Hey there, i've been lurking these boards the past couple of days. originally to get some info on roo since 09 will be my first year, but i've continued returning because of the beautiful vibes i get from everybody- there's so much love and anticipation for this festival!
As stated, this summer will be my first roo and i'm absolutely pumped to see Phish, the Mars Volta, MGMT, Andrew Bird, Galactic, Band of Horses, moe., gov't mule, and a couple others. I'll be 17 the week after roo so my parents were kind enough to spot me 300$ and get my ticket ;D. I'll be coming from New Orleans and i just can't wait. I had a bunch of questions, but I went through every other "what's it like?" thread and i've narrowed it down to only a few unanswered questions:
First: Tobacco. I imagine the "general store" equivalents will sell cigarettes, but at what price? Do they prioritize I.D.'ing, or is anybody old enough to be at bonnaroo old enough to smoke?
Also, what're the rules on hookahs? I know it says "No glass of any kind!" but is a hookah acceptable in the campgrounds? In centeroo? I can't imagine anything better than sitting under a (rare) tree with my buds smoking the hookah, nor can i imagine anything to be more friend-attracting. Are there vendors that sell hookahs? My friend is in the market for a new one, and what better place to get one than the roo?
Second: Spray paint. I saw all the graffitti pictures, so i know it goes on. Do you have to sneak the cans in? Do they openly let you bring them in centeroo? Or is it luck of the draw, depending on who checks your bag?
Next: Cameras. I have my digital i want to bring, but i've read about the deluge a few years back and i don't really want to chance ruining my camera. Instead, i was thinking about bringing five or six disposable cameras and keeping them in zip-lock bags. Which would you recommend? I have a thing for film over digital so i'm leaning towards the disposable.
Lastly: Shoes. I started reading the 14(?) page shoe thread and have decided to get either a pair of sinooks or a pair of crocs. But i'm tempted to wear flip-flops through the campsites and put them in my bag once i get into centeroo. At Jazzfest this past year i went all seven days without any shoes and it really was ideal. I'm just worried about glass, but that's so strictly enforced i feel like it shouldn't phase me.
I plan on camping in the Tents-only section. Does anybody have any advice directed solely for tents-only? anything to heed? and i've got a few no no word questions, if somebody would shoot me a PM i'd appreciate that.

General store is overpriced, and i am not sure if they sell cigarettes. Last year there was an American Spirits tent that was giving cigarettes away? Im not sure exactly, i dont smoke that stuff hehe
my recommendation, bring all the smokes you think you are gonna want bc if you arent of age there is the chance you wont be able to buy them.

I never really got a clear answer on this, nor have i seen anyone with a hookah there. I am pretty sure when they say no glass it means no glass, but it seems silly to me they wouldnt allow a hookah bc its not like you are gonna smash it or leave it lying around like you might a bottle. However, as much as i love hookah i would say leave it at home because its probably not worth the hassle of setup for how little you may actually use it. i was surprised by how little time i actually spent in the campsites.

The wall is for graffiti so it would be ridiculous if they didnt allow you to bring in the necessary art supplies, but i havent tried to bring them in myself so im not really any help here.

I brought disposables last year that did the job fine but this is pretty much a judgement call on your part... Do you want to take care of your digital cam the whole weekend?

i had crocs last year, trying the sanuks this year. im probably going to be going barefoot in centeroo as much as i can bear but i will say this, you are going to be walking A LOT.

There is plenty of newbie advice and threads all over the place here. Please do your searching and post in existing threads. This thread will probably get locked since there are about 3 of these a day lately. But yes read up and be prepared, bring your paint, and have a blast. Its hard not to.
You can often buy cigarettes in the campgrounds, standard price is usually $5/pack. Not sure if they sell them at the general store, if they do they'll be overpriced. But probably still best to bring what you'll need with you.

get someone who's 21 to grab you some free smokes from the American Spirit tent. I only had to pay for one pack the entire weekend last year. I prefer American Spirits, too. They taste cleaner.
Cigs are over $7 in the general store. I buy a carton in WV before I get there because the Wal-Mart tends to run out of Marlboro cartons. I would bring a carton, if your a smoker, because it's better to have too much than to run out and end up paying $7-8 on a pack. My buddies had to do it 2 years ago, and I'm positive it was at least $7 for a pack. Not sure of the exact price.
As for the hookah, why risk it? It'll just become a hassle. You want to be as light as possible, and as task free as possible. Bring a CLEAN metal and plastic one if you really need to though. I doubt you could get that into centeroo though TBH
Yeah, I wouldn't suggest buying ANYTHING from the general store. Plus, you can find just about ANYTHING for sell in the campgrounds, like someone said above. I always take a carton and that's plenty, even as much as I share.
I've always taken my digital/35mm/oldschool poloroid cameras, in gallon zip lock bags.
Hookah.... sounds like a lot more trouble than it's worth. And the ride down and back, well a hookah is a lot harder to conceal properly than other things.
Shoes, well that's a preference thing, I'd say start looking now and whatever you find you think you'd like, wear them and walk for long periods of time before June.
I have to join in on the hatred for the general store. WAY overpriced. You are better off bringing smokes with than buying them there. Don't bet on the American Spirit tent either if your not 21. The only place that cards you is the smoke tent. Best bet find some people to get them for you. They are free in there.

Don't bring disposable. You aren't going to get the pictures you want with those things. Bring your dig and a plastic baggie to keep it in if it rains.

You bet it is 14 pages. Shoes are a serious thing at roo. Bring both. And after the headliner you don't want to be walking barefoot in the field at the What stage. Looks like a nuclear trash bomb went off.

I brought my hookah the first few years with no problem but stopped in '07 when it occurred to me that it is glass and could be confiscated. What they confiscate can vary widely depending on who searches you so I wouldn't bring anything glass that you don't want to risk.
You could buy a plastic hookah, if you really want to bring one.

I think a great many people would be willing to hook you up at the American Spirit tent... at least I would but I'm not a 3-pack-a-day smoker, either...

As far as buying a hookah at Roo... not likely. Vendors of such things are rare at Roo thesedays, even glass can be hard to find (or at least harder to find than you'd think).

I found out last year and the year before - you just need to be in the right place at the right time and they will come to you

Spray paint is no problem, I brought in a few cans last year without and hassle, just dispose of them properly. Hookah wouldn't be a wise idea, it will either not get used, or confiscated at the gates. You won't want to lug that thing around anyways. You want to stay as light packed as possible.
Bring yourself a carton of cigarettes or find me walking through the camp sites I don't smoke but will bring a carton or two myself and sell/trade them $5 a pack. General store is about 8 or 9 a pack. Last year I brought flip flops but ended up with really sore feet, I think because of the flip flops I chose to wear. So I wore shoes the rest of the weekend and for good reason, it got a good bit muddy last year after the rain. Also, you don't DARE want to go into a port-o-hell without shoes.
Lastly, WELCOME! You will enjoy yourself at Bonnaroo trust me
i've been very worried about the possibility to get corn. should i be? should i bring my own...SNACKS? if u catch my drift.
lets just say, i eat alotttttt. and only really good food. so you also have to factor that into my question. karma goes whoever helps me get my answer
Look in the right places and you'll be fine. But if you're super particular in your taste, bringing your own munchies is a completely acceptable course of action.. I ate some food from a "non-licensed vendor" one night last year and all that happened was a tummy ache. Luck o' the draw, or be really good at smelling out bull honkey.
for shoes at Roo, I'm a big believer in Crocs. But once I'm settled on my blanket in Centeroo, often I'll slip them off and only put them on again when I need to walk somewhere. I'm definitely a barefoot gal, but the grass is really scratchy and uncomfortable.
I also tried flip flops Thursday night my first year since I wear them 24/7 in the summer at home - even to walk long distances. We didn't head into Centeroo until late and were sitting down most of the time, but my feet were SO not happy.
