Sometimes when bands do cover songs you think, oh God, this is so so bad. Then there are other artists who really nail it. Not that I am the biggest Dave Matthews Band fan I like their music, talent and most of all the show that they put on. The cover songs that I have seen them do live and what I hear are outstanding. Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline, Talking Heads Burning Down the House comes to mind along with others like the most popular All Along the Watchtower.
What would you think of a Dave Matthews Band concert of all cover songs?
Personally, I think that they do a good job with their covers. "Time of the Season" was great. They do good versions of Floyd's "Money" and Young's "Hey Hey, My My," as well.
Please, let's just have a moratorium on "Watchtower" -- I've never been moved by it.
"Burning Down the House" and "Sledgehammer" are two of my favorite recent cover additions. I just wish they picked a better Peter Gabriel song than "Sledgehammer" to cover. Gabriel's "Up" album has some great songs ripe for covering.
Me: Did you say Retarded Steve was playing tonight? Boo: No, I have a speech impediment. I said that Retarded Steve is playing. www.411mania.com/siteimages/jcs logo_25254.jpg[/img] Check out Jam Central Station on Facebook on.fb.me/bT2xQx and @jamcentral411 on Twitter

really hoping they don't do watchtower. thinking the heads, gabriel or sly stone covers will be the most likely, because they've played the most over the past couple of years. i guess we'll see if they add any new covers this summer. would love to hear the cortez cover, and would prefer if warren was with them, but then again they do have timmy, so i'd like him to rip it up with them.
as for seeing a band play an entire set of covers, umph is the ideal band for that.

Have you seen it live with a guest? At Outside lands last summer I saw him play it with robert randolph... doing stairway to heaven bass intro instead of star strangled banner... and it was awesome! They even went back into it after the Watchtower breakdown and Dave sang the last part of the song.... then RR played the solo perfectly. I thought it was pretty rare but on antsmarching.org they said they just aren't allowed to put that part in any of their livetrax or live cd's for some reason. It was really cool though, specially not expecting it (sorry if that ruined it).
Also they played an awesome cover of Thank You by Sly and the Family Stone.... I could def see that coming into play at bonnaroo considering the context.
A beatles cover would be awesome... I've heard Dave solo In My Life which was pretty good and they have Blackbird on their Red Rocks CD.... but I don't think they'll do that now that they got rid of the keys.
I'd be real surprised to see Cortez the Killer but that's what I'm cheering for. It would have to be with a guest I believe though... someone else who can sing like they did on the New York album.

I saw that Outside Lands set and it was good. (DMB and RR played it at Roo 05.) It's just that their cover has been around forever and I would be happy if they took some time off from it.
I'm not a huge fan of their Sly cover, either. It's not a bad version, just incredibly repetitive. (Dave & Friends also played it at Roo 04.)

Saw them do 'Burning Down the House' last year at 10KLF and it was rad! I'm a Talking Heads FREAK so I was completely thrilled!!! ;D

I was at Alpine Valley the day Rick James died and DMB played a Super Freak tribute to him which was terrific.
I have been surprised by the covers Dave does, in Vegas he tried a Neil Young cover that he did not practice enough and he screwed it up pretty good, that was epic, Dave is pretty confident in his work and when he screws up it truely bothers him. He wouldn't let it go that he messed that song up the rest of the night, the live albulm could have been the Friday show if he had nailed that song.
His covers are good, I've seen Money, Sledgehammer, Burning down the House, Thank you fo lettin be be mice elf again, Down by the River, Sweet Caroline, Watchtower, and more in person, always a welcome addition to his live sets. Can't wait to see & hear the Bonnaroo set, I hope they go all Pearl Jam and play for Hours and Hours! F#*k Kanye!
Dave and Friends 04 was probably my favorite show of all time, soooo many good covers. I also love Time of the Season, Burning Down the House, and Watchtower.
However, I love his material too much to vote for a show of only covers. Give me some #41 sitting on the grass Sunday night and I will be the happiest girl alive.
I agree with nate- an all covers show should definitely go to Umphrey's. And while I'm on my soapbox- why can't they get a late night spat aaaaargh! ???

Kashmire with Tim Reynolds is on his newest acoustic CD from vegas, that would be cool.
How often is it that bands go past midnight or their allotted time on Sunday?
You can hate on Watchtower all you want but last year at Hershey, they did a version that interpolated Stairway To Heaven into the song that was the heat.

I've been to 3 Bonnaroo's and have not made it to Sunday night, due to heat, the awesome 13 hour drive home, the filth of my self, or just having had enough by Sunday afternoon, if DMB plays Sunday night, it will be my first Sunday Night and they can play all night in to the late moring, that would be "the Heat"
Only 15 days, can't hardly wait for the the Hot Tennessee sun on my Pale Irish Skin! Sunscreen, bring lots of sunscreen.
Neil Young's "Needle & Damage Done" has been covered this summer tour. Plus, they do great covers of his "Hey Hey My My", & "Rockin' in the Free World". Some other very good covers are Dylan's "watchtower", Floyd's "Money", Sly & Family Stone's "Thank You", & Lanois's "The Maker".
Dave & Friends did some great covers too, such as Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill", & Marley's "Three Little Birds"
Dave does a Solo cover of Tex Ritter's "Rye Whisky", which is always nice.
We may get to see John Prine guesting on "Angel from Montgomery", since the band has been covering it since 1991 and Prine is playing Roo!!
For those people who are not fans of DMB's watchtower, you should check out their version at Woodstock '99. It was crazy!!!

I'd be surprised if they go past 12, considering they start at 9. They do play for over two hours, but I can't imagine them hitting three or going far beyond it.
Based on the setlists from the Hartford shows this weekend, they only went just over two hours.
Speaking of Hartford shows, the cover songs from last weekend: Friday: Rye Whiskey Saturday: Neil Young's Needle and the Damage Done, Watchtower

While past performance is not a guarantee of future long sets, in '05 they played for about 2 hrs and 45 minutes.
