I'm done - ya'll hate on them all you want - fact still is - they are the ones you dial up when your nuts is being stolen, your mother, daughter or girlfriend has been raped, you have been mugged.
Yet you want to sit and Ann Coulter about them arresting you for druq violations or speeding or any number of other broken laws.
It's simple - obey the law and they are pretty good guys - break the law and you take your chances.
I know the cops where I live are there to protect and serve and I would not hesitate to call them and fully expect that they would be there within minutes.
Wow, that must be a nice little bubble to live in where there in no corruption in you local government. Yes I know they perform a public service and are useful at times. And I myself have known a couple who were really top-notch, good people. Unfortunately, the vast majority that I've known were drunks/racists/perverts/cheated on their wives. I don't trust someone with those kind of skewed moral values to properly uphold their duty to the public. It's a business, it's about money and power, just like any other business.

Well, I hate cops, but without them, our lives would be much worse. Over 30 years, I have been lucky and only had one run in with a cop besides traffic tickets. I was fairly drunk coming back from a bachelor party and riding dirty too. I got pulled over when my car died at a stop sign. I had to blow into the breathalyzer twice because I was blew .07. I had enough smoke on me for a felony charge and he let me drive home. Close one.

Yup - I live in a nice little bubble in the suburbs with the house, minivan and 3 kids, a good secure government job and my disillusionment about what a fine police force we have in the small suburb I live in.
It's great - we left for Bonnaroo - put a call in - had a house watch set and lo and behold - they did their job - kept an eye on the house and even after we called when we got home - the next morning had a cop knocking n the door to make sure it was us.
Of course, the fact that I did criminal defense for a vast number of years and know most of the cops in the area never hurts for me - it my bubble and I like it.

You can actually call the police and tell them to watch your house for you while you're out of town? That thought never would've even occurred to me. Of course, with my luck I'd probably do that and then come home to like 5 court summons tacked to my front door

LOL - yup - you can call them and tell then that you will be gone and ask for a housewatch. Even let themknow that there would be a kid here every day to feed the cats - gave a description of her car and it was all good

Boy, you do live in a bubble. What you are describing sounds like a a gated community, and the majority of Americana does not have access to such a lifestyle.
The vast, vast majority of people are required to hire a security company to do what you are describing.

Actually, I don't live in a gated community in Alabama and you can do the same thing..

Nope - no gated community - actually a very diverse neighborhood withing walking distance from a variety of stores, the mall and a major thoroughfare through the city. Just happen to have a really good police department with great officers.
I live in the metro Jackson area which was just listed as 4th for murders per capita - the crime rate in the city itself has soared over the last few years - but our little suburb is thriving and alot of it has to do with great schools, low crime and a great city government.
If it's a bubble, I sure do like it.

Of course you like it. You are being afforded a form of security that most people will never have access to. Do you realize how expensive such a service would be if every citizen was given it? It isn’t realistic to provide such a thing to society at large, nor would I want to live in a society with enough law enforcement officers on hand to supply universal security.

lol at everyone attacking Meg because she has had better experiences with cops than they have. I've known great cops and i've also had run-ins with cops who were pretty douchey. Just because you've had negative experiences doesn't mean you should turn your back on police officers.
It reminds me of something Bill Hicks said : I've had good and bad sexual experiences.....but i'm not giving up pu$$y.

I’m not attacking Meg at all. I disagree with much of what she has said, but that is hardly an attack on her person.
I will also mention that some of the funds used for such high level security she is being afforded is likely generated by draconian search and seizure laws from a ridiculous drug war.

Actually - most of the funds used to provide for the excellent police force in my city come from a high tax base in the county and the city itself which is the result of an awesome mayor and good city government that work really hard to entice businesses to locate in our city.
And I could care less if someone wants to attack me because I have had virtually nothing but good experiences with officers. I think - in general - they are great guys doing their jobs to provide for their families. they don't get paid nearly what they should be paid for providing the services they do provide.
But that is also the conservative, law abiding Rebuplician coming out in me. I rarely would have any reason for them to harass me or even pull me over - other then doing a few slow and go's at a stop sign or speeding.
Everyone has their opinions and most opinions are based on personal experience. I've never had a bad experience with and LEO and doubt that I ever will

I’m also a conservative “mostly” law abiding citizen. I’m the type of conservative that finds a high tax base discourages business, and have never found a community of any size that was not profiting from the drug war. I’m a die hard Ron Paul republican., My negative experiences all happened over 20 years ago, but the impression left remains to this day.
My main point is that police aren’t truly designed to protect, so my main disagreement is the flippant attitude that we will all be eagerly calling the police in times of trouble. I’ll call them because I need a police report, not because they are going to come flying to my rescue or will recover my lost stuff.

I just hate the cops tendencies to profile. It may be more of a VA thing, but as a young male with somewhat shaggy hair I have been given more shyt by cops for doing nothing than I care to recount. I've been sitting at a coffee shop smoking a hand rolled cigarette and they came up and had to inspect what was inside and asked if they could search my car cause I "smelled like pot." I've been pulled over for doing 39 in a 35 at 3 am cause I "appeared intoxicated" on my way home. Both of these times I was perfectly clean and had nothing to worry about, but at the same time I thought I wouldn't have to worry about even talking to police either.
It's just funny how something we all clearly need to function properly in life can be such a hassle and a pain in the arse at the same time.

Many women have better experiences with male cops than men do. The ticketing ratio of male to female is absurd, and skews insurance premiums as well.
We left Atlanta around 5pm wed, and left Roo just before the Phish encore. Did not get hasseled at all both ways. And we have no tag on our 30 year old popup.

wow....the idea of having cops watching the house while i'm gone in a place like bushwick is almost laughable...but maybe that's cuz it's a place that actually needs watching by the cops! where i grew up in suburban southern california (many of) the cops i knew were polite, respectful, and actually tried to do their jobs to the best of their ability (and sometimes very lenient--my cousin even had cops give him back a three foot b0ng after they rolled him once), but here in brooklyn they just seem to not want to get shot. which is understandable, but it does get in the way of the whole "protecting and serving" thing in a lot of cases. that being said... the horse po at bonnaroo were pretty nice to me, i had no complaints about them and they were actually pretty helpful when we had questions.
The problem with many cops is graphically depicted in this video. Granted, the girl isn't too bright and obviously deserved to be in a cell that day, but this response was completely out of line.
What makes it worse is how much the judicial system maintains a double standard in events such as this. If you or I had acted in this manner, we'd be off to jail for quite a while. This cop, however, was only charged with misdemeanor assault in the 4th degree. What a crock.
The hypocrisy practiced by the majority of cops is disgusting. Like state troopers pull people over for speeding yet surely speed while off duty, knowing that they'll never get a ticket.

I have no crocks with die polizien in my area. I received a DUI when I deserved it. The cop even drove me home with no bail because I went along with the procedure. My case was dropped with a good attorney and I got off without charges due to a technicality. I learned my lesson and I no longer drive intoxicated.
Cops only do their job. Don't speed, drive drunk, or transport drugs and you will be okay. People who have problems with the cops need to take a step outside themselves and evaluate who they are as a productive member of society.
I avoid the 5-0 at all costs, but I hope they come to my aid when I need them. Everyone who feels that the 5-0 are power hungry needs to pay attention during their next local election. You all vote these people into office.
