I got the Audio Technica LP 120 (or something very similar) 6-7 years ago when I was still in school. I think the direct drive has been pretty durable and useful for occasions when my idiot friends (and in particular my roommates idiot ex-boyfriend) have not treated it with due care. Now I'm trying figure out if it's worth replacing the cartridge or if I should just save up and replace the whole damn thing with a belt drive.
I just downloaded this really cool app that syncs up with your Discogs account so you can have your collection and wantlist on your phone when you're out shopping. It should be really helpful since a lot of times I can't remember if I already have a record. It's called Crate Digger.
This will be released on December 4, 2012 if anyone is interested. $74 @ Amazon
VINYL FORMAT. Released in the US for the very first time on vinyl! 180 gram 4xLP features the original record spread out over 8 sides to ensure the optimum sound. Housed in a 12 x 12 rigid slipcase with 2 books containing personal notes, new collage artwork, lyrics and more.
EMI Music's extensive reissue campaign honoring the legacy of The Smashing Pumpkins continues when the iconic alternative band's fourth album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness receives the fully remastered treatment for the first time! The reissue project was remastered from the original analog masters and personally overseen by founding member Billy Corgan with extensive bonus material from the Pumpkins' archives.
When that album came out it blew my 15 year old mind away. I mean, Siamese Dream did too, but not quite like Mellon Collie.
Needle doctor is having a sale on Rega RP-1 turntables. $365 on certain colors, good deal for a vinyl newcomer that doesn't want to mess with a vintage deck.
and speaking to the direct drive vs belt drive debate, IMO both technologies can produce good sound if implemented well, what matters is what the user prefers. I adore my Technics SL1200Mk2, and will probably never sell it, even though I've found I ultimately prefer the sound of my Rega P3/24. both are great decks.

Probably. For the past few years I had it set up as "New/current stuff" and then on other shelves were all classic/older stuff. I cleaned my whole place and felt the need to alphabetize them.

I sort by mood/activity: Sunday brunch (motown, van morrison), making dinner (TRex, Girls), eating dinner (Bon Iver, Sigur Ros), drinking (LCD, Rolling Stones).

Anyone looking for awesome deals go to FatPossum.com. They just started their $10 for almost all LPs (and other items) that they do a few times a year. This is lasting until the end of December.
On-topic, I just learned that Massive Attack released a remastered-for-vinyl edition of Blue Lines? Has anyone heard this yet? This is one of my favorite albums ever so I don't think I could be more excited.
I haven't heard it yet, but FYI there is also a cardboard box set for $89.99 list that looks freakin' sweeeeeet. If it sits here on the shelf long enough, I'm gonna splurge for it one of these days. Stares me down every single day and makes me envious.
And the regular vinyl is a no-frills, single LP vinyl (not even a gatefold sleeve), whereas the deluxe edition has the album on two heavyweight (assuming 180g) LPs, which makes it even more tempting.

Has anyone mentioned Southern Lord's amazing vinyl reissue of Sleep's classic album Dopesmoker? Just issued a few weeks ago...2 LPs, beautiful, heavy gatefold packaging, deep purple vinyl, limited to 4000 copies. It's really the perfect way to reissue that record. Not too expensive either, lists at $29.98. More expensive than your average record, but not bad at all for a 2LP gatefold record on color vinyl.

It comes in more colors than just dark purple: www.southernlord.com/sleep.php Southern Lord is also reissuing High on Fire's first album "The Art of Self Defense" in Brown, Black, and Clear vinyl. But you can get both in purple vinyl and save $5 by getting the "Sleep / High on Fire - Purple Pack" package.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
