episodes like this make me think we are extremely underestimating skyler's role in the ending of everything (and what i believe will be walt's ultimate downfall).
i also think jesse pinkman keeps getting better and better. i really love when they let his character shine and have a breakthrough smart moment or a time when you can really see him caring about others.
Another great episode that marks us halfway through this year's "half-season". I'm hoping things pick up a bit in the next two episodes that allow us a great final two episodes before the year long wait for the real finale.
Also- I think it's been mentioned in this thread before, but how come every time Hank gets close to the Blue Meth, (or Heisenberg)- the El Paso job suddenly opens up again? Really makes me think there is something going on with the Cartel and the Albuquerque PD. Especially with Hank's boss going on that little spiel about Gus being 'right under his nose' at his cookout, in his home. Almost seems kinda....I don't know... fake. Just wonderin'.

I didn't think that guy was offering Hank the El Paso job again. I thought he was asking Hank to run the Albuquerque office because he was going back to El Paso?

that could very well be it. sometimes these things i misunderstand them
This is why I love television, I can flip my morality on it's head for an hour a week and hate Skylar and love Walt. Yes the Walt/Skylar bedroom scenes are ultra creepy but I can't help it: I hate Skylar. Should we even be calling him Walt any more? He is clearly full blown Heisenberg.
New episode was so boring but holy cow it was amazing. So sad the season is already halfway over. Really can't wait to see where it goes in the next 4 seasons. I feel like the most recent episode was the "calm before the storm" so to speak. Not that it was calm really, it was actually the most tense episode of the season I think, it was all about character development.
Is Walt going to poison Skyler by putting the ricin in her cigarette? Is she smoking to try and bring his cancer back? Was the floss around the finger foreshadowing that maybe she hangs herself or he hangs her? Vince said that this season Walt does something that is absolutely unforgivable, could harming Skyler be it?
Edit: Oh yeah the Jesse buying Walt a gift thing was so damn sad. Jesse really cares about Walt and Walt could care less these days.

Agreed. Jesse seemed to honestly want to give him a gift that he liked (he included the receipt just in case he didn't like it). Walt just used it to try to leverage Skyler.
Second, Walt: "What are you waiting for?" Skyler: "For the cancer to come back." Me: "Fuuuuuuck. That is harsh."
Lastly, I agree that I think this was the last of the building episodes for this season. Things look like they jump off next episode.

Spoiler just because it plays off Banshee's vague spoiler from a Gilligan interview.
Like EAP mentioned, I wonder if a lot of people have got it backwards. If Walt is going to do something "unforgiveable", I see it being something that happens to Jesse not Skyler. 1) Jesse has been trying to get so close with Walt (i.e. inviting him for dinner, buying him the watch) whereas Walt's relationship with Skyler has become increasingly confrontational and distant. There's no tragedy in causing the death of an enemy. Tragedy comes from hurting someone who loves you. 2) Everyone loves Jesse (as they should). Lots of people hate Skyler and have for a long time. People are going to care more if Jesse dies. Now whether this comes from Walt's direct action or by his inaction remains to be seen. Also, going back to the flash forward, if there is anyone that would be helping Walt get revenge, it would be Jesse. Something has to happen to him between now and the flash forward to keep him from being there.
Back to spoiler-free territory, I was watching that video recap that ITM posted before the fifth season again. Near the beginning, Walt's voiceover says that the best prognosis with chemo is 2 years. With the reminder from this week's episode, we know that 2 years from his diagnosis is the day after his 52nd birthday which is right along the lines of when the flash forward takes place.
Once again, i forgot to watch BB on sunday night - Damn you, Olympics and your shiny gymnasts!
Anyhow, caught up last night. A. Ma. Zing. The foreshadowing of Walt just going over the edge is even beyond foreshadowing at this point. They're just coming out and SHOWING us that he's losin' it. I mean, my mouth was hanging open before the opening credits even came on. When he pulled up in the driveway with HIS car... WHAT? and then when he and Jr. pulled up with BOTH cars??? I said, FFFFFFFFFF.
I think Im with EAP on Skylar as a large part of what will be Walt's downfall. All episodes since she saw what she did (or helped do) to Ted, she has been like an abused, caged animal. And after this episode, I feel confident she is going to do exactly what abused, caged animals do - the MOMENT they have a window of escape, they take it. Come hell or high water, they will bite/claw/scratch/maim/maul to get the F out. And she proved it last night - she has a plan. ...albeit a pretty shoddy one, she's not so broken that she can't think of a way out... At this point - I think Skylar's storyline will be one of 2 things: 1) escape 2) death by walter.
And finally, Jesse rules. I <3 him so much. And I dont want him to die.

Yeah, something horrible is going to happen, followed by me needing to buy a new TV. Every episode has this big ominous feeling hanging over it. After "Magnets, b*tch!" I don't know if I've even laughed watching this season. Sh*t is going to hit the fan soon, I just have no idea who the fan is going to be pointed at yet.
Skyler has more than the instinct of an abused, caged animal. Her mama bear instincts have kicked in which should be infinitely more terrifying for Walt. I think her breakthrough last night was that she no longer cares about herself. She just wants to protect the kids.

Yeah, she's losing it, Walt thinks he's invincible, Jesse is trying to be the good guy, Mike is Mike, and Hank is swirling around all of them.
I watched it last night (was at the beach all weekend), and when
Skylar was staring at the pool and her mouth opened slightly I thought she was going to spill the beans about Walt's secret life to Hank. She is now almost as reckless as Walt in some regards. I also think she's the only one who can really stop Walt, if it comes to that. For all the sociopathic behavior Walt is prone to, I just can't see him hurting his family, even his lunatic wife who is threatening to bring down the whole house of cards with her recent behavior and is even threatening to take the kids away.

I thought that too! Mama Bear in full effect - BUT - she was strong at the beginning of that argument, and then she just withered, dude! Withered! Walt is riding so high on his power trip that while he ShOULD be scared of what Skylar is capable of, he is not. I think that's where he is going to fail - he's not paying attention to her in the way he should. Caged animal, Mama bear - either way, Skylar is gonna make a big move. Whether it gets her killed or not is the question.

To add on to Walt thinking he is invincible, Hank getting that promotion made me think about how Walt has been lucky from the DEA end of things. Hank looks so close to figuring the whole thing out, but he feels he has to accept the promotion (he didn't look happy about it). They made a point to say that he would have to give up the Fring case which will mean whoever takes it over (even Gomez) will not be as determined to really look into it.
A popular theory (not from any source I don't think, just talk in the comments on reddit) is that Walt is going to kill Skyler. A week ago, I thought, "That's total bullshit. Even though he's become somewhat evil and selfish, he still does care about his family." However, it's occurred to me that Skyler isn't family to Walt anymore. I don't know if it was because she f*cked ted, or if it happened when she gave ted his money and walt lost it in the crawl space, but when he talks about his "family," he is talking about his kids. Skyler, to him, is just someone he has to put up with in order to see his children, which to me it looks like are the last people he cares about.
That conversation between Walt and Sky, well that was kind of the point of no return. He basically explained to her that she's stuck right where she is, no matter what, and she said she's just waiting for him to die. After all this trouble she's going to to keep her kids away from Walt, I highly doubt she's going to kill herself and leave the kids alone with Walt. However, I think that their clash will come to a head before the end of the season. She is going to keep trying to keep the kids away, and he will eventually, in true Heisenberg fashion, start to look at her as the enemy.
My prediction is that, finally frustrated with Walt and realizing that she'd rather her children be alive and know the truth about walt than be dead and not know, she's going to say enough, and go to (or try to go to) the DEA/police. Either before, or after, she'll be killed by Walt. It has to be him. I think it sets up perfectly the long stretch of time that we're presumably not going to see between two seasons. I think it'll be out of passion, not premeditated. He'll just be so mad that he loses his shit, and then possibly uses Saul's vacuum guy to disappear to New Hampshire.
Also does Phil watch this show? I feel like he'd be all over this thread about Knife Party being on the cold open this week if he did. I was kind of sad but I did feel like that open was fun and silly, which can be much-needed in a show like this that is literally stressful to watch.

Jesse finds out about the ricin and that Walt has played him for a fool by using his overly-emotional behavior to Walt's advantage. Jesse flips out and kills Walt, or tries to and Walt kills him.
Walt and Mike reach a point where there is no "turning back" possible and one of them has to go. Jesse is the glue that keeps this shaky truce together, and he'll be left choosing a side and shifting the balance of power.
Skylar breaks down and tells Hank. Walt has to either disappear, kill Hank, kill Skylar , or kill himself.
Hank finds out the truth organically somehow, confronts Walt and then Walt kills him, or Hank lets Walt off with a pass if he ceases his production.
The reality will be something we probably don't see coming, so everything I just said likely won't happen.
I keep racking my brain trying to think back to earlier seasons for any clues as to where this runaway train is headed, but keep coming up empty. I just can't see Walt killing Skyler out of cold blood, I still think he cares for her, but the kids thing is probably enough to cause Walt to lose his sh*t.
I really wouldn't be upset if Skyler was killed, though. I normally like the type of role her character plays, but I just haven't been able to like her character for a long time.

I think Skyler gets sick and dies. Then we find out Walt poisoned her with ricin.
Something major is going to happen in the next episode. I can feel it. I think it's more likely that Walt kills Mike very soon (even without telling Jesse in advance or getting his graces to do it). To me, he was CLEARLY talking about Mike when he suggested that Victor "flew too close to the sun and got his throat cut." To me, Walt was pretty clearly suggesting that he may kill Mike for "flying too close to the sun" by taking their money to "make his guys whole" (which, from the viewers' perspective is more or less the right thing to do--further evidence that Walt is indeed the bad guy at this point). I would not be surprised if Mike is donezo as soon as the next episode. Which could ramp up the Fring investigation (whether it's headed by Hank or Gomez) and could result in a meltdown from Jesse, who I think genuinely likes Mike.
I don't think you have to spoiler things that are just your theories but you guys post however you want
Well, since I don't know proper spoiler protocol I'm just throwing stuff in this thread in a spoiler tab if they can hint at stuff that's happened.
Yea, it's the nice thing to do. But at this point I feel like if you aren't caught up then you shouldn't be reading the posts in this thread. But again....you guys post spoilers if you feel it's necessary
I could see Mike killing Jesse and/or Skylar + others in a clean up job after Hank and the DEA begin to close in on their operation. Walt goes on the run from the DEA while getting prepared for a final stand against Mike and his guys. Rewatched the opening sequence and noticed the emphasis they put on the "Live Free or Die" (also title of the episode) motto on the tag when Walt goes to open the trunk. His clothing/appearance is very haggard so it looks as if he's living on the run from someone or something.
Have a feeling it could end up like the airplane crash flashback and have a completely different outcome than anyone was thinking.

They also had the mechanic in the last episode say "Can't beat free" or something like that in regards to the insurance covering the car damage.
Something "free" may be a big deal at some point this season.
