mojo, I'm not sure that it's wise to refer to The Flaming Lips as "little boys" on a message board that's chock full of Flaming Lips fans. Galactic may be stronger at their instruments but, in my opinion, they don't have a single song as catchy as some of the Lips' best tunes...and I like Galactic, quite a bit.
You've not been here very long. Otherwise, you'd realise it doesn't matter and many actually agree with him.
Flips in 07 was absolutely stupid. Turn Your Audience Away 101, tought by Wayne Coyne.
I was not much of a fan of the show this year either. I watched for a minute then went and got a good spot for LCD Soundsystem.
Only seen the lips once and that was roo '10. Wayne kept whining cause we weren't crazy enough for the first night (which actually was not the first night). Their whole set was too quiet, too. Especially the entire darkside set. If you want your audience to have more fun, don't biznatch at them for not having enough fun. I'm glad I saw them play, but I'm also kinda glad it's over and I can not worry about them any more.

To me, all that stuff Wayne said about there not being enough druqs and people not being crazy enough was just playful banter. To each his own, though. I loved the set of their material, so did everyone around us it seemed (by the soundboard), but I can see why you would get turned off.
As for pretty lights, there just isn't enough to it for me. Just not my thing.
Starts off with War Pigs in soundcheck. We're all partying before the show starts. Best part of the show, really fun, no lie. Then the concert starts. UFO shiz, bubble, poor performances of pretty good songs. A few stinkers from Mystics. It was fine, not bothersome. People were lapping it up. Then he starts talking. Allot. War rant? Check and major fail... Wayne already pissing people off. But I'll look past it, I was having fun. Then he talks some more. And some more... and more. Interspersed with unimpressive music performances. Then we get to Yoshimi... he stops us 3 times in the sing a long because we weren't loud enough, starts babbling about the "sphere of life".

yes, i gurantee Empire of the Sun would have just as much crazy spectacle as a Flips show, but nobody on stage would go off onto crazy rants, and the music itself would be high quality and just as important as the visual aspects
It was awesome... best part of the show.... but then I saw Gov't Mule do it so much better just hours later and a hop skip and jump away.
Edit: To this day, my biggest regret of all years is missing most of Mule for Flips... I stayed for all of Coyne & Co. and went to the rest of Mule ( last couple songs, then the AWESOME Sabbath covers, then I think Soulshine to end it). Then what was left of Galactic (20 minutes or so?). Those were some great times. And FTR, I did have a good time at Flips concert and wasn't really overly bothered by it.... I was having a good time with great friends, but I still made a conscious note of the non appealing aspects of the show.
To me, all that stuff Wayne said about there not being enough NO NO WORD!!! and people not being crazy enough was just playful banter. To each his own, though. I loved the set of their material, so did everyone around us it seemed (by the soundboard), but I can see why you would get turned off.
to be fair, the volume and Wayne's crowd interactions are my only complaints. the material and musicianship was definitely spot on

Nah, man, you're wrong about that. I totally know someone who ate at a cafe David Byrne once ate at, and she said that the barista there told her he thought he overheard Byrne say something about dealing with dirty, stinky hippies. I'm telling you.
