Clutch is an American rock band from Germantown, Maryland, formed in 1990.
History Clutch formed in 1990 by vocalist Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines, and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster. The group debuted with Pitchfork, an EP released in October that same year. They built a local following through constant gigging, and after the release Passive Restraints (through Earache), Clutch was signed by East West Records. Their full length debut, Transnational Speedway League, followed in 1993. A self-titled album appeared two years later and afforded Clutch some mainstream exposure. They then, signed with major Columbia label for 1998's The Elephant Riders2000's Jam Room was released on their own, River Road Records. In 2001, Pure Rock Fury was released on Atlantic. Their sixth album, Blast Tyrant, appeared three years later and was the first through DRT Entertainment. Followed by Robot Hive/Exodus in 2005, which featured the first lineup change since the early 1990s, the addition of organist Mick Schauer. 2007 saw the release of From Beale Street to Oblivion. The band again formed their own label in 2008, after Clutch experienced repeated issues with various record labels, resulting in band members deciding that the band would benefit more from creating their own record label rather than continuing to take risks with other labels. At the moment, Weathermaker Music is only known to work with Clutch and side project The Bakerton Group. The band's first live DVD, Full Fathom Five, and accompanying CD, produced/directed by Agent Ogden, were released in September 2008. In 2009, they released Strange Cousins from the West as a four-piece, removing Schauer from the line-up. On March 9th, 2010, the band announced via its Myspace page, a 2 disc DVD set CLUTCH LIVE AT THE 9:30 via Weathermaker Records, due for a May 11, 2010 release. The set includes the entire December 28th, 2009 show at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 club, which the band performed the entire self-titled LP. The 2nd disc is to include a documentary entitled "Fortune Tellers Make a Killing Nowadays", which is rumored to include material from as far back as 1991.
Side project Bakerton Group: In the late 1990s, the members of formed Clutch its sibling project The Bakerton Group (an instrumental jam band). Orginally the band was composed of Clutch members Maines, Sult and Gaster. Schauer joined the band during the time he was with Clutch and later Fallon joined the band on guitar). The Bakerton Group has released one three-track EP, Space Guitars, a self-titled full length album and a full length album titled El Rojo. Bakerton Group are also performing at Bonnaroo this year, probably in a cafe.
