My experience at Roo last year was great, nobody really bothered me or anything. Most of the frat boy looking type that I talked too were actually pretty nice and cool. The only bad thing I saw was in the pit for Plant/Krauss some older woman was screaming and cussing at this girl because she wouldnt give up her spot on the rail for her. She must have been on something but that was the only bad thing I saw last year.
Generally im really good at just brushing off bad behavior at a show, if people are being obnoxious I will usually just try to move away. I think the most important thing is not to focus on that type of thing or let it ruin your show, just brush it off and move away.
I'm actually in a frat and I can say that not all of us are like that. Its the ones who don't know how to act in public that give us all a bad name.
Yeah I was in a frat in college too, and there are lots of frats, such as mine, that are all just really chill, laid back dudes. Of course there are some frats that are full of d-bags that love to get wasted and start fights. I think it's the guys that are all about showing off their letters and who think being in a frat gives you license to act "bad ass" b/c they've seen Animal House a few too many times...those are the ones that totally ruin our image.
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.
The worst scene I've been at in a long time was at an Avenged Sevenfold concert w/ Buckcherry and Papa Roach. I was only there because my daughter is into Emo music. I was lucky to get out of there without serious bodily injury. My daughter insisted on being in the front row center stage. First we were pushed from the left, then the right, then the mosh pit broke out, and when A7X came out the entire Civic Center surged forward crushing the people in the front (myself included) against the barricades. Then two guys commenced to beating each other's brains out right next to me.
I can't wait to be at Phish.
Are you from Columbus? They came here, but its not my thing.

just like many people have said already, every crowd has a$$holes. i really cannot stand generalizations. i remember when i went to see the deftones at the family values tour, i have short hair and don't dress in all black i guess, and this guy was like what the f*ck is he doing here? i didn't know that you had to dress a certain way to enjoy certain kinds of music. If someone is being disruptive at a show, then i just try to ignore them, if it gets too out of hand then i will say something to them.

Surprisingly enough, in all my experiences of seeing shows in New York City, I don't think I've ever had to deal with anyone being an jerkstore or otherwise disruptive. My only remotely bad experience anywhere was when some dude who was tripping nuts tried to drag my buddy down the hill at All Good while yelling nonsense about the gov't. I'm not exactly sure how anyone can go see a band he or she likes and not just be in too great of a mood to be a d*ck to other people.

Sigma Chi at my school did elephant walks...and ass funnels. I can't decide which one's worse.
I was in Sigma Chi at college. Never did we do anything even remotely like that. Not that you were implying that all Sigma Chis do that kind of thing, but I just wanted to clear that air immediately.
On the general topic of the thread, I knew plenty of people who were assholes in my frat would would not do well at Bonnaroo. I also knew plenty of people who would love the experience, and I brought some of them with me to Roo in 2008. Everyone had a great time and never did we have a bad frat-related experience. So as many people have said before, down with generalizations!

A group dance, generally used as a hazing activity. Put one thumb in your mouth and the other in the sphincter of the person in front of you. Everybody does this so that it forms a loop. You proceed to dance around in a circle. Should anyone's thumb become dislodged from the ass of the person in front of them, they must switch thumbs.
Naked pledge 1 bends over while naked pledge 2 lies on his back under naked pledge 1. One of the brothers pours a can of beer down naked pledge 1's butt crack which essentially "funnels" into naked pledge 2's mouth. Nasty business really.

Yo. Me and my boys are getting a 30 ft RV. We're gonna party it up with some keystone light. All the ladies are invited inside for a VIP show.
Oh awesome!! Me and my friends were actually looking for like some kind of VIP party. Hay, do you guys paint boobs too?? Cause we're totally getting our boobs painted but we just don't know where to go.
The problem a lot of frats have is a simple equation: Wealth + Sense of Entitlement + Alcohol = Obnoxiousness
The problem with frat guys at concerts is even more simple: Three guys actually like the band, seven more show up just to get completely plastered and piss off lesbians they comically hit on.

I'll join in the "generalizations suck/ I know good people in frats" chorus.
A couple of interesting observations: I tore tickets at a concert venue for a couplle of summers in high school. Crowds that made life worst for the staff (translates directly to: drunkest): DMB and Buffet, closely followed by Phish. Ozzfest: totally chill crowd. My point isn't that DMB or Buffet crowds are bad (I'm included in those groups), but just that crowds were often "easy" or "hard" to deal with in ways we didn't expect.
Another interesting stereotyping observation about Bonnaroo: I cut off my hair (was down to my butt) in '05. Anywhere out in the lot, Shakedown, etc. I was treated completely differently (basically ignored). Everything about me was identical except I cut my hair and a group of people that seemed warm and friendly to me '02-'04 treated me like I didn't exist. I don't necessarily blame them, just an observation.
i dont know if these boys are frat boys or what but last year during jack johnson where my crew and i had been sitting all day were just chilling (3 girls) and a bunch of young super wasted obnoxious boys about five feet away start screaming USAAAAAAAAA USAAAAAAAAA waving their american flag in the air, and funneling beer (im not sure how they got a funnel in centeroo)... we must have been giving them weird looks because they yelled at us about not having any american pride. I proceeded to tell them, that i have no american pride, as i am from canada.... they then made several obnoxious comments about my country. then after all that they had peed into cups and got rowdy and splashed their urine on all those surrounding them... it was not my most pleasant bonnaroo moment to say the least.
Obviously, the true meaning of a frat boy is a guy that lives in a frat house. That alone is not a bad thing, although I wouldn't be able to live with like 15 other dudes (the smell would be unbearable).
However, like a lot of terms, frat boy has taken on a new meaning. There have been plenty of movies over the years that have depicted massive frat parties with hundreds of drunken douchebags. These people aren't just a creation of the movie industry, they really exist. Many of them aren't true frat boys, but because of theses movies, they get lumped in.
Personally, when I say something like "Fuckin frat boys..." or whatever, I'm talking about the drunken loudmouth wearing his hat on backwards and a polo shirt with a popped collar over another t-shirt. Chances are he's not a real frat boy, but he's sure as hell acting like the classic movie frat boy.

Ya I figured the 'frat boy' stereotype couldn't entirely come from people wearing greek letters since I don't see many at Bonnaroo. Frat guy = short hair - tie dyed clothing?
One time I think I was the jerkstore at Bonnaroo - at Uncle Earl in 07 me and my friends weren't really in the mood for the mellowness so pulled out the schedule to see who else was playing. But we were rather close to the stage so it was disrespectful I think. As we were walking away I caught a dirty glare from an old hippie (santa beard + dead hat). I guess I contributed to the frat guy stereotype since I had short hair and wasn't wearing anything that would classify me as hippy or hipster. Didn't mean any disrespect tho.
Can only remember a couple of groups that ruined my own time and they all had short hair too.

^^^^
i don't think anyone should be judged on the clothes they wear to a show. having a tie dye shirt and long hair doesn't make you a hippie. i can't stand when people think you must look a certain way at certain shows. i'm not going to wear anything different than the clothes i normally wear. no matter what kind of show i go to, i'll wear whatever i feel like wearing. i have short hair and by no way look like what someone thinks a person looks like that listens to phish or whatever.
so you weren't feeling the show, you can leave. if someone gives you a dirty look, f*ck em.
My worst experience at last year's roo wasn't with frat daddies but high school age kids from Manchester. They were doing their best to ruin everyone's experience at Pearl Jam. Jumping around, wrestling, making animal noises and talking loudly, laughing and yelling at painted breasts, etc. Groups make it worse, as someone already posted. I don't ever mind a single frat guy. It's the obnoxious behavior common to groups that I can't stand. On occasion though, I've had trouble with a single raver. They can be pretty disrespectful sometimes too.
No matter who you are, the people around you paid a lot of money to be at roo. Try not to let your actions ruin an experience that they really want to make the most of.
Were these the same obnoxious kids who sat in a circle making loud animal noises and clapping a beat? I remember them calling their game "animal noises" and not a soul around them was impressed at their d-bagginess.
On the subject of wearing certain clothes to certain concerts - I always thought it was funny to dress the opposite of what was expected. For instance, my girlfriend likes AFI a lot, so I bought us tickets to a Black Audio show. I wore a pink An Albatross T-shirt. Needless to say, I stuck out.
