a while back i had to do system restore on my computer(basically resetting it to factory settings), and i remembered to move all my important stuff to my external EXCEPT my itunes folder...awesome
i've been told you can email apple and they will reinstate whatever itunes were purchased from their store. does anyone know if this is true?
also, i've since added more tunes(phish shows and pretty lights, so nothing purchased), and i want to put them onto my ipod. i'm afraid, though, to connect my ipod with all the songs that are no longer on my computer for fear it will erase all of them and only put the songs currently in itunes on it.
does anyone know if that will happen or not? i don't want to potentially lose the last accessible outlet for the music i haven't gotten back yet.

when amy moved in and brought her comp...i connected my ipod (40+ gigs of music, not alot to some but it is my world) and didnt lose any. BUT i originaly had unchecked the "sync with computer when connected" box.....and im not too sure on being able to take the music from the ipod to the comp...but i dont really see why not.

yeah...i have a smaller ipod(8g i think) that i borrowed from a friend when i thought i'd lost my main 20g. i connected that to my itunes and it actually carried over about 3 albums INTO my itunes. but, it wasn't initially set up with my itunes, and my 20g was. so i'm not sure if that makes a difference.
As stated above, you can turn off the "automatically sync" setting, so when you plug in your iPod, it won't sync with your iTunes. Your iPod will still show up in your iTunes, and you can drag and drop only the songs you want onto your iPod and not everything. And you will still keep the songs you have on there. It's kinda hard to explain, I had to have a friend show me how to do. I had this issue when my computer got stolen and I got a new computer.
As for re-downloading songs you already got, I believe you can, I was able to when I did it. Log in to your iTunes account and go into your Account and purchased music. You can authorize your computer to play these songs (you can authorize up to 5 computers to play your purchased songs).

if you go to Target there is a program called "Tune Tools 2".
With this you can drag and drop songs on and off of anybodys ipods. A very nice tool for like 15 bucks. This also makes it easier to have your friend come over with there ipod and can drag and drop all there songs onto your computer.
there's a way to snag songs off an ipod without having to purchase any software or anything like that.
what you do is open up My Computer. find the drive that the ipod is once it's plugged in. mine's the F drive, but i'm not sure if it's like that with all ipods. anyways, double click the drive, and you'll see a couple of folders, "calendars", "contacts", and "notes".
to see the "ipod control" folder you have to show hidden files and folders. to do this, click Tools > Folder Options. once the menu pops up click on the "View" tab and towards the middle you'll see "hidden files and folders". make sure "show hidden files and folders" is checked. click OK.
now the "Ipod Control" folder should be visible in the folder. open up the "music" folder. now you'll see 50 folders named "F00- F49". inside all these folders are your songs. they're all divided up randomly and the file names are totally random, just 4 letter combinations, but if you're just trying to copy the files onto the computer you just go through each folder and copy everything into a folder on your computer. make sure you COPY the files, not MOVE them. i hope that's not too confusing, i wish it was a little neater with pictures and stuff, but i'm pretty sure i learned this trick online somewhere so it's probably out there much more simplified.

jeff...that's awesome! i guess i'm gonna have to go through and rename everything though, huh? either way, you're a lifesaver!! as soon as i get karma back you've got it for sure
Do you have a mac or a PC? There are open source programs that you can use to pull stuff off your iPod and I think the track names will be retained. I've used the one on this page: www.opensourcemac.org/ to pull some music of my fiance's iPod and it worked fine. You will still have to authorize your computer for anything you bought on iTunes, but anything you ripped from CD or *ahem* obtained otherwise will port over with no hassles.

i didn't go through all the files, but the ones i did go through were ones that HAD NOT been purchased through itunes. perhaps if i'd looked further i would have seen otherwise.
but, the good news is that when i plugged it into itunes, it asks if you want to transfer purchased songs, i said yes, and voila! my songs were back
Just install the latest version of winamp or mediamonkey. you can take from and put into anything you want - no renaming or whatever - it just works. and its way less bloated than itunes.
