I'm extremely dissapointed with this lineup, but I decided to try something to maybe view this more positively and see if I would actually be getting a good deal out of going. I listed the bands that I'm most excited about and wouldn't mind seeing. Then I put how much I would be willing to pay to see them if they were to stop by Atlanta, my home town. Keep in mind that I am neccessarily I big fan of all these bands and the prices listed are what it would take to entice me enough to attend one of their shows. If the total amount comes out to more than the ticket price and most of the expenses, then I consider it a good deal. Here it is: 30 Jay-Z 35 Flaming Lips (Although, I wouldn't pay anything if they were only doing DSOTM) 35 Phoenix 10 Dead Weather 10 Black Keys 40 LCD Soundsystem 20 The xx 10 GWAR 20 Dan Deacon 20 The Melvins 10 Gaslight Anthem 10 They Might Be Giants 10 Isis 10 Blitzen Trapper 10 Baroness 20 Neon Indian 10 Here We Go Magic
$290 total. NOT A DEAL. That is about the cost of the ticket alone. Then there is camping gear, gas, food, beer, "fun stuff", time off work. And besides that, even when many of the bands liste above come to my town, I don't bother to see them. There is just no way I can justify going this year, except to make my girlfriend happy.
I've wondered this for a long time, and I guess the lineup just brings it back to the forefront: How did Kings of Leon become a headliner-level band? Some bands you watch as they go from relative unknowns, then put out a sick level of energy at their smaller shows, which leads to greater word-of-mouth, and then they get big. I'm thinking along the lines of MMJ, and to a lesser extent, Umphrey's.
But Kings of Leon? I saw their Bonnaroo set in 2004, and again in 2007. I've also caught them at a 3/4 capacity show at Deer Creek, and a headlining set at ACL in 2009. I'm not arguing that they ARE popular enough to headline, but I'm just trying to figure out what sets them apart from any other average rock band. To me, a band like OK Go would've seemed just as likely (or unlikely) to headline a festival like Bonnaroo at this point in their careers. What sets KoL apart? What am I missing?
Ok Go headlining any festival let alone Roo? BAHAHAHHAHAH. Dude. Get yo head checked bro. I mean I'm definately not a KoL guy, but Ok Go? Seriously. Laugh My Mother F*cking Azz Off
Ok, you're completely missing my point. OK Go shouldn't headline any festival, we all get that. What I'm saying is, 4-5 years ago, OK Go and KoL would have been at roughly the same popularity level. Now, they're on completely different ends of the spectrum, and appropriately, different ends of the lineup.
That being said, I don't see a huge difference in talent level/songwriting ability/live show performance and energy between the two. In fact, the only notable thing that either band seems to have had going for it was that OK Go music video that went viral a few years ago.
So again, for those who read my original post: what is it about the band that you think so quickly elevated Kings of Leon to headlining status?
not sure if youre up to form with live daily, but it is the biggest music tour source on the internet. Been reading it for over three years and its never wrong on tours and tour dates. Not once have they posted a wrong article.
Hahaha I'm counting once cause I don't think he's a late add. And posting tour dates is a little different than leaking a Bonnaroo top six act.

You're right man I must have skipped over the part where you said at that point in their careers. So i apologize for being a *dick. But the difference is KoL got huge, whether any of us like it or not, and Ok Go did not. If you're looking for reasons why, you won't find it in talent cause KoL is sh*tty. But while Ok Go had a video go viral for a few weeks, KoL went global with two songs for months. They swept up the grammys. There are way more people who like bad music than those who like good music, wayyyyy more. Just listen to the radio for proof.

what if you used figures on how much it actually cost to go to those shows?
OH YOU MEAN THERE ARE OTHER EXPENSES BESIDES BUYING THE TICKET?!?! WOW BROSEF THATS SOME HARD HITTING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM RIGHT THERE THANKS!
you can stay home. send your girlfriend. i'll keep her happy.

So...I guess the servers are still down at Bonnaroo HQ...still no BIG anouncement today...hahahahaha
PS...to the kid complaining about security, 6 years of Roo here and NEVER has a cop even said a word to me...and 3 of the 6 I was waived right to the ticket collectors without my car being searched. Just saying. I go with a crew of about 10...2-3 cars...and NONE of us have EVER had an issue.
And I have no doubt been critical on the lineup but it is Bonnaroo...a $300 ticket is ALWAYS worth it; I will gladly pay it and have the best 4 days of the year.

That's a clever way to look at it but I think it works better as a way to compare different lineups rather than an absolute decision maker. Using that metric this year's lineup is 30-40% worse for me than the past 2 years, which is in line with my gut feeling about the lineup.
However, using your method, even the best year's lineup for me doesn't come close to covering all the costs associated with Bonnaroo. The specific acts playing only account for maybe half of my overall expereince. The other half is all the other stuff: camping with friends, exploring Centeroo, enjoying the food, "experimenting", and just soaking in the good vibes.
And there's always the surprise music acts that you would of never seen for any price normally but you end up having a great time at.

I like the posters in this thread who side with "IF U DONT LIEK THE LINEUP DONT BUY A TIKET DERP DERP". The reason a good deal of us are complaining about the lineup is because we have been to Bonnaroo previous times, and have been treated to stellar lineups that we would be willing to pay $250+ for. Bonnaroo is one of those things some of us look forward to with great anticipation, and when we get this crapfest lineup, damn right we're going to be pissed.
So for the rest of you, go listen to Dave Matthews and drink a bucket of antifreeze.

Yea I agree it's a tired response, especially because if your complaining about the lineup the festival probably means a lot to you.

lol your prices are full of fail. I paid $20 for a parking pass to see Jay-z. $60 for the ticket alone. What you are willing to pay is nowhere near realistic. Sorry you want music for free...you usually get the quality that you pay for. $10 will get me gas to go to a $20 cover band show.

You're missing the point of the exercise. You go by the price you personally are willing to pay to see the act. It's theoretical, to get an estimate of what the Bonnaroo lineup is worth to you.
By your logic, even if I don't like Jay-Z, I'm getting $80 worth of entertainment from seeing him because that's how much it would cost for parking and the ticket.

if thats gonna be your basis for judgment throw in 4 days of camping, ferris wheel, batting cages, fuse tent, arcade, art of such and such, silent auction....need I go on.? Take into account security, electricity, water, porta john rentals, etc. Get where im going?

Yep, I made that point like 5 posts back. I was just explaining the (supposed) logic of the exercise

Where are you going with this? We should be paying for toilets? And ferris wheel isn't free its like 8 bucks. And you're dropping thirty bucks on a cover band? Damn wish i was loaded.

That is exactly my point! That is how much the acts are worth to ME. Not only that, but these are some of the costs that I have actually paid to see some of these acts before and some of the acts would need some pretty attractive ticket prices for me to go. I am also considering the fact that I live in walking distance or at most 2 mile drive from most of the music venues in my hometown. For example, I am about to walk over to Criminal Records at 7:00 and watch a free performance by Cold Cave. Another thing. I am not looking for the my system's costs to cover every expense, but yeah, a large portion. I just want to see a justifiable reason for forking over the dough. If I was abslolutely, crazy, totally excited, ie Pavement, Arcade Fire, Liars, Hold Steady, Hot Chip, "bands with 2010 releases" on the lineup, I wouldn't even care to break it down this way. I'd be a lot more passionate about it and the costs associated wouldn't be the issue (as much and definitely no the deciding factor)

Ive been admittedly hard on Bonnaroo this year. I get pretty emotional because Ive spent most of my 20's (03 - Now) going to this fest yearly. As I was staring at the lineup just now, internally griping about the headliners I thought... "Wait, Ive gone to Bonnaroo before and mother trucking Widespread Butt Cheeks headlined 2 nights and I still had an absolute blast! Why am I freaking out so much?" I said it years ago and Im applying it to this years lineup.
Any Bonnaroo lineup that doesnt include Widespread Panic is awesome, flat out.
*sigh* i too am coming around. the undercard is fine. the headliners are mediocre. the people are great. the scene is wonderful. the weekend is a blast........BOOOOOONNNNARRRRROOOOOOOOOO
edit: i still want some great additions though, don't get me wrong.

hell yeah man, you were like number one against it too.
