I figured you'd be smart enough not to leave it in your car, Juggs, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know that you aren't supposed to do that.
Furthermore brand new records come warped from the factory all the time. So it could be no fault of the end user.
Juggs what kind of receiver are you using? I don't want to sound like a dick but does it have phono inputs? If you run your turntable straight into a line level input with no RIAA equalization it will sound quiet and bizarre indeed.

No, that's exactly my problem. I need a phono preamp - I thought mine had a phono input, but I was incorrect. Its not a problem, I did some research through some vinyl collecting websites and forums and found that the inexpensive preamps made/sold by phonopreamps.com are actually really good, and ordered one.
good stuff! you'll be in a state of analog bliss in no time.
getting into vinyl and really hifi in general was such a bewildering process for me. thankfully I had tons of knowledgable and friendly people on the Internet to help me out.
you know geeks and enthusiasts in general are just great people. I've been involved in various hobbies, from live music to HiFi to fountain pen collecting to cigars to PC gaming, and generally speaking the enthusiast communities around these hobbies are willing to teach newcomers for no other reason than to be a helpful part of the community.
whenever you are losing hope in the human race, remember the geeks!

Record Store Day is set to return with its Black Friday event, which marks the second year we can buy limited-edition records on the busiest shopping day of the year. This year, post-Thanksgiving shoppers can grab releases from Rolling Stones, My Morning Jacket, The Lumineers, Skrillex and The White Stripes.
The Rolling Stones are set to release their first EP on 7”, which will include “Bye Bye Johnny,” “Money,” “You’d Better Move On” and “Poison Ivy (version 2).” My Morning Jacket is set to release the It Makes No Difference live recording on 10”, which was recorded at the Newport Folk Festival Tribute to Levon Helm. The recording features Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes. The White Stripes are set to release three singles including “Hotel Yorba (Live at Hotel Yorba)” b/w “Rated X”, which is set to be pressed on opaque red vinyl. “Rated X” is a cover of a 1972 Loretta Lynn song. The Lumineers are releasing a 10” EP titled The Winter, which will follow up the band’s debut.
“Five years ago when Record Store Day helped, and guided, the re-launch of vinyl wehad no idea where it was going. Looking at this year’s wonderful vinyl offerings, youcan see just how far we’ve come. There are some real treasures in here,” said Michael Kurtz, co-founder and organizer of Record Store Day.
The event expects to announce more releases as the event gets closer, so keep checking back for more details. Black Friday falls on Nov. 23 of this year.
I must have that My Morning Jacket - It Makes no Difference. A highlight of their set.

Thanks ITM. I'm definitely going after that Link Wray 7". His stuff was made to be heard on vinyl. Maybe the most underrated guitarist of all time. Literally all time.
I pre-ordered that Grateful Dead release through Vintage Vinyl. Score.
Also, weirdly, Grizzly Bear's "Yellow House" sounds great on vinyl...but it plays at 45 rpm. I was not expecting this. I thought all LPs were 33, so imagine my surprise when I had to switch the belt position. Is there a reason for this?
I think the decision is made to best optimize the vinyl's physical space, or to selectively split up tracks/portions of the album thematically.
That Incesticide vinyl is freakin' $50! That's a buncha malarkey! I'm buying that King Diamond 12" picture disc for $15 though. I wish they had the Primus 10" and the Tomahawk 7". Druid, it looks like the color is random for that Reservoir Dogs release.
The less crammed the grooves, the better sounding the record. Especially as it gets closer to the spindle.
I do think this is an especially gorgeous sounding album. Why don't they somehow let you know beforehand that its a 45 though? And why not make more LPs at 45 if its better sounding? So many questions.
I think 33.3 became the standard because you could fit more music on one record, with minimal loss of sound quality for most users.
Having said that, just because a record is 45RPM doesn't mean it will automagically sound better. Bad mixing or mastering will ruin even the best pressed record.
An extreme example, but take for instance the Metallica Death Magnetic 5x45RPM box, which I own. The discs themselves are physically exquisite, but of course the mix is so horrible, no format can save it.
So when we are talking about vinyl weight or speed, I'll take anything, so long as its mastered and mixed well. Hell, some of the best sounding records ever pressed are 33.3 150g LPs from the 60s and 70s, nothing audiophile about them, they just come from all analog sources and the mastering engineers knew not to quack with the sound.
EDIT: I should be more clear about one thing though: assuming the mixing and mastering is excellent, yes, a 45RPM will sound better than a 33.3RPM, for the reasons described in posts above mine.

I'm pretty clueless about vinyls even though I have a bunch. I really need to educate myself more as well as look into a good turntable/sound system when I can actually save a little money.

The profit margins for the label gets tricky. Pressing vinyl at 45 costs more to begin with, plus you can fit fewer tracks on the actual record. Yellow House is an ideal candidate at 10 tracks and only ~50 minutes but longer albums where you're stretching out to 3 discs the casual vinyl buyer isn't going to buy the record.
I thought Metallica playing Voodoo was a great excuse to get out the vinyl:
Kill 'Em All (Original Pressing - Megaforce) Master of Puppets (Original Pressing - Elektra) Ride The Lightening (Original Pressing - Elektra) ...And Justice For All (Two Original Pressings - Elektra) S/T (Original Pressing - Elektra) Load (Original Pressing) Reload (Original Pressing) S&M (Two Original Pressings) Garage Inc. (Two Original Pressings) $5.98 EP (Two Original Pressings) Until It Sleeps Single (Original Pressing) Neko (Dog - Chinese Crested/Terrier Mix)
not pictured: Death Magnetic 5x45LP box not purchased: St. Anger
The Megaforce Kill 'Em All is one of my most treasured LPs. This copy is NM, very few pops n clicks. Fantastic sound!

Picked up OFF!'s new self-titled release today, and traded with my friend for an original press of Weezer's Pinkerton and the Nirvana Nevermind Singles Box Set from Black Friday RSD last year.
Okay, so...I want to buy a record player. I have a hilariously old one that my father gave me, and it does a fine enough job, but it's old and shit is starting to fall off of it.
I leave it to you, inforoo, tell me what to buy. I can spend a fair amount of money on this (would want to get new speakers as well) and all suggestions are welcome. And since I'm likely moving to a new apartment in a month I'd like to get this squared away before then.
This was also spurred by my dad basically saying I could have all his old vinyl stuff which dates back to the early 60s.

This is pretty much an exact duplicate of a post I made like 6 months ago.
But a Rega RP-1. Will run you about $450, but it's a great set up and I love mine. Check online for deals - there are some places that will throw in albums when you purchase. I forget where it was (I posted it a few pages back thouhg), but there was one website where they'd also send you two MOFI LPs (some of which run around $40) when you purchased the RP-1.
Check your amplifier/receiver, and make sure it has phono inputs, or a built in preamp, otherwise you'll need to buy a preamp as well. I got mine for like $45 and it works great.
What kind of speakers do you have? What are you looking to get?
Thanks dude, very helpful (and I'll scroll back to look for your other post). My current speakers are just some old shitty ones that came with the player, but I'm looking to get some nice speakers, nothing too crazy but big enough that you'd hear them over 10-15 people drunk talking each other at a little get together.
Basically, assume I'm buying an entire new set-up and retiring my current one to the same shed that Old Yeller retired to.

I second the RP-1. Rega is great for a simple but quality plug and play solution. The cart it comes with isn't the greatest but you can upgrade it down the road. My desktop system is all rega and I love it.
There are tons of great speakers out there. What size room will your system be in? Is it dedicated audio or part of a home theater? Would you rather have stand mounts or floor standers?

Thought it was pretty cool. If I was a more Jack White-obsessed fan I'd consider ordering it but I can't afford an album that I already have right at this moment. Still....I love that he is helping keep Vinyl alive with unique releases.
Anyway.....I'm dying for new vinyl. I have a few things that I ordered what feels like years ago that I'm waiting on. Avett Brothers new album (yea they're cheesy...whatever), the latest Third Man Record's Vault Release (with an LP of the White Stripes first full show ever and a 7" single of the White Stipes first live performance), and then there's the Daytrotter Vinyl pressing of two sessions - one being a Delta Spirit session and the other being a Doc Watson (RIP) recording.
I have three different purchases that are all taking their sweet ass time getting to me and even though I feel like I'm a pretty patient guy I'm starting to get that itch. I need something new lol.
UPDATE: I still have not received any of these orders. So annoyed.
Melvins - Freak Puke (Bought one at both of the shows I went to in hopes of getting the Skinner art, but I ended up getting McPherson and D. Cooper art)
Melvins - Sugar Daddy split series 5
Melvins - Sugar Daddy split series 6
Tweak Bird - Undercover Crops
Tweak Bird - Tweak Bird LP
Animal Collective - Centipede Hz
David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love This Giant
Tame Impala - Lonerism
Grizzly Bear - Shields
Skinny Puppy - Live: Bootlegged, Broke And In Solvent Seas
Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax II: Future Sequence
And I should be getting this in the mail next week: The Sword - Apocryphon - Super hetti glow in the dark vinyl bundle www.indiemerchstore.com/item/16168/

I've noticed the same wobble in my Rega when viewing it from the couch. I haven't noticed any negative effects on the sound, so I just assumed it was common.
