Today, Sony is releasing 5 2-CD sets by performers at the (original) Woodstock festival. Each set consists of the artist's complete Woodstock performance and an album by that artist released around the same time as the festival:
Jefferson Airplane's Volunteers Sly and the Family Stone's Stand! Janis Joplin's I Got Them Ol Kozmic Blues Again, Mama Johnny Winter's debut album Johnny Winter Santana's debut album Santana
Unfortunately, while most of these albums have been recently reissued with bonus tracks, none of the bonus tracks appear on this release.
So my question is, how good are the live discs in these performances? Are they so good that they make the sets a worth buying/a good gift for someone who already has the albums tied to them? I know Sly's performance at Woodstock is legendary, and Santana's got great reviews too. How do the recordings sound?
Janis put on a good show and they cleaned up the sound. If they ever come out with the Grateful Dead's set do not buy it. I have the bootleg and it sucks. They were telling the truth when they said it was the worst show they ever performed.
