The biggest disappointment for the weekend was the flaming lips. They need a new show/concept for their shows They did the same thing (minus DSOTM) in 2008 at the same exact stage. Wayne also was too worried about what he thought the crowd should be doing and he did not give a good performance. Everyone knows he cant sing, and now he uses a mega phone to sing to hide it. Also, it was only Friday night, after people waited in line for 9 hours, so people were probably real tired on top of the super hot and humidity topped off with the lack of Drvgs!!!.
I was really excited to see dark side, but i didnt even stay for the whole thing.

Seriously? They played fucking Dark Side of the Moon!
The whole show was a power struggle between Wayne and the audience and most of the audience just caved. I personally was in a state where I felt so in control of myself that I refused to let him make me do anything, but I loved watching him play puppet master of the audience. The Yeah Yeah Yeah song was amazing because he poses the question "with all your power, what would you do?" then goes on to demonstrate exactly what he would do with his power and i found it simply beautiful. Go onto "I can be a frog" and he shows exactly how much of a puppeteer he is by getting the whole audience to make whatever sounds he asks of them. The WAND also fit into this game of power over the audience. Over and over he told us the power is in our hands, and yet the audience still let themselves be ordered around by a single guy on stage. There were several times where i wish they never shut of the music (more especially the lights) but i understood what he was doing and why. Then to play "Do you realize?" before you go into DSOTM was nothing short of amazing.
Dark Side itself was a masterpiece of live music. it took such balls to cover that album in front of so many people, and they managed to stay true to Pink Floyd while still making it very much in the style of the flaming lips. I loved every minute of the show and wouldnt want anything to be different about it. i dont get how you could say they need a new show as they dont cover DSOTM every show...
I thought it was good, but it was my first time seeing them. I loved it.
Sure, it's the same show over and over again, but so are a lot of shows. You can't really get mad whenever you see a band multiple times and they play the same show. There are only a few bands that really change it up. The antics might get old, but I'd rather see the balloons and confetti than nothing at all. A change of setlist from time to time would be ideal, but in the end I think antics > no antics.
To me, it felt like they rushed a few things in to make up for the shorter set due to DSOTM. He only stayed in the ball while they jammed for like... 1 minute or so, which to me came off more as "Hey, look what's back...okay, now to the next song."
Third time seeing them, still enjoyed the hell out of it.
i dont understand why people complain about this. flaming lips is one of the few bands that really do more than just play their songs live and bob their heads like most bands do and yet nobody says those bands need to change their show. It's what they do and they do it well, why should they change. and they have been adding new things as they go, lazer hands is pretty recent as well as the vagina intro. It's just becuase there is so many staples to their show that if you see them more than once your gunna see those same things over and over again but I don't see why that means they should change their show becuase bands do the same shit every night. thats how a tour works. I understand the argument is that its been similar for about 7 years now but either the flaming lips could just stop doing their stage setup and just play their music and bob their heads like everyone else or you can see the extremely entertaining show they put on as well as playing great.
I will say that if you weren't close this show probably wasn't even worth watching. We were going to catch the first half hour but walked away because it was barely even audible from past the trees to the bobbleheads. Fuckin Which Stage. I can imagine if you had a good spot that show was pretty amazing though.
I missed this show, but I was really close for the show they played a week before, which was essentially the first set of the Roo show, plus a few more songs. I think the Lips are a better live band right now than they've ever been, and the Embryonic material live adds a lot to the show.

I'm really pumped to see them in July without the DSOTM set actually. I've been dying to see embryonic stuff live and it looks like they're playing a lot of it.
Too bad about Soft Bulletin material though, that's gonna sting.

Here is my take on the Flaming Lips performance at bonnaroo 2010...
Awesome Visual Performance: The show was a sight to see for sure. Being my first time I knew it was a must see for me. I know he uses the same gimmicks every show, but the sheer fact that it is a bonnaroo late night set and dsotm made it unique in its own way. Also no two bonnaroo performances are ever the same. Even MMJ play practically the same show every night on tour.
Cost: Wayne obviously spends a lot of Time and Money into his shows much more than most acts. This could prevent him from being able to put more money into large equipment like lighting rigs and such. They seem to be touring more this year than most recent years, so maybe he is trying to make some cash for some new for a tour down the road.
Interesting: In my opinion the Flaming Lips were the most interesting band playing during their time slot. I have seen Bassnecter twice recently, the Black Keys are only all right in my opinion and for some reason just cant get into Chromeo so the FLips were the right choice for me.
DSOTM: I enjoyed this representation of the album very much. I thought the live performance sounded much better than their recorded version. My only problem with this was after it was over it seemed like they were going to play an encore, but couldn't for some reason. I was kind of let down that they didn't some back and play one or two songs of their own material before sending us on our marry ways to galactic.

I loved it. Wasn't doing heavy druqs either.
Question: Did Wayne really tell the crowd that inaction is not going to work anymore in the face of government tyranny and that we are all going to have to fight the government? Because that's what I gleaned from his diatribe.
Seriously? They played quacking Dark Side of the Moon!

also, no lack of druqs here

I was relativly sober and loved it. Have seen the Lips 4 times before, including the other 2 Roo sets. I have never understood the complaints about Wayne's voice. No one should expect him to be a strong singer. Have you heard the albums? That's why he asks us to sing with him. If you're too cool for that than go see another band.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

thats why i hardly addressed what they did with Dark Side. i thought the first set was unbelievably impressive

it was definetely the best show for me at roo and my third time seeing them and definetely the best set of theres out of the three. DSOTM went way beyond expectations and I think it is possible that if you were not close that it's not as good (ide say thats true for most shows) but I see what your saying. I think the musicianship and sound was amazing too. I really don't think there show rides on antics it just adds to the entertainment factor and waynes voice i would say is similar to most legendary singers such as dylan. not necessarily "good" but interesting and is full of character which i would take over "good" any day. watch American Idol if you want that.
What about that article makes you think they're doing DSOTM all tour? The interviewer might think they are, but Wayne never confirms that.
Near the beginning they say "Their version of Dark Side Of The Moon was first performed near his hometown of Oklahoma City, and the official tour recently kicked off in Houston and carried on to Bonnaroo. "
No Floyd songs were played in Houston. I know they played some DSOTM songs on their spring tour, but Stardeath and White Dwarfs opened most of those dates, and I don't think they're opening on the rest of the summer tour.

I like FLips music just as much as the antics and am excited to see them again at forecastle even if they do the same crap (although I do hope they mix up set lists a least a little)
They did the same thing (minus DSOTM) in 2008 at the same exact stage.
Just for myself, I'm very happy to hear that the show was the same as in 2007 because I missed that one due to the ridiculous crowds going from the Police. Saw Gov't Mule instead but always wondered what I missed.
Though I do agree with you - I loved the show, but wouldn't go out of my way to see it again. What made it special was that it was a new experience. It's disappointing when creativity isn't continued.
It was my first time. I was so mesmerized by the screen and the balloons that I would zone out for minutes at a time, then turn and look at the other zombies around me with their mouths hanging open. I guess it's a different experience for everybody.

Instead of covering an album that no one can really improve on the Lips should do a set of old material. They have a dozen albums of their own material for crying out loud. I like the confetti and balloons. They should keep that.

That is my one (minor) complaint about the Lips show for the last few years is that they don't utilize their incredible (and massive) back catalogue like, say, Ween does. But they have worked a couple classics, like Mountainside and Lightning Strikes The Postman, back into their shows lately. I suppose a good deal of their early material is too edgy and (quite frankly) ameturish to translate well into their highly polished new look and sound, but some of them would.

selfishly, i'm glad they did what they did because i've never seen them live nor been to bonnaroo before 2010. i really got a lot out of it. as far as telling us that we have the power and then proceeding to lead us along, there's really not a whole lot for someone in that position to do after that message. what are they supposed to do? say "you have the power" and then turn the lights and music off and wait for us to do something grand? it was a very empowering show for me and i took a lot of much needed and positive message from it. i think there were a few times at least where i was at that audience participation didn't quite work out so hot and i think the lips did the best they could with it at the time. personally i have a hope that wayne secretly wanted us all to bring out our own balloons and our own drums and somehow as an audience transform into a meta puppeteer en masse to make the lips do complete improv with us, but then again i'm crazy. speculation aside, i really enjoyed myself at that show tremendously.
i'm glad that people did get to experience a great show. Its just the exact same thing on the exact same stage on the exact same night happened 2 years ago. But if you didnt see that show two years ago, i do get why this was awesome for you.
I have to agree with Juggs, the embryonic stuff was craaazaaay! Way better than on the record even.
I thought for sure they would pull out some new unexplored plateau of freakyness to add to their freakout. That's how I mentally tore myself away from Daryl Hall and Chromeo. I was sure there was something going on that I couldn't miss. Especially after they leaked first. It was a good show though but not on top of my list like I had expected.

but no, its not. stage theatrics were the same, the show was different.
The Flaming Lips 2007 Soundcheck: War Pigs RFTP Tapsmir Fight Test Mountainside Yoshimi Yoshimi 2 Vein of Stars Yeah Yeah Yeah Song Pompeii AM Gotterdammerung Taps Waiting for a Superman She Don't Use Jelly Do You Realize? --------------------------------- The W.A.N.D. What is the Light? The Observer --------------------------------- Moonlight Mile Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (outro)
is not exactly the same as
The Flaming Lips 2010 The Fear Worm Mountain Silver Trembling Hands She Don't Use Jelly The Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Song I Can Be A Frog Yoshimi Battls the Pink Robots Pt. 1 See the Leaves Laser Hands Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung The WAND Do You Realize?
Speak to Me/Breathe On The Run Time/Breathe The Great Gig in the Sky Money Us and Them Any Colour You Like Brain Damage Eclipse
they were two different shows with very similar stage theatrics, nothing more.
