The Bonnaaroo website says when going west on I-40 past Knoxville to drop south to I-75 towards Chattanooga and go west on I-24 to eventually post Manchester from the South.
However, has anyone tried to approach Manchester from the North? Continue on I-40 well past Knoxville and take I-111 south. Mapquest has this shorter in time and less in miles.
Is there a reason why this isn't recommended during the week of the festival?
Because going 40 to 111 takes you through cookeville, sparta, and mcminnville. These are all small towns with small roads and redlights, not to mention the infamous roadblock in mcminnville a few years ago.
I can GUARANTEE this way is not faster that taking 40, 75, 24. it is shorter in miles but not in drive time.
The real question for Hwy 40 west is about the rockslide. It is epic and right at the NC TENN border. I am sure a lot of you are familiar with asheville!

I am going to disagree here Nashville is the big slowdown, but taking I-40 to 840 to 24 is really the shortest most direct route. That being said it is also the least trafficked so if you are planning on painting a Bonnaroo or bust sign on your car I would take 75.
Wolfman have you been to Asheville since the rock slide? Or anyone? I just want to hear what the detour is like. With NC state workers on the case April could turn into June.

i like going through 111, through sparta and alll that, I've been doing that route since 2006 (08 excluded). I've never seen a roadblock but could see that it could be easily done. I agree with jess that nashville traffic sux toad testes as does bonnaroo interstate standstills, that is why i opt for 111 south, its also more scenic.

I understand I was just saying if you take 840 to Murfreesboro, that might be faster than 75 from Knoxville, since you would skip Nashville, and Chattanooga that way.

Just looked it up, it is 30 miles farther, still lets you skip Chattanooga, and that little stretch of GA speedtrap.

I live in cookeville, and I believe that it is faster. BUTTTTTTT, the local law enforcement is out in full force for a week during roo. I work at a motel that is directly at the intersection of I-40 and 111 and police will sit in our parking lot 24/7.
Just don't write bonnaroo on the side of your car. Try to be a lil inconspicuous.

Here is the deal as of today. The Detour is I-26 to I-81 back to I-40 and takes about an extra hour but it the easiest way to get back to I-40. As time gets closer I can post a back road short cut detour of the detour it anyone wants it. It would take you through a few small redneck towns so care should be taken on this route.

i spoke with someone at NCDOT today and they are hoping to have at least one lane in each direction on I-40 open no later then mid may. I will keep y'all posted.
One lane? Wow, with all those tractor trailers going through that does not sound like a quick way to go. I guess we will be looking for alternate routes. I spoke to someone who said the detour on 26 isn't that bad so we'll see i guess. Sucks not knowing if the road is going to be open though.

ok the latest scoop is the DOT has been sandbagging in case something goes wrong...they are now saying I-40 should be open by the end of April...i will believe it when i see it...keep you posted
RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina officials said a stretch of Interstate 40 in western North Carolina that has been closed for six months because of a rockslide will reopen with some traffic limitations. Officials said both eastbound lanes will be open and one westbound lane would reopen at 6 p.m. Sunday. One westbound lane will remain closed for three miles while workers continue putting in rock bolts and anchor mesh to stabilize the mountainside. Truck traffic will be restricted to loads less than 12 feet wide in the westbound lane. The stretch near the Tennessee state line has been closed in both directions since the rockslide Oct. 25.
This is great. A graduate research project has kept me going weekly to Asheville since November. The week after I finish, they re-open the damn thing. Great, just great...
I just went to NC two weeks ago and I took the 70/25 route through Newport TN and Hot Springs NC.
That was a GREAT drive. LOVED IT!!!! and will probably go that way from now on.
Oh, and yeah I-40 is open now. Only one lane westbound, but both lanes eastbound....
I only recently discovered this route as a valid detour to Asheville from Knoxville. I have always had aversions to driving through Cocke County (those of you from the area will know what I'm talking about). But I'm with you, it was a beautiful drive that was easier on the gas tank than the 81\26 detour.
