ps... don't know how much merit to put with what I heard, but a friend of mine that works with SPIN magazine texted me and said Superfly had Elton John last minute, but he turned it down because hes coming off tour with Billy Joel. Take it for what it's worth, but I can say this for a fact... from what I hear talking around my friends in the music magazine world, this is not how it was suppose to go down. I get the feeling/hearing that one or two bigger names were suppose to be on this lineup and dropped last mintue. Was told that original lineup was in fact suppose to come out Feb 2nd and tickets go on sale Feb 6th, but things broke down and it was a scramble. Mark at SPIN told me that as of a few weeks ago he had only heard DMB and Jay-Z being 100% on board. Im guessing Neil and/or Stone or Who dropped and it was mad dash to replace. Bottom line, Kings of Leon are not a top three headliner. Becoming more clear hour by hour that this was a fill in the gaps job where they just pushed things back and tried to hype it up as much as possible. I can only assume they out the tickets on sale the day the lineup was announced to get that intial impact purchase. Putting the bands out one by one might have just got them those few extra thousand people that might not have bought the tickets if they sat down and thought the lineup through. If you honestly look at it, no real major "Legend" headliner, lineup release date pushed back, and the myspace/twitter webpage was all screwed up until about 4 hours into the process. Not for nothing but just seems shotty. oh and the ROO CLUE: tom and jerry minus art... that was Paul Simon solo, but he pulled out as well. Rolling Stone even reported that! So you know stuff is messed up in those superfly offices right now
i was reading the CoS interview with ashley capps today and she mentioned that one of the headliners wasn't around 10 years ago making me think that KoL is definitely going to be an unopposed headliner unfortuantly...this was very dissapointing to see that said
Wow. Maybe they should just cancel it and spare everyone the pain. Woe is you. Some of you need a spanking for being so ungrateful. Or sent to the corner with no music.(For those of you against corporal punishment). It's BONNAROO guys!!! It will be fantastic and you know it.

this is interesting and very believable.
I very much doubt the legitimacy of this post given that Elton is (and has been scheduled to be for some time) in Eastern Europe during all of Roo...

I'll have a great time, and I"m already starting to get into a lot of the artists I didn't know before, but I will admit, juxtapose past lineups and this is a step down even from 2005...
ok, I was going to refrain from comment but if in fact the promoters DO read these boards then what I have to say needs to be said in the way that I am going to say it. If I piss anyone off in the process I sincerely apologize.
First off, I bought my ticket in presale and am planning to go and have a good time whatever. I'm with some of the others I've seen here who are excited about undercard acts and late night possibilities and will probably use headliner time slots to recharge, regroup and get my second wind - except for Stevie, the other 2 headliners (if in fact KOL and DMB are headliners) do very little for me. Not even sure I would consider Stevie a headliner but he's a legend and should be a good show.
Now as far as the way this has been handled by the promoters thus far - here getting to the meat of my posting:
I think that some good old-fashioned up-front truth would have gone a long way in making this whole package more palatable to many people. If there were some big acts that pulled out or whose negotiations fell through, then rather than pushing the release date back and then releasing the lineup...all the smoke and mirrors and stupid internet tricks....why not just release a preliminary lineup and tell us up front that some details still have to be ironed out, or that some things still in works, last minute changes, etc....(choice of words irrelevant and did not have to reveal any details)
truth is always the best policy. My profession (medicine) sometimes involves the delivery of bad news and/or outcomes not being great, but I find that people can handle even bad news much better than conveyed with an element of truth, sincerity, and concern.
Now I also understand that concert promoters have profit as their main objective and are not in the business of caring necessarily. But especially in these tough economic times, regardless of the industry or sector of society, customer service and decency are more crucial than ever as we all have to be more discerning about where we spend our money.
I think that somewhere in this whole process that ball got dropped - it is not lost totally and there is time to pick it back up. Whether that means adding another act or acts we really wanted or just acknowledging that things did not go well...it will go a long, long way.
Just something to think about, "powers that be"
just my humble observations and musings. I'm looking forward to a good time regardless.
if i could give you a crustie i would. this is right on.
This is the first time since 07 that Bonnaroo hasn't had a headlining metal act. 07 it was Tool, 08 Metallica, 09 Nine Inch Nails, and in 2010 we have.....Gwar? Don't get me wrong, I like Gwar and would love to see them live, but it's bullhonkey brah if their shafting us on a big name hard rock/heavy metal act.
Proof that people will Ann Coulter about anything....wah I didnt get 150 artists I wanted wah. Please stay home. Ill need the extra room to dance. Superfly doesnt OWE any of you an explanation.

being so ungrateful? excuse me? we're the ones shelling out hundreds of dollars.

yeah i'm sure the promoters feel the same way as you
lol. why would the promoters want people who bash their festival going to their festival?
i think you're missing my point. i've been going to bonnaroo since 03. this is the first year - as of right now - i will not be attending. i've never put down bonnaroo before. this line up is terrible. we as ticket buyers are MOST CERTAINLY owed some sort of explanation for the way things were handled, and if there is a good reason for the lackluster line up then we are owed that too. to say we aren't is absolutely ridiculous. the promoters would want me at their festival because i'm an avid supporter who represents a demographic of people who are extremely unimpressed with this whole situation. that's why.
being so ungrateful? excuse me? we're the ones shelling out hundreds of dollars.
if you don't like the lineup....you don't need to shell out hundreds of dollars. bash the lineup if you choose....but don't complain about the money as if you're forced to go to the fest and pay it.

you're missing the point - as PROMOTERS - superfly/ac WANTS me (an avid bonnaroo goer) to continue going to their festival. NO i am not FORCED to shell out hundreds of dollars. BUT bonnaroo promoters want me to. See, this is their job. i like you, and i think you know this stuff so i don't know why you're not getting this.

I like the lineup - but people have every right to complain about it. Very annoying how some people are putting down those who don't like it. Bonnaroo is not some infallible entity that cannot be bashed.

Each year, people look forward to going to Bonnaroo. They WANT to spend $400-$500+ to have a great time. They look forward to it all year round. But, when a dud of a lineup is released like the dud that was released yesterday, these people can't pay $400-$500+.
Imagine, if you will, that you are an 10 year old gentile child. It's December 24th. You've been waiting all year for the following morning. You wait impatiently in bed all nite, and finally it's 9 A.M. and you rush downstairs! There are your parents waiting for you. They've got presents! You open the first. It's empty. "Very funny," you say. You open the second. It's empty. And the third. THEY'RE ALL EMPTY. You are empty. There is no Christmas.

It should also be noted, a lot of people vocally bitching already bought tickets, so they sort of have a right to bitch about the lineup if they don't like it.
I count five legends, (Stevie, Jay, Jeff Beck, Kris Kristofferson, Flips)
Dude... you left out four of the biggest musical legends on the card: John Prine, Jimmy Cliff, Jack White, and Les Claypool.
And I'd put TMBG, Nas, and Tori Amos in the "should be legends" category.
You are completely right man. I totally forgot Jimmy Cliff i have no idea how. The other three I just haven't really listened to enough to consider them like that, but what I have heard of them I love and I'll probably agree with you on all four. I also referenced Nas with the god's son remark, him and damien is such a great show.

well if you were going to a festival based on the lineup, whjy would you buy tickets before you knew the lineup? seems like a little common sense goes a long way
Considering Ashley Capps promised to match or top previous years and that we had big surprises in store coupled with the horrendous slow reveal from yesterday and all of the tweet hints that we would get more than a very mediocre top two, I don't think the "quit whining and go somewhere else" argument really holds up for people who didn't expect to be lied to by AC and bought pre-sale.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

Its all subjective....I prefer this lineup to last years by a looooooong mile.

Whether you like the headliners this year more or not, we have ACL's #2 and #3 acts, one of which was Lolla's #6 and the other of which will be touring in a city near you every year until he dies. Nothing impressive or surprising about those gets, whether you like them or not.
