Two years in a row somebody in our group were searched be DTF cops with guns entering the camping area. It's random and unconstitutional. I have only had the cops search me once in four years but it was way more intense than the volunteers. They were going through everything like they were thieves looking for some lute and not putting things back. It is not cool at all. We haven't got in trouble. It's the simple fact that it's an invasion of privacy. Wait till it happens to you.

dont go to the fucking festival then. when you are entering their grounds, they have the right to search you. period. if you dont want to be searched, theres a simple solution DONT FUCKING GO
Sure the headliners are smaller and lots of the bands can be seen locally but it's not the same.
The main difference in seeing a band locally and seeing them at Roo (other than the general atmosphere) is that most bands really "bring it" at Roo. They play extra songs, longer sets, improvise more and often play with other artists in attendance.
Examples include (and I could give dozens) Primus in '04; (I've seen them many times but never for a 4 hours late night mud fest like at Roo); FLips doing the rare saucer show in '07 and the Dark Side this year, The Umphrey's - Bisco merged show in '06, the Eddie Vedder-Jack Johnson get together in '08, and the many Superjam's (which may or may not recur).
Roo is different from just seeing a band. I can understand not driving cross country for these bands when money's tight and other fests might be closer/better and I respect that but I live close and so won't miss a Roo.

I will say this. Stevie Wonder and Jay-z are, for my money, two of the best headliners that have ever graced the What Stage. See also Radiohead, Pearl Jam, and The Dead.

We have a different definition then. I love the Flaming Lips, one of my favorite bands, but they're not a special band for Bonnaroo to get. Give me a band that doesn't tour the states, or is only playing one festival, that's a special band to get. I'm glad Bonnaroo did get them this year, but would've liked to see some other more special acts.
Also while we're on topic, I'd rather see them do 4 hours of their own material than see them do DSOTM.

Festivals are WAY more fun if their gone about in a safe and legal way!

Throw out some of your past wow bands. Also I'm listening to John Prine's Common Sense for the first time and can't help but say wow. Also just the sheer number of aging legends that I would otherwise never have the chance to see keeps making me say wow.
Also I have been asking myself whether or not I would rather just have them do their own material, but I do love their version of Dark Side, think it will be a more special once in a lifetime thing, and will flat out blow my mind, leave my face on the ground, and all those other wonderful things that those latenight shows and supplements will do.
See em do darkside? And yes they are most definately a wow band.
They aren't a "wow" band. They tour all the time and do tons of festivals.
As NoDe said, different definitions. I may see em at Lolla as well, I will be "wowed" both times I'm quite sure. Also their show at roo will blow away the one at Lolla that is for sure. I haven't seen em before and I'm sure there are a ton of people like me who haven't seen em, love them, and were absolutely "wowed" when Wayne spilled the beans.
I'm not excited about the headliners this year but that's not what it's about for me. I've been going to Bonnaroo since 2002 & every year, I discover SO MANY new artists that I didn't know about prior to the festival. I am very excited to go through this years line up, check out the MySpace pages of everyone, & discover some artists that will blow me away. Every year, this festival provides me with an opportunity to expand my musical knowledge & I will be forever grateful for the opportunity.

How is it unconstitutional? You are going onto private property and AC/Superfly has the right to search you. They bring in DTF cops to do it and you get searched.
As someone else said, if you don't want to possibly be searched, don't frackin go.
