I love Pink Floyd and I really like Flips but their version of DSOTM fucking sucks. Have you guys listened to the album? It's really, really bad. Why do so many of you want to see this, especially when Hall/Chromeo is playing?

Probably mostly for the spectacle of a show that will surely be entertaining (if not musically enjoyable to most). People tripping will have a great time watching it.
I like their version. When you take it for what it is, it is a pretty interesting take on a classic. Not a butchering, just a re-imagining. That being said, I'm going to Black Keys.

i dont think the cd is that bad, i like it (although money is wretchedly disappointing). but i think that the set will be alot of fun.
and im not a fan of hall/chromeo at all, so it came down to black keys vs. flaming lips. i choose flaming lips because i think it will be a more interesting and different show.
although i respect the musical opinions of others. do what you want and have fun
I will be at Hall and Chroemo, but I enjoy their interpretation of DSOTM. The end in particular is the best part, so I hope to catch the end after Daryl finishes up. Also, Henry Rollins is the worst part of the album, and presumably he won't be at Roo.

Black Keys for me too. I've listened to it about 7 times now and it hasn't grown on me one bit. I wouldn't call it a 'butcher' of the original, but I personally have no problem missing the Flips and this performance.

I think it's obvious that nothing is going to live up to the original, however...as said above, it's the festival atmosphere that will make it. It's going to be a big show, lots of people on cloud nine, and overall just a good time. I don't plan to catch it, but I'm sure those that do will love it.

Upon first listen, I thought they butchered it. Then I listened a couple more times realizing that it's the Lips own psychadelic version of it, not a cover of it. Then it became a little more appealing. Ever since they announced when they were playing, I have planned on not seeing them because of the conflicts. It'll be a spectacle for sure, but I'll be at Hall and Chromeo.

yeah i also agree with this thread. when i first heard this record, i thought it kinda sounded like a cat getting raped. i love floyd, favorite band of all time, so when i hear a band cover them, i'd at least be able to recognize that they are covering those songs. but i've also never seen the lips and i now realize i should've expected this kinda sounding thing with this album. but as far as a memorable or legendary performance goes, the obvious choice would be hall and chromeo.
thinking about music only though, out of the lips, hall and the keys, i have to say that i'd much rather prefer to listen to the keys.
personally, i think saturday latenight sucks and i really wish they would've divided it up a little better. maybe if they could flop deacon and hall/chromeo or maybe hall/chromeo and thievery. right now jay-z is #1 on my saturday latenight, and i'm not a fan at all, originally i would've been fine with only seeing about 15-30 minutes of his set, but now i'll probably be seeing either all of it or just hanging out at camp.

Those going to Black Keys and Chromeo should be stoked at this conflict.
Agreed. I was totally happy with this conflict. I was front center for Chromeo in 08 because we were waiting for Ghostland and had an amazing time. Daryl Hall with them is like bacon bits on a salad, it just makes it better! This show is poised to be the best show of the weekend for me, and if LOTS of people are raging to DSOTM even better.
After reading all the posts, I now feel the need to chime in. I saw the Flips play DSOTM on NYE and I would have to say that their interpretation of the album sounds better live than it does on CD. Some albums are simply like that. I would agree with a previous poster that said "Money" is not a very good song, but "Great Gig in the Sky," with Stephen doing the vocals through a megaphone, was incredible. I would agree with another one of the previous posters who said that their 2007 Bonnaroo show was sub-par. However, every other time I have seen them their performances have been substantially better. If you are a Flips fan, it would be difficult to pass up seeing them perform this classic.
Personally, I will be at Chromeo and Hall. This is a difficult decision, though, as Friday night is a clusterf*** of conflicts; I could just as happily catch the Black Keys or TCM DJ set.
I saw them perform DSOTM at NYE in OKC. I thought it was pretty damn cool and fun and think it will translate well to the 'Roo crowd. I also saw their free show in Denton,TX where they played almost all new stuff. The new songs translated live well, but didn't have that same orgasmic feel as say "Race for the Prize".
I will be seeing Hall/Chromeo instead of the Lips for the third time in half a year, but anyone who chooses the Flips will have a great time!

I saw Flips at Kansas City in late April. New stuff was great, and I love embroynic. They also played the last two songs on DSOTM, and I think it sounded pretty great. Differently a different feel, but excellent nonetheless. Definitely the vibe of the album.
That said, I still probably going to Black Keys/LCD. LCD's album and sound of silver is great. Plus THeivery Corporation at midnight playing for two hours. Late night Roo is great this year.

I have been vowing not to listen to it so I can hear it live the first time.... not sure if that's sure a good idea after hearing people say it's grown on them.... I think I'll be in the right state of mind, though, come 2:00 am 3 weeks from today....
Hate to miss Black Keys but I feel like they tour a lot more often around me and I've seen them 3 times vs 1 FL show that blew me away way before I really got into them.

i want to see a classic get butchered because it will be one of the most badass sets of the weekend. the flaming lips are an awesome live band. also i think that they have refined it a bit since they recorded. you have to consider that this was clearly intended to be performed live, the album is just a cool bonus. some elements of their version are better for the live setting, especially with their amazing stage show. which is better than the other bands playing in this slot IMO. look up their darkside shows on youtube you'll be pleasantly surprised like i was after feeling iffy about the album version. they do it differently and it seems fuller sounding and less repetitive than i remember it being on the album

Yeah, the new sound is very edgy. It just doesn't feel like good music for a live show.
Obviously the original DSOTM is better and no one thinks otherwise. I personally love the FLIPS interpretation of the album besides what they did to the song "money". I think it will be a great time because it will be a great experience to hear the album in a completely different and reinvented way. If the FLIPS just covered he album I would not really care. But instead they reinterpreted the album out of their love for the amazing album. Okay albums are not reinvented only amazing ones are and I cant wait to listen to their version live. If you dont like how they imagined the album in their scoop of creativity then see one of the other amazing acts at the same time but I think you should be open to what they did and enjoy the experience.

Oh yea I'd love to see more Embryonic stuff as well, last year I only got a couple songs from that.
Basically it comes down to them having a more versatile setlist, which they haven't done recently. They have so much good material to draw from and the fact that they ignore about 95% of it is disheartening.
If they wanted to make things really interesting they'd do Soft Bulletin in its entirety, along with pre Zaireeka stuff peppered throughout the set. I think anybody who has seen the lips recently wants to stuff other than yoshimi and at war with the mystics.

Completely agree here. I was at their show in 2007 and it was a massive disappointment personally, but there was plenty of room over at gov't mule which ended up being the best show of the festival. I've been let down by the Lips live too many times, so I'll be at Hall and Chromeo.
