The replacement headliner would get equal or lesser pay than KoL. Prince, McCartney, Water, Gilmour, Stones, PJ, Radiohead without a doubt cost more than KoL, I would imagine. We're basically looking at MMJ or Furthur or WSP. Young only because we know he's been in talks and they've promoted him, but he'd probably cost more than KoL.
Tenacious D (lackluster, imo), Flaming Lips or Stevie Wonder could shift their position (Jay-Z will be in England that night).
So, it's either (1) They play (2) TD/FL/SW reschedule their slot (3) MMJ, Furthur, NY, AF, WSP or JJ step in.
My vote is to they don't play and Furthur, My Morning Jacket or Neil step in. But I think they'll play and suck even more than they would if they were healthy.
EOTO takes place of KoL on the what stage. Make it happen.
^ I actually did LOL on this one. These guys just played for free at Toronto's Marijuana March on a small stage in front of maybe a hundred people. They could probably play in a tent but headlining NO WAY mate.
I would love Neil, MMJ, Further, Black Crowes, Allmans, and AF (although I already have tix for August). I would also love the obvious move of Lips headlining and Black Keys headlining Which right after.
just out of curiosity because some of you are so sure, why would it have to be someone of equal or lesser cost as KOL? this festival has been operating in the black since 03 i believe.
Ratsoup, I think the answer lies with what many others are saying which is that this late in the game a huge add will not boost ticket sales. Superfly would certainly have to replace a lost headliner and/or shift the schedule around to make things right with those already going, but they aren't going to go out of their way and spend a lot of money to fill the void. I still think an already lack lustre KOL will be there and will be even weaker thanks to a shot voice on their lead singer.
since I could care less about looking at "hot girls" I am free to base my choices on other criteria, such as how much I enjoy the music and/or how good of a live show it might be. If I see any "hot guys" its just a bonus...haha. So, this old fool will still enjoy her KOL nap.

If KOL don't play, they don't get paid - the part of the budget reserved for them will open up. However, all tickets have (for the most part) already been sold. They can either use the cash that they would have given to KOL to book another headliner or save it and rearrange the schedule. But they aren't going to spend over the alloted amount for KOL - they have no business incentive to because there would be no benefit - the same # of tickets are going to be sold regardless if KOL cancel and the Flaming Lips take that spot or they shell out a couple million more for Prince.

There is a business incentive in building clout for future festivals. That Prince played Coachella contributed to the reputation Coachella has for getting big acts, and is seen as a real accomplishment. A notable, well recognized replacement for KOL will be remembered into the future, and will support the credibility of Bonnaroo as a festival that can come through in a crunch. That's worth something.
well if KOL did cancel and they ended up trying to switch the lineup around, i imagine they'd have a pretty difficult time reflecting that in the printed schedule that they hand out when you get there

Not really, they'd just print an extra sheet with the revised schedule to hand out with the guide, and put up signs like they did for the Great Kanye Fiasco of '08

Yeah, posters of the schedule including revisions are posted at the information kiosks.
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.

That was great wasn't it? Oh, that's not what you meant? Never mind.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
It could be that this is all part of the Bonnaroo master plan. Maybe KOL was never meant to headline, and they'll be replaced at the last minute by Neil or Further. Putting KOL at the top of the bill was just a big joke on us from the beginning.
1. King's of Leon will definitely be there. There's no way they'd be willing to walk away from this... even if the guy's voice sounds like crap. 2. Even if somehow KoL DID cancel, don't expect anyone even close to the status of bands being discussed here to replace them. There's no reason for Superfly to spend the extra money a band would require for such short notice, and HUGE acts wouldn't be willing to put forth the effort to ready a show so quickly and possibly suck. Superfly isn't going to lose any ticket sales from KoL not beig there (they already know how dissatisfied a large number of vocal attendees are with Kings of Leon actually NOT cancelling, but purchased tickets nonetheless). And this year's line-up has zero bearing on next year's ticket sales, as Superfly knows that the Kanye debachle probably didn't affect 2009's sales, and no one on this board (or elsewhere) is not going to the 10 year anniversary festival if they bring in (for example, because you know they'll have at least one HUGE band) Radiohead just because Kings of Leon dropped out and wasn't replaced this year. If Kings of Leon drops out, they may rearrange the schedule, but there likely won't be any adds at all.
