i really don't see daft punk being a headliner. i honestly don't know who they are, other than seeing their name tossed around this board. i wouldn't know a daft punk song it slapped me in the face. i understand that's probably me not being "in the loop", But i consider myself at least as in the loop as the average roo fan (alot of people i talked to last year didnt know who the raconteurs or jack white were). i mean my parents knew the top 10 names in this year's line-up other than probably wilco.
a headliner needs to be a bigger name than daft-punk. im not saying they couldnt pull it off, but they will not have a slot that is in 7-1130pm window at the waht stage. those spots will go to bigger names.
In all honesty, if Daft Punk does play, and I would bet on it, they'll play late night. Whether it be on What, such as Kanye, or Which, such as NIN. They are roughly on the same level as Kanye & NIN in terms of popularity and widespread appeal, so it does make sense.
Daft Punk is huge with a lot of hard-core music fans, such as the people on this board. However, a lot of the people that would go to Bonnaroo or have gone in the past, such as most of my friends, wouldn't be persuaded by Daft Punk headlining like had by headliners in the past (Phish, Bruce, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Police, Petty, Metallica, Dead, DMB, Neil Young) or other names being thrown around for next year (McCartney, Rage, Stevie Wonder, RHCP, Stones).
I see them taking the Which Stage, or even the What, after Friday's headliner.
They fit the slot of the 'Fourth Headliner' that acts such as Kanye, Nine Inch Nails, White Stripes have filled in the past perfectly, though.
Like they avoided Death Cab For Cutie and the Ting Tings and Maroon Five?
True, but I feel like bands like All American Rejects don't even have an ounce of artistic credibility and Roo fanbase. Death Cab has a bunch of indie cred and doesn't have near the commercial viability that generic bands like AAR have. They still tour with up and coming indie bands like Ra Ra Riot (who you should know since they're from your hometown.) Ben Gibbard getting married to Zooey Deschanel (b*stard!) who is in a band with Roo approved M.Ward. So say what you will about Death Cab, but they make a lot more sense at Bonnaroo than AAR.
Ting Tings were an established festival band and seemed to cross over mainstream and alternative fans. A bunch of people on the board were excited to see them, same with Death Cab. I think if you brought bands like the ones pondo suggested, they would not have the same Roo backing.
Maroon 5 doesn't make much sense. But they didn't end up playing anyway if I remember correctly.
You guys know that Deathcab was at roo last year right?? There is no way Deathcab or M ward would ever headline Bonnaroo..not to say they wont be there..but not as headliners..come on have you guys been to roo??
Has Van Morrison been mentioned? Has he done much festival-headlining? I know his recent Astral Weeks performances were highly acclaimed, and I have a double live album of his from the 70s that is just incredible.
Daft Punk is a big enough name to headline probably, but I think it's more likely they get that NIN/Lips slot on the Which. Though the sound bleed from that would ruin all of the other late nights. I think there's a pretty good chance they play Bonnaroo one year, but man, I sure hope they don't.

Daft Punk needs the What stage for sure. They are big enough to be the headliner at any festival in WORLD. The thought of the sounds Daft Punk "ruining" anything baffles me..

I love Van Morrison. I feel he's one of the great songwriters of his era. I saw him at Jazzfest at few years ago. It was a good, but not great show. His show's are notoriously inconsistant.
I'd like to see him at Bonnaroo. He would probably have a pre-headliner or end of the day Which Stage slot.
Daft Punk is interesting. I'm not an Electronica guy at all, but that stuff looked like a whole lot of fun. Late-night or headliner, I'd have to check it out.

I could see Van on the farm.....but def not as headliner. He would be somewhere in the same spot as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Elivs Costello, BB King.......all legends in their own right but just aren't big enough to headline at this time.

As far as Van Morrison goes, I have read some truly brutal reviews of his shows (the show reviews section from Pollstar comes to mind). Inconsistent performances, Morrison being immobile and non-communicative, getting upset at people taking pictures all come to mind.
I love him and would love to see him but I don't know if even he would enjoy it.
I'm in agreement with your assessment of Daft Punk.
fifth...some up-and-coming acts will play The Roo as well. All American Rejects, Kevin Rudolph, Cassandra Kubinski, and Carolina Liar seem like plausible choice.
Sixth...Bands that have massive followings but for some odd reason you know nothing about will play the Roo in 2010 (Chairlift and The Mars Volta for some this year). Queens of the Stone Age, The Eagles of Death Metal and My life with the Thrill Kill Cult come to mind as possibilities.
There's a lot wrong with these statements here. First there is no way in hell All American Rejects, Kevin Rudolph, Cassandra Kubinski, and Carolina Liar will ever play Bonnaroo. Their fans include mostly tween girls, and last I checked Bonnaroo isn't going for that demographic. And really, up and coming? Do you not have any idea what up and coming means? These guys, especially AAR, will make more billboard charts than we'd like to admit. Unfortunately this is the type of music that is commercially viable in the classic sense of big money for the record label. Bonnaroo doesn't really search for that demographic.
Next, Chairlift do not have a massive following. If anything they are up and coming, and even then kind of fading. I find it hard to believe they have a secret massive following. The Mars Volta however are above this. They have proven themselves to be a popular touring group and are a pretty established group in the music community. Some may not understand them, or like them, but if you didn't know Mars Volta had a big following, especially on this board, you weren't looking hard enough.
Now I'm being nitpicky here with those last two statements you had, the others you had I could see. These were just ridiculous to me.
Up and coming to me means not able to Headline a huge festival but still have drawing power and still relatively new to the scene...could any of those acts (including AAR) headline Bonnaroo? Of course not. I think three of those acts (with the exception of AAR) could easily play on the Farm. AAR may be a stretch but I could see them as an outside shot.
Chairlift has a strange cult following. I know of several people who go to their shows like clockwork. They again are a band that few people know MUCH about The Mars Volta, to clarify my nitpicked statement, has a large following and I have had at least 15 people ask me how. They are a band that either you get or you don't. Most people who are not into The Mars Volta know VERY LITTLE about them.
Not to nitpicked getting nitpicked but this should clear up any confusion

daft punk is HUGE. f'n americans. they headlined vegoose one night and came on AFTER The Stooges (best show of my life btw). daft punk is one of the biggest/most influential bands in the world (just not really america). honestly, they could have a lot to do with a 60-70 K draw.
of course...IMO.
p.s. when kanye's bigger, faster, stonger is slapping you on the face, i have quite the surprise for you...
I agree with those of you who say that Daft Punk would be better suited for a late night on one of the stages than a headlining slot. Not only because of their light show and the fact that their type of techno is better suited for after dark, but also because I think there would be a lot of people who are not that into them and wouldn't really care for their show. I guess you could say the same about Metallica, but Metallica's stardom totally dwarfs that of Daft Punk.
Rooconteur, you seem to be quite music savvy, so I'm surprised you don't really know who they are. They're probably the biggest name in techno over the last 10 years, and have produced a ton of great songs. Even if you're not big on that kind of music, you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by skipping their show if they ever play Roo.
Well, when you put a giant picture like that in there it's pretty hard to argue. ???
That picture is awesome, that alone doesn't convince you Daft Punk at Roo? You could also check out the videos I posted those are pretty great too.
I didn't need the picture. I don't need the videos. I know who Daft Punk is and have for about a decade (WBER in Rochester -- the only station that matters -- was an early adopter). I just don't happen to agree that they are best suited for a What headliner.
Daft Punk is interesting. I'm not an Electronica guy at all, but that stuff looked like a whole lot of fun. Late-night or headliner, I'd have to check it out.
mojo - daft punk is amazing live. in my top performances that ive ever seen (was at lolla).
only thing that is "bad" - and this is my gf's perspective, and i get it - is that it's one long ass song. there is no stop and chit chat with the audience - there's just a shitload of untz and awesome.
it was also the biggest dance party ive ever been a part of.

if daft punk plays i think they'll have a set similar to friday this year where it will be semi late night. like phish was, and then they'll have a smaller headliner at the regular headlining spot.

i should say i dont know who they are. ive never heard them. ive never been big into techno, i guess. maybe they are that big and would draw more of that crowd. as far as skipping their, set. no way. that looks pretty badass. although i think late night what stage would be the best time for something like that.
daft punk will not headline bonnaroo (unless you call them the 4th or 5th "headliner"). has a techno/dj artist ever headlined roo before? nope...doesn't make sense to see a techno headliner...to me anyway. I'm sure some of you would love it, but even if Daft Punk were to headline they could never compare to real headliners like Neil Young, Phish, Tool, Radiohead, etc etc
edit, just to clarify I'd love to see DP at roo and cant wait to see their name on the lineup one year

For everyone who thinks Daft Punk couldn't headline because they aren't big with the roo fanbase, Daft Punk has such a draw among electronic music fans that it would bring so many new people to Bonnaroo. The average Bonnaroo attendee back in 2008 weren't Metallica fans, but look what happened there.

daft punk turned me on to electronica in general, i hadn't been much of a fan of the genre basically because id never been exposed to it before then. ive never seen daft punk live, but damn, they would be epic, and would get me back to the farm for sure next year.
how about a late(r) night show a la phish this year? except maybe start them at midnight or 1 instead of 11.
that way they could still do a double preheadliner thing like BB and byrne this year, and open up which and the tents for other groups.

I am a pretty big Daft Punk fan but I don't think they would/should headline. If they did it would have to be a double headliner thing like JJ/Pearl Jam or Beasties/Phish. They would be amazing starting around midnight. They would have to play the What stage unless their new stage setup is a good bit smaller than the Pyramid.

How long do they normally play? Because if they only play like 90-120 minutes like has been suggested there could be a headliner with a relatively easy set up play What and then afterwards at like 2 or 230 they could start. And if the stage set-up takes that long then maybe we could see the stage set up Thursday and have all the other bands including the headliner play in front of that, but then you would probably need a less egotistical headliner because that would draw away from their show. But anyway you look at it they aren't going to be the second highest billed act. That would be a major drop-off from this year.

For some reason I just don't see bonnaroo going through all that trouble and making daft punk their #1 priority, especially if they aren't even headlining.
I don't see daft punk being a headliner. If i'm wrong i'll be fine with it.......but I don't see it happening.
