I think clarkeroo is probably right. They may just be waiting it out. I think if they cancel, they'll move someone into late night, prob UM, then replace their slot. That would be easier than finding someone to play for 3-4 hours late night.

So what happens to the money set aside for the Flips? And that wouldn't address the huge downgrade to the lineup by simply cutting out the lips. There was a reason they were playing for 4 hours, it was supposed to be a 'special' 2 set show of an extremely unique and fun band. I don't think just moving up UM makes everything good. At least I wouldn't feel all warm fuzzy about a lateral shift of current lower-billed acts.
Do people actually think Umphreys McGee is an adamant late night replacement for Flips? Because it's really not.
Agreed. If FLIPs bail, they will have to get someone of equal of greater note to fill the slot. Just moving UMG isn't going to cut it - at least not in my opinion.
*EDIT* Arcade Fire doesn't seem to have beans to do until July... ;D

And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts
sorry, but if Lips cancel, don't expect anything big. They have a guarantee that they'll get paid no matter what. The only way they would get replaced with anything anywhere NEAR their own size is something already on the schedule or a "friend of the festival" that would do it on the cheap, i.e. WSP, MMJ, etc

They pay bands regardless of if they show up or not?

^i don't believe that for a second. but yeah, even though umphrey's is amazing live, they don't have the name value of the flaming lips. so while i personally would actually rather see umphrey's late night than the flips, most people would not be satisfied by this.

I have a hard time believing they get paid if they cancel, not saying it isnt true, just saying edit: ive said this before but I think Primus would be the perfect filler, Les is already on the farm, they rest of the guys cant be too hard to get, then just fill Mr. Claypool's slot!

They might have a guarantee of getting paid if something goes wrong on Bonnaroo's end, i.e. weather, equipment malfunction etc. but there's no way they get paid if THEY are the ones to cancel. If that were true, there would be entirely to many bands/artisits that would just say "quack it" because they didn't feel like getting out of bed that day.

still not sure why everyone thinks the lips are going to cancel, everyone needs to find something new to spend their time worrying/talking about... pretty sure they've confirmed they'll resume touring in June, which last time i checked was when bonnaroo happens. they took a month off so a band member suffering from exhaustion could rest up and get back to speed. it's been hinted ever since they canceled those florida shows and hang out. it's just a waste of time speculating and talking about... move it on, and lets hope we get the schedule soon. i'm guessing tomorrow or thursday, or May 19th. But I have no idea for sure.
it's actually called a Guarantee. that's the name of the payment. try to book a show and see for yourself.
edited to clarify for idiocy: it's not the full amount. They still get payed a Guarantee which is a portion of money they are guaranteed to get whether or not they play as long as they don't break the contract. And this kind of situation would not be breaking the contract. Thus, if they don't play bonnaroo will still pay them a set sum of money (for things like keeping the date free and hiring crew in advance and working on production, etc) better?

Hello, I'm a festival vet, but a roo-rookie. I'm heading to the farm b/c the festival in my backyard (ROTH) has been put on hold. However, regarding UM, they are an amazing late night show and would be great in a late night slot.
Obviously we all have our own taste in music and preferences, and that's what makes festies great... getting to share our opinions and discover new bands... but this seems oddly similar to a conversation we had on the Roth Boards about SCI last year. Many people questioned whether or not they could hold their own as a headliner and wanted a bigger act to take their spot... talk to many of those people today, they'll tell you SCI more than held their own, they turned out to be one of the festie favorites and probably the best headliner last year.
I firmly believe that if UM gets a late night slot, they will be a pleasant surprise to many of you who may question their ability to carry that slot. From my days back at Western Michigan and frequenting Bells Brewery, I've seen UM go from a small campus show to a (late night) headline worthy festival act. Honestly, they hold their own with the likes of other late night favorites Disco, Lotus, STS9, SCI and others. If you've never seen them rock a late night... for the sake of discovering another great late nighter... go check 'em out!
Looking forward to my first Roo experince! I'm assuming it's like every other festival I've been to over the years... great people and everybody is your friend! (just 3x the size)
A guarantee is common for large bands, for any venue. I spent some time doing booking for couple of old bands of mine. However in most cases if the artist fails to show up or in some way causes a large loss of money and/or patrons then they won't just get the money. The point of the guarantee is to make sure the band covers costs no matter how populated the show is so if there is no show, then the artist does not get the money.
i need the schedule pronto. I'm an inforoo addict and I'm having trouble coming in here every day to find inforoo in this state. I don't mind if a thread gets side-tracked for a page or two, but when I come looking for updates and every thread is hijacked into a debate about Drozd's sobriety or LCD's greatness I can't take it. We need the schedule to spark some good debate.

It's just that! Most people at Roo are just cool. Experienced Roo vets know Umphrey's can rock the late night - they did it in 06 and 04. I was there for 06 and it was amazing - glow stick war during Words (as my hazy memory remembers it, could've been a different song) was spellbinding.
while i do think the lips controversary is possibly slowing the schedule release, i also think it would be very easy for them to switch the schedule around if they cancel. they make an announcement saying "unfortunately, blah blah blah" and say "a revised schedule will be released soon" or "a replacement is being made" and thats all there is to it. if drozd is in rehab, he wont know til he is out, which could be a few more weeks, if they can even go on. i would hope roo doesn't wait two more weeks for lips to drop the sched.
also, until the schedule does drop, there isnt much else to debate that hasnt already been run into the ground. i dont want to look at mocks, i want to look at the real sched. i dont need band playing date confirmations for the same reason.
we need some real insider information on the superjam or schedule release to get things going again. i know lips are tight this year, but c'mon! its the information age and NO ONE can find out any clues as to what is going to happen?

Personal taste aside, Umphreys isn't anywhere close to same stature band as the Flips, who were probably a big draw for a lot of people buying tickets.
^ Yes for many people who glance at the lineup seeing " Flaming Lips do Dark Side of the Moon" is just great, if they cancel, which I doubt they will, an equal band should replace them. I need some more psychedelic music and vibes!

Actually they took a month off so Drozd could get his ass to rehab and clean up. My general opinion is any time an artist checks into rehab, all bets are off as to exactly when they'll get out/start touring again.

NoD, I like UM a lot, but I've got to agree with you. Shifting anyone up into a late night set wouldn't be adequate for those who were expecting to see 4 hours or so of the Lips. I suspect they would almost have to get a replacement if they couldn't make it...

First, Welcome.
I've seen UM a handful of times and think very highly of them. I think its been said a few times (NoD)..there is a huge difference between
