afoot. I just thought you'd decided to be nicer and more logical in arguments, but I should've known it was all AWATD's gf.
