I would be really excited for Ween if they were there.
They were practically the whole reason I went to my first Bonnaroo. It bothered me that they were in a tent, they should have had The Which Stage. People were lined up twice the length of that tent. I suffered through Fountains of Wayne to get 3rd row at Ween.

I've been into Snoop and the Beastie Boys for a while, but now after getting more into Phish and watchin them on bonnaroo365 I'm defintiely most excited for Phish

For an idea of how much this festival has grown, I saw my first Ween show on the WHAT stage in 2002.
Phish, NIN, Bestie Boys, David Byrne, and TMV. Cant forget about Toubab Krewe... I saw their 2006 Bonnaroo set on Thursday night and it was amazing. I had never even heard of them before and now I am excited to see them again. I hope they play Thursday night again... that would be a great way to start the weekend.

I'm sad I missed it. Ween is awesome, indeed. They should come back! (And Tool and The Flaming Lips)!!!
Too many to pick just one, but now that the schedule's come out, top of my list is: Wilco, Band Of Horses, NIN, Bruce, Bon Iver, Crystal Castles, Beasties, TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Animal Collective, Janelle Monae, Passion Pit
Bought the ticket because of Phish, hands down. But I'm stoked to see Rod y Gab, Bruce, & Wilco.... And I think Citizen Cope & Kaki King are real sleepers in this lineup too.
(I know people are gonna get mad at me for this, but hey, to each his own, this is just my opinion....)
I can appreciate jam bands live, I saw Phil Lesh last year, then The Allman Brothers, and I'm sure I'll stop by Phish for a couple hours, but seriously man... hippie music sucks listening to it at home, I'm sorry... It's just so close to country, and I HATE country. I tried SO hard to get into The Dead, especially when I worked for these old hippie guys that were obsessed with it, but I just couldn't. I just don't see how it's hippie-ish or trippy to be twangy...
I mean, AWESOME lyrics, I'll give 'em that, and the shows are great, too. Last year, Phil Lesh was one of the most memorable shows... you don't see crazier people anywhere else, but the music... ehhhh.
Anyways, it doesn't surprise me too much that Phish is winning this poll, I just didn't think it'd be ahead THIS much.

No getting mad at all... it's your opinion, and I dig that. But by your own admission, jam bands are great live so it doesn't have much to do with listening to anything at home. The poll is all about who are you most psyched to see live? Doesn't surprise me that Phish is winning in a landslide. Add that to the fact that at least half of this festival probably bought the tickets because of Phish in the first place, and to me it's a gimme.
And frankly before I get yelled at, I'm stoked for NIN, Beasties, Snoop, Girl Talk & Ani. And Phish. But the great thing about 'Roo is that it's such a diverse set of bands that there's not just something for everyone, there's *A LOT* for everyone....

You are obviously entitled to your opinions, but here are a few suggestions... Don't think that Phish equals the Dead. Totally different music. Don't think of it as hippie music. I'm far from a hippie. I listen to mostly electronic music and think most jambands suck. Phish is far superior than "hippie music." Do yourself a favor and watch their sets. They are sure to impress.
Obviously I'm most excited for Phish. Other than Phish I'm super pumped for Midnite, David Byrne and Erykah Badu.

Really.....twangy? I despise country music but I listen to mostly jam band material, especially at home. Especially Phish. The way the music is composed is amazing. It translates into orchestra music easily. In fact, Trey conducted an orchestra in 2004 during the first set. It was amazing.
I admit that I can't really get into the Dead either. I do, however, loooove Dead covers for some reason. Especially when Keller plays em. Ahhh I need me a little Keller, it's been awhile.
I don't classify anything as "hippie" music though. Music falls into two categories for me....good or bad.

I feel like this is the one item that many current fans don't want to talk about but many privately admit to be true, and frankly I'm one of them. I mean, I like the Grateful Dead enough, but they were never my favorite. And all the random incarnations of the Grateful Dead versions over the past almost 15 years (read Ratdog, Phil & Friends, The Dead, etc) are a bit overdone and overrated. Hell, Dark Star Orchestra has made a career out of it.... I mean, don't get me wrong, I have gone to these shows plenty too, but it just feels really played out to me and dare I say inauthentic. And it really always seems to be the giant elephant in the room that everyone kinda feels but nobody actually wants to acknowledge....
Please don't kill me for this, folks... I do miss Jerry. A lot.
I think Garcia is brilliant, but as I get older (which doesn't say much since I'm only 21) I have found that I like the Grateful Dead less and less. Its funny though because Jerry remains one of my favorite singers and guitarists and Phil remains one of my favorite bassists. I think the sum is lesser than its parts. The Dead tend to get wayyyyy tooo noodly for me. Phish don't noodle.
As a Dead fan who believes that their body of work stands up to that of any other rock band, I will definitely agree that the modern incarnations of the Dead don't come close to the original. However, they do often feature musicians with more range and technical skill that the original Dead members had. While they can't capture what Jerry had, they do bring new life to music that has touched the hearts of people across a wide range of ages and backgrounds for over four decades.
As far as criticizing them for being twangy, the Dead, particularly Jerry, had roots in country-blues music that goes back to Rev. Gary Davis, the Memphis Jug Band and Appalachian string band music. Jerry played mostly banjo in several bands before the Dead formed. So that influence comes through in a lot of their songs. However, their more psychedelic work from the late 60s, their funky work from the late 70s/early 80s and many other great eras show them transcending these influences and creating something truly unique.
I'll never understand the statement that Phish is twangy though. I mean, Mike does love to write country and bluegrass songs, but the way Phish plays them is not really twangy.
In general, though, I have found that when you see a lot of hippies congregating, especially if they're brewing beer, there tends to be a lot of bluegrass played. I love it, but it's not for everyone.
I guess you could say that Phish noodles, but its a totally different type of noodling than occurs with tGD.
The Dead's noodling lacks backbone a lot of the time. To be cliche, it gets too hippity dippity at times for me. Not trying to discredit the band, I love so much about them, but thats my opinion. Too all over the place and a lot of the tones used are not "edgy" enough for me if you get what I'm saying.
You almost have to define noodling, and I think it is also kind of a subjective thing depending on how well you actually know the band's body of work. I'm more of a Phish fan, so I'll use something like You Enjoy Myself as an example.... if you were a noob and didn't really know better, you might think that a 30 minute YEM was just the band noodling like it was their full time job. But if you really know the band, you can actually appreciate that it is entirely compositional. A 30 minute YEM actually sticks relatively closely to the actual sonic constructs that are defined in the studio version. There's experimentation, and the piece actually allows and encourages that, but truly only at specific points in the piece... it's not all THAT random. The same is true of almost everything that Phish does.... you can run it right down. Harry Hood, Antelope, PYITE, Slave to The Traffic Light, Bathtub Gin.... even something like Sanity.
I've been listening to the Dead for years too, but never with the same fervor or dedication that I have had (in my younger years) to devouring the entire catalog. Thus, I admittedly can't really listen to a Dead (or Ratdog, DSO, or whatever) set with the same somewhat educated opinion. Maybe somebody else here can speak to that... I'd actually be really interested in what you have to say on it!

Well, I've never seen the Grateful Dead, but I have seen the Dead at Deer Creek and was ready to leave after the 1st set. I stuck it out, but I should have left. It was very subpar, even by the standards of the true deadheads that I was with. Personally, I am very happy that they are at Roth and not Roo.
