Jay Electronica might have been good if he let a beat ride for more than 2 minutes. Every time something got rolling, he would kill it and start talking or doing a capella stuff.
Here's a really great Dilla beat for 45 seconds!
Frustrated me to no end.
Absolutely. I didn't walk away disappointed, because his flows were sick, but it was like come on man, let the music play.

From what I saw no one was terrible or even weak, maybe I just lucked out? I would say the heat/humidity were a factor in the enjoyment of some sets but no one made me want to leave.
I did not like Japandroids or Lucero. The sound in the Comedy tent was awful. Everything was muffled and echo-y and I couldn't hardly make out the jokes. I was p.o'd that Deadmou5 was 30 min. late but came back later to watch and listen and liked it. Jamey Johnson I did not likeat all. Tori Amos made me loose by buzz and sounded like something you listen to on a rainy afternoon to take a nap to. The Deadweather was too bluesy and depressing for me and I was expecting more of a up-beat indy-rock sound. Norah Jones was okay but the volume was too low and I heard mostly sound coming from the Troo Lounge. The Magnetic Zeros -don't know. I was up front but was pushed around so much by kids trying to move into the area that I had to leave before they even started.
Bummer. Did you enjoy anything you saw?
Sure. Sorry to sound like a Debbie Downer. I was just posting the acts that I thought were poor. Another person replied to my post ealier that it could be that I just didn't like this style of music rather than poor performances from the artists and that could be true. I suppose that when it's Bonnaroo, I'm so hyped-up that I expect the BPMs to be higher and the mood more uplifting. Anyway, I loved OkGO, Gossip, Jimmy Cliff, Mike Snow, Micheal Franti, Flips, Deadmouse, Dropkick Murphy's, Theivery Corp. etc...
DMB was my biggest disappointment. I had high expectations - they can put on the best show I've ever seen when they're on, but that set on Sunday was so uninspired and boring. They played a run of the mill setlist with a bunch of boring songs. Over half their set list was post-2006 which was a letdown.
This ... for sure. It was a snooze fest the entire time he was on stage. 3 out of 4 of us were sleeping through 3/4 of the show. My son was the only one who was able to stay awake through the whole thing, and I think that was only because he was anxiously waiting for them to play a song that he actually liked. Unfortunately, it never happened.
I must admit it was not the most pleasant way to end an, otherwise, awesome weekend of music. But then again, we can't win them all can we?
I have been a huge DMB fan in the past, seen them 40+ times and administer a fairly large DMB fan website. I interviewed Stefan Lessard on Saturday and since they're taking a year off he said that they are planning to be more experimental than before.
A couple of reasons to explain why DMB was a yawner for some: 1. People are exhausted on Sunday night. 2. The exciting stuff that was happening on stage was subtle, they have re-orchestrated important parts of the song in interesting ways. Too Much, normally a boring tune to me has some really interesting new stuff in it. How you would possbily have noticed if you aren't a huge fan and paying attention I have no idea. 3. Dave was intimidated by following Wonder and Jay Z. When it comes down to it, DMB is not as cool as either and I think that kept him from going very crazy.
Another comment on DMB. They screwed up musically a number of times, including the very opening of their set. That was ok for me, because I saw and could hear the trickery they were doing with standard tunes but for people who have no idea I could see it feeling sloppy.
I agree 100%. I happened to really dig on what I saw of this show, because I haven't heard the band sound that jazzy in awhile. (Been a few months since I saw them live, so I could just be behind the times.) For me it was wonderful seeing GrooGrux get the full treatment with sax solos and improv jams. What an underrated show.
I really didn't go to any shitty bands like Wale, I stuck with the ones I knew would rock like MMW and Galactic.
Blitzen Trapper was a disappointment for me, but Mayer Hawthorne and Trombone Shorty were the pleasant surprises of the festival this year.
If someone can explain to me how ZBB is not completely exploiting war I might change my opinion of them. Does he really elude in that song to the fact that people fighting wars are fighting for our ability to eat chicken and drink beer?
Seems pretty handy that they played a free concert for those oversees and then MADE AND IN DEPTH VIDEO ABOUT IT AND ADVERTISE IT. Next time ZBB just do a good deed and stfu about it.
Worst show of the weekend and I LOVED when they were jamming. The bad made me sick to my stomach though.

Wale was bad...and last time I saw him I enjoyed him. Wig Guy opening for Margaret Cho was wayyyyyyyyy bad! Other than that no real complaints which is a good thing!

I thought Isis was pretty terrible followed by Gaslight Anthem. Everything else I saw was great...maybe not Cross Canadian Ragweed, but only bc it was soo effin hot.

I heard Circa Survive from the comedy tent line, and maybe I'm just not a fan, but it sounded like they replaced their singer with a rabid tone-deaf cat that had tourette's and laryngitis.
I also found Regina Spektor painfully boring, but that could be because I only knew her older material and my brain matter was roasting in my skull while I sat in the sun.

Margaret Cho and her second opener were absolutely TERRIBLE. The show I was second most excited for was also my least favorite. I could not make it through DMB. Such a disappointing show.

Either someone gave him some screwed up no-no-words, or he is genuinely that unfunny. Also, Margret Cho, you are 40+ and I do not need to hear you talking about being at an orgy.
The worst musical performance for me in which I saw the entire set was Stevie Wonder. I was on the front row behind the pits so I had an awesome view but the show was boring. I didn't like the sing-a-long stuff at all. I didn't recognize half the songs so during the sing-a-long stuff, I was completely lost. I came to hear Stevie sing, not the crowd. He also came on late and left early. The drum thing was cool at first but it went on for way too long.
I really beg you to reconsider with Stevie Wonder. That show was incredible. I've seen him before in a non-festival setting, and he plays a pretty standard show of hits and new material. But this show was something special. I was really getting into the singalongs, and so were thousands of others. His calls were quite complex, filled with subtle rubato and a pretty wide vibrato and the crowd was responding perfectly. (at least from where I was sitting) it sounded too perfect. And remember he's blind. The only way he could know how many of us were out there was by having us tell him.
Also, according to a reporter who had a good view of his setlist (and band) from the stage, this set was almost entirely unscriped. 3 songs in he was calling for songs the band obviously was not expecting to play, possibly in response to his setlist being shown on the jumbo screens for a few seconds before he came out. Perhaps the spontainous nature of this show is why you felt confused, but I knew early on we were getting something unique with this show.
And it wasn't his fault he went on late. The Dead Weather (who played before Stevie) were the first band to play (a half hour) late. That pushed Stevie and (I think) Jay Z back a half hour.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
DMB, put me to sleep which means I probably missed "Crash"? The xx, I still don't get. Weezer and Phoenix didn't move me as much as I wanted it to... but for Weezer maybe I was just sour I left Jeff Beck
Jay Elec does that every show, its a stylistic choice to promote wordplay but I also think it is a direct offspring of not having a full album out. (I still loved it.) And my taste must suck because I really enjoyed mid to the end of Neon Indian and OK Go
and Julia Nunes ... so super frowns on the Nunes hatred, its tough playing on a blazing hot Friday before all the big acts man.. and she still brings her sweetness to the stage, why the hatez?
what's with all the kid cudi hate? sure the show was short, but it was one of the best 30 mins of my life, everyone around me was going crazy, as was i. my mind wasnt exactly right, so i might be biased, but i had a hell of a time.
You people do realize that the farther away from a tent you are, the worst the sound is gonna be? You can't be laying on the ground way outside the tent and expect a good sound. This even includes the stages. If you are one of the folk that like to lay down hundreds of feet beyond the people standing up, the sound is gonna suck. I have gone four years and never has the sound ever been good from that distance. You people are gonna have to put some effort to get near the tent or stage. With Bonnaroo you get out of it by how much effort you put in, simple as that. And for your information, I have seen on average 20 or so FULL sets a year. So its not like I have been trudging along to get in the tents or near the stages for only 6-7 full sets.
Now this doesn't include times where the sound guy sucks and it takes about 2-3 songs to get it right. Thats why I never leave a set during the beginning.

yeah^^
i was close for manchester orchestra but i was getting too hot so i moved back to where my friends had a blanket laid out. they sounded amazing from up close, from that far in the back though they just sounded like noise. if i had heard everything from back there i would have thought they were awful.

Those saying Isis sucked must not be familiar with their music or performance. They are not a "Hey, how ya doin'" type band. They get on stage, play their songs with perfection, and don't say anything...all of it usually done in the dark. Poor decision on Bonnaroo's part to book them in the middle of the day...darkness goes with the music and enhances the atmosphere of their show. Sorry for those that were disappointed, but I give it a 9/10.

I completely agree they put on a very good performance, they belong nowhere near the discussion of worst performance at Bonnaroo.
most people i met loved kid cudi but i thought he really did not bring his a game, or even his b game for that matter. i've been a fan of his for awhile now, before the album and when he only had a mixtape out, and that set pissed me off. i get that lip syncing is a common thing in rap now, but it has no place at bonnaroo. jay z proved what live rap shows can be, and cudi showed what they shouldn't be.
