The amazing score I got at a flea market this morning. I could have done a lot more damage if only I had brought more cash with me. 24 albums for $35 bucks.
Hopefully the guy will be there next weekend and still have some good stuff left.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Maybe one of you can help me. I came across an older turntable that I managed to get working. While I think it may just need a new needle, I'm not positive. I started with an older record and when it ran smooth the quality sounded great, but it would almost go in an out, not skips more like losing the sound completely. I than tried a new album and it sounded amazing and I just wrote off the first one as being an old record and maybe the condition. I then tried another new album that needed to be played at 45rpm's. Same as the old one. Tried another new one at 33, same thing, played another new one at 45, sounded great. So there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which one sound good and which ones don't. Could it be the ones sounding good just happen to have the needle in a good spot when I played them? Another thing that may be worth noting, the ones that sounded bad, seemed to sound a little better with louder volume and the further it got into the album. Thanks in advance!

Have you set your alignment and VTF? your cart needs to be alogned for it to sound proper. Otherwise you could damage your needle and your record.

Scored an Akai belt-driven turntable for $20 off Craigslist a week or so ago. Been spinning all my old high school punk records since I found that box in the attic. An Inforoo Santa brought me Love- Forever Changes, Mogwai Remixes, Purity Ring & Live Cloud Nothings, all sound amazing. This afternoon I stuck gold again in an old funk & soul basement shop...Yuck, Black Joe Lewis, Thomas Dolby, Canned Heat, Issac Hayes double live, Barry White, Woodstock double, Hank Sr, Rare Hendrix, Zappa & Beefheart, Santana, all $2-3 bucks apiece. Life is grand.
Was killing time before the Deer Tick show last night and picked these up from Sound Fix in Williamsburg.

It really is. I haven't heard it in a little while and immediately when I saw it in the store I just snagged it out, ready to purchase it. No hesitation at all.
I think this thread has overtaken Now Playing as my favorite thread. I love looking at people's actual LPs. Records are beautiful. Not just the sound of it, but the images, the liner notes, the lyrics, the physical "beingness" of it.
Every time someone my age starts talking about the generation behind us screwing things up grumble, grumble, I point out to them that that generation is buying real mf'ing records - and if that doesn't make you think the kids are alright, than nothing will.
Ikea is the best option IMO for record storage. I don't have an Ikea close by, so I bought these interlocking cherry hardwood crates from Tony's Woodshop. He also made the matching interlocking base and top. I am very pleased with them, they look nice and will last forever. And I can always buy more as my collection expands, which it looks like I'll need to soon.
