eeh, the issue is that the industry hasnt found a way to fully utilize the internet. the music being made right now is totally worthy of being paid for, its just that you dont have to. saying bands just need to start making good music and then people will start paying for it is a pretty ignorant view of whats going on. bands need to find a way to make money despite all their fans stealing the music. how? that is their job to figure out not mine. ill just continue to keep searching google for what i want to hear.

I'd like to see more bands embracing the internet and giving away albums for free rather than waiting for them to be stolen. Fact of the matter is, unless you are Gaga or Daughtry, bands don't make a terrible amount of money on album sales anyway. Most income comes from touring and merch. Give away album downloads, press 1,000 or 2,000 or whatever copies of a cool vinyl package and be done with it.
Tours still make money. People still go to tours. Bonnaroo has to be making money also.
yes they do, and according to that article these "360" deals are giving record companies a cut of band merch and touring income as well, which makes touring less profitable for bands.
The problem is the record labels have been reduced to distribution chains. Their function has been usurped by internet promotion and bands and indie labels acting as A&R reps. Most bands only need a label to press and distribute the record anymore. The problem is the labels are used to getting paid for a lot more than just distribution, and are gouging bands at other income sources to stay afloat.
Major labels need to accept that they're now obsolete and take what they can get. Also, if downloads are to blame for the problem (and I don't believe they are), focus more on vinyl (which can't be downloaded), make download codes or CD copies w/ vinyl standard (which will eliminate the need for seperate CD pressings), and focus those CD recources on selling downloads to people who just want Mp3s for their iPod.
