Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
No doubt, but most of it's neighbors just to the north wouldn't have guessed it.
Seriously though, you might want to stay away from the mushroom and psychedelic newsgroups on Usenet, because you seem to have trouble remembering the subjects of your previous posts.
No trouble remembering at all. A lot of people may have had trouble understanding my intentions; the impact of the flu situation on this year's Bonnaroo, inclusive of all or no effects. Nil effect is just as valid as major effect for purposes of discussion.
Sveral school systems announced closings today in the Washington, D.C. and surrounding school systems. George Washington University in D.C. has 2 students that have the flu, don't know if it is H1N1. I'm interested to see what the University does, since you mentioned universities in a previous post. Intense; The Blacklight Room is on the XM Radio broadcast on DirectTV. They're playing the Doors, "This Is The End."
A lot of people think in extremes, which I guess is an efficient way of pruning the thought process. Actually, I see the world as an endless spectrum of possibilities. Discussion in this thread has focussed on the extremely small possibility that Roo might get canceled. I tried to bring up many other possibilities, but somehow got pigeonholed as a Debby Downer alarmist. The perils of efficient thinking.
Psychedelic newsgroup discussion has seen better times. They were quite active during the age of "research druqs," almost a decade ago. Actually, if you want to fudge your memory try Datura, and the anticholinergics, which sees some discussion in the psychedelic newsgroups. I've had some experience with Datura, a plant mentioned in Castaneda's "Teachings of Don Juan." Datura causes temporary but profound short-term memory loss, and *concrete* hallucinations. I don't recommend it.
I'm most active on alt.nature.mushrooms, a.n.m, the only group in the alt.nature hierarchy. Discussion can include magic mushrooms, as stated in the charter, but focuses mostly on wild edibles. Magic mushroom cultivation is better and more properly discussed in alt.drugs.mushrooms. I don't hang out there much.
There are several mushrooms that are both good edibles and have unusual psychological effects. Laetiporus has a taste and texture similat to chicken, but contains phenylethylamines similar to mescaline in structure, but different in effect. I had the unique experience of having several trains of thought simultaneously. Wierd stuff, and tasty. But, you've gotta know what you're doing with wild mushrooms. Wait, weren't we talking about flu?
I don't like Oasis but they get some points in my book now.
Oasis stayed locked in their hotel rooms after performing in Caracas, Venezuela, terrified of contracting swine flu.
Or, at least, their management were. Singer Liam Gallagher was indifferent to the threat of the killer bug. He spent his time posting Tweets mocking his management's caution.
"In Caracas, top gig, sat in me room in silence as my TV doesn't work, not allowed to leave the hotel for fear of being tickled to death," he wrote.
He also took the opportunity to take a swipe at his brother Noel who recently said the band would not record another record for five years because Liam was so unpleasant to deal with.
"It won't be a five-year break if I've got anything to do with it," said Liam menacingly.
If someone takes different positions on a topic, it doesn't usually mean they are forgetting previous positions. I'm not arguing a fixed opinion, I'm trying to discuss various scenarios.
In the real world at this time, we see various responses to the flu situation. Among the responses, the U.S. President is telling people to wash their hands and call their doctor if they feel sick, and he's implemented national plans for dealing with pandemic flu. Schools have closed as well as some school systems, in areas where there have been only a few cases of flu. Most confirmed cases in the U.S. have been mild, with recovery unevetful. Almost everybody agrees media coverage was initially overblown, but is tailoring back now.
"What will be the impact on Bonnaroo?" was my original question. The majority of responses accused me of being alarmist, or irritating or being a downer. Perhaps they were associating my question with the media hype. Or, maybe I'm being oversensitive.
But, the question remains. I expect there has been discussion between the festival organizers and the Tennessee Dept. of Health regarding the current flu situation and this year's festival. We know Bonnaroo is given specific mention in the state's flu plan, and the federal government has asked states review their flu plans. That's an impact. Hopefully, that will be the extent of it.
An additional consideration related to Bonnaroo - It is characterized as a "discretionary" large public gathering. People go there because they very much want to go there. Plans are made a year ahead of time, including investments of time and money. There is tremendous incentive for people to attend.
If government and health authorities recommend you stay home after becoming ill with this flu, in all likelihood people will ignore this when it comes to Bonnaroo. I suspect Tennessee health officials are consulting with the CDC in Atlanta about this very situation. Can we assume that some of the CDC employees in Atlanta have been to Bonnaroo as festival attendees, given the close proximity of the Center? Do they excuse themselves from consulting because of a conflict of interest? Or, are they included as expert witnesses?

We went over this yesterday the "worst case" scenario is 1700 cases by the time Bonnaroo roles around. So it does not make sense to keep on expecting it to have an effect on Bonnaroo. They are not going to cancel a large outdoor gathering because 1700 people have a mild flu
I don't like Oasis but they get some points in my book now.
Oasis stayed locked in their hotel rooms after performing in Caracas, Venezuela, terrified of contracting Miss Piggy flu.
Or, at least, their management were. Singer Liam Gallagher was indifferent to the threat of the killer bug. He spent his time posting Tweets mocking his management's caution.

I'll assume this story is true. Band management concerns... Didn't think of that. If Oasis was a headliner at Roo and ordered by management to stay in their bus after performing, that'd be a minor effect. If they were a headliner and canceled, that'd still be relatively minor. If they were an unopposed headliner and canceled, and opened up 3 hrs of extra performances on all stages, that'd be a major *positive* impact.

Doesn't mean anyone from Atlanta will be carrying the virus, but we will have people attending from an area of infection. This is based on projections that you sited, so I used them. As of this date, May 2, there are no cases in Atlanta, except for a case from Kentucky transferred to a hospital in Atlanta.

I've been interested about why the moderators filtered the original title of this thread. I questioned the name change, but never got an answer. I will assume it is a response to complaints by hog farmers, perhaps those located in Tennessee, that the name, commonly used by media, government and health authorities, has hurt business. Here's the story after passing through the sausage grinder:
Farmers Worried Name Of Virus Hurt Business
Posted: May 1, 2009 09:02 PM
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The H1N1 virus was first called the Swine Flu, and that name took a toll on farmers. Hog prices are down and Tennessee's pork producers are worried.
The so called swine flu hit hog farmers like John Batey where it hurts most, in the pocketbook.
"You lose money because you're already losing from last year with the high price of feed, corn and everything went up. Gas went up," said Batey.
Hog prices usually hit a peak during the summer, but farmers feared they are falling because of the negative news surrounding the name of the flu.
"The media is calling it swine flu instead of the H1N1 virus," said Batey.
The medical community became sensitive to farmers and stopped calling the virus the swine flu.
The H1N1 flu contains pieces of swine, bird and human flu. The Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control said people can not get the flu by eating pork and pigs are safe to be around.
"It has nothing to do with swine. You can eat all the meat you want," said Batey.
Batey said it was all about public perception, and he was afraid the damage had been done.
"It was tagged on early and it's hard to change that. It's attached," said Batey.
One farmer predicted if hog prices stay where they are this week, up to a quarter of the state's pork producers may end up leaving the business.
On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, pork futures rose slightly on Friday.

Actually inforoo is funded by the Tennessee pork mafia, that why we do not have pop up adds. Or it could be that our moderators have a sense of humor.

Nor do they feel the need to offer explanations, either humorous or polite. Do the mods filter for humorous effect only? I understand filtering expletives humorously. I even understand filtering to satisfy the wishes of state pork producers. (Though, this seems like infringement of free speech.) But, filtering for humor only?
Also, YOU seem to be the one having a lengthy drukq discussion here when you know that's not allowed (read the rules) not to mention the fact that there are none of those at Bonnaroo anyway!
Actually ri free speech doesnt not cover private boards free speech only protects government intrusion.. And filtering for humor purpose is an appropriate way pointing out your ridiculous paranoia in perspective of how serous we should take it.

Yeah, I apologize for the drukq slip. Kinda got baited into that. Forgot to say, I avoid the corn newsgroups, and have never mentioned it on this board until now. I use a very broad definition of psychedelic, and consider it applicable to music, literature, an historical period and culture in general. And, my interest in mushrooms is primarily culinary; morels, chanterelles, porcini, maitake, oysters, etc., etc. I find all these in the forest around my home. Most around here understand any mention of 'shrooms as referring to the magic type, so I ran with it. I should've exercised better judgment.
Still, why did the mods filter the original title? If it was just to be funny, well, ok, but that seems at odds to their usual reasons for filtering. If they are "catering" to the wishes of pork farmers, then that's a little more interesting, especially when it is applied to a matter of public health.

From what you've said, you live around some really cool nature. So then why the hell are you on the board constantly talking about why or why we shouldn't be talking about a mild case of flu? If I lived where you live instead of a suburb with little to no character, I would be in a much better mood.

I understand restrictions on free speech. Do you speak for the mods? What am I paranoid about?
I'm neither afraid of getting seriously ill from this flu nor fearful of cancellation. I even think it may be beneficial to catch this flu at a stage when it isn't particularly harmful. This aspect was pointed out in a CDC news conference just this morning, and they are studying it.

Best guess? I have too much time to think. Man, I'd love to be kayaking now. But, I wrecked my roof racks when I totaled my Beetle. The morels are up now. I should be filling my basket instead of unintentionally pissing people off on this board.
i'll be selling super heady face masks all weekend if anyone wants to buy one. one for $3, two for $5. they're ultra crunchy organic. don't skip out! also, for the more enthusiastic swine flu festival goer i will be, for a limited time only, offering swine flu insurance. it's $150 but it covers death. if you die of swine flu over the course of the weekend i'll refund your money in it's entirety. hit me up if your interested.

CALGARY- The Alberta government did not inform Tennessee officials that a Calgary woman was confirmed to have a mild bout of H1N1 (swine) flu after travelling to that Southern U.S. state, its health department said Friday.
There have been no confirmed H1N1 cases among Tennesseans, although there are three private-school students in the Nashville and Memphis areas with “probable” awaiting confirmation tests from the federal Centers for Disease Control.
Alberta health officials would not say where in Tennessee the Calgary adult female had travelled. Nor did they apparently let state authorities know about her case.
“To the best of our knowledge, there is no record of receiving information on this case,” said Andrea Turner, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Health.
This eighth Albertan with the flu strain, announced Friday, was the first who had not visited Mexico, where the disease originated and has been deadly.
Given that British Columbia and Nova Scotia have reported people catching flu from fellow Canadians, Alberta should expect the same here in coming days and weeks, said Andre Corriveau, the provincial chief medical officer health.
“It’s telling us that the virus is spreading like other influenza viruses,” he told a daily news briefing.
Corriveau referred to the woman infected after her Tennessee visit a “first-generation case,” suggesting she contracted the flu down south.
Proper protocol suggests the Alberta epidemiologists should have contacted Tennessee authorities to share information, said Colleen Conway-Welch, dean of nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
“They want to have proper surveillance and they want to see the pattern of the disease,” she said in an interview. “And they begin to look at either particular pockets or some kind of prevalence.”
The children suspected to have swine flu in Tennessee had not visited Mexico, either. But somebody from Mexico must have spread the disease in the state, and there are likely other Tennesseeans unwittingly carrying the strain, said Dr. Glen Armstrong, head of University of Calgary’s department of microbiology and infectious diseases.
He said it’s likely immaterial that there was no contact between provincial and state officials, in part because everybody in North America is already on the alert for the globally spreading ailment. He said it would depend on authorities’ reporting guidelines.

No I dont speak for mods and you said infringement on free speech and there is a difference between free speech and editing. . Okay maybe not paranoia but unhealthy obsessive behavior...
And Illyb does that insurance cover the cost of adult diapers in case of swine flue diarrhea? Maybe we should email bonnaroo and make sure they sale them...or maybe someone could put them on shakedown street. I MEAN shouldn't this be part of the Tennessee pandemic bonnaroo swine flu plan. 80000 people with diarrhea

I said "seems" like infringement on free speech, because no reason for the filtering was given by the mods. I could easily assume they were trying to be cognizant of the pork industry in Tennessee (censorship), or assume they were being humorous. Or both.
Yeah, maybe I'm being obsessive, but hopefully not to an unhealthy degree. It's just that Bonnaroo is huge business. The politics involved are unimaginable to most of us. How does a business with tremendous exposure to a flu pandemic event handle itself?
Now, this, in all likelihood, may not be an event that reaches a crisis level. But, it will be instructive. A truly dangerous flu pandemic is not beyond the realm of imagination. Sure, this one isn't it. But, government will look back on it as a test run.
You know Arlen Spector was on the Commission that investigated the JFK assassination. That Explains why he went "back, and to the left"
Yeah, he worked for the Warren Commission. I knew the secretary for Chief Justice Earl Warren. Her boyfriend had a cabin in Loudoun Co., Virginia, where we'd all go for weekends in the summer. They cooked on a woodstove in the kitchen. Grease and soot covered the ceiling. During the Viet Nam War, someone took their fingers and smeared a big peace sign in the dirty ceiling; "peace in the grease," we called it. They were pretty liberal as I recall, which was normal for the times.
Her boyfriend had been in the U.S. Army, and had gone into Germany at the end of the war. We used to sleep under a quilt on the iron bed in the middle room of the cabin. I never noticed 'til they showed me, the quilt was sewn onto a NAZI flag brought back from Germany. We were sleeping under a NAZI flag, and never noticed!

Riburroo, I don't really agree with some of the stances you've taken, but I appreciate the healthy amount of discussion you've created with this thread. Controversy tends to spark the most debate, and though I don't really agree with you I've enjoyed this thread and the points/counter points that have been raised. +crunchy just for sticking by your guns and keeping a discussion going.

Appreciated. See y'all on the farm. I'm gonna try to kick back for a while, unless things get strange.

What concerns me is the over-reaction of the national, state, local govts, and media, its a fear campaign run 24/7, everybody on this board agrees that this flu is bunk and of not really any concern to us we just laugh at it but what I see is a massive over reaction by the people in control of our freedoms and govt's, this is the same govt's that will destroy your life for consuming corn and won't give it a simple debate when everybody on this board can agree and a majority of this country can agree there is absolutely nothing criminal about consuming corn or ingesting any corn like substance in your body, there might be a spiritual or social problem but absolutely no criminal problem but for decades they will never allow a simple debate on the subject. When Obama had his internet open house debate last month the #1 question the most people wanted an answer to and voted on to ask was should we legalize corn and tax it to help govt funding, and his response outright laughter at such a ridiculous question, there was nothing ridiculous about the question considering he openly admitted to using corn in the past and liked it. They are the ones in control of making the big decisions and they have an agenda, one of those decisions could be to cancel big outdoor gatherings for long periods of time because of risk to our safety. When every bonnaroo goer would openly agree there is no risk to our safety and would risk our safety without hesitation so we could enjoy roo as we do every year. It still wouldnt matter because they can make the decision to cancel it and it is an event that just can't be rescheduled. I know AC Superfy will do everything they can from that ever being the case or letting that happen but the power is not in there hands its in peoples hands I don't trust and flat out lie to you whenever they open there mouth about anything and everything including this miss piggy flu. They don't use reason, rationality, or logical thinking, they use force because they can and they know we won't do anything about it but complain on a forum. So I hope that 40 days from now we are all enjoying what we look forward to all year but I fear the people in control will do whatever they want to which is what they have done without any recourse or second thought.
