So for those of us in college it's getting towards exam week. While I don't really have any exams, I have a sh it ton of papers to complete before the 17th. What music do you guys listen to when you study? Is it a distraction or does it help you out.
So far I've been listening to Neil Young, MMJ, Washed Out, Neon Indian, The xx these past few days.
I have to study with music on and a bag of M&M's by my side. I usually study with something that doesn't have any words so I can't sing along, which usually means a good jazz record. With this being exam week, I have been listening to Hugh Masakela & the Union of South Africa a lot this week.

Keith Jarrett's The Koln Concert is my favorite thing to study to. I can't study with lyrics, so I can't really go the Neil Young/Neon Indian route. I always end up paying more attention to the music than the writing. But some Miles Davis sets me into a groove that helps me crank out the papers. Sigur Ros is more of my studying as in studying for a science exam kinda thing.
I actually like to listen to Indian Classical music when I study. Ravi Shankar will do, but the South Indian stuff really gets me going, like Lalgudi Jayaraman or Ravikiran.
Another thing that works is music with lyrics I don't understand. I don't speak French, so Stereolab works pretty well.

I'm finding Boards of Canada is working pretty well right now.
I don't really need to retain information right now as much as barf it up in Word and hope for the best. I've had about ten years experience in bullshi.tting papers, so this shouldn't be that hard.
I usually try to keep it instrumental when I'm studying. Lately I've been rocking Ratatat, STS9, Umphrey's, some Jazz (Coltrane, Blakey, Miles, etc) and Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Music definitely helps my studying, but the cool people on these boards tend to distract me...

I am way past the studying for exams portion of my life. But I can't do anything else except listen to music when I listen to music. It's hard for me to converse with someone else when there is good music on. I recently took a girl to a show and she kept trying to talk and I kept shushing her. Needless to say, we are not going on any future dates.

Russian Circles is working well for me because there are no lyrics.
I must have music, while I work, while I study, pretty much when I do anything, but I find myself getting caught up in the lyrics or singing along instead of studying sometimes

I feel like Pink Floyd is awesome background music anytime, Simon and Garfunkel are up there, and Fela Kuti is good because you can forget that its on and then all of a sudden youll remember you're listening to it and you realize how awesome it is
