I'd get to the shows at least 20 minutes before they start if you want a good spot. The best plan is to get there as the band before the show you want to see is ending. When they finish up most people will leave and make room while some will stay. You'll be able to find a good spot and if you don't mind waiting a little bit - you'll have a good time.
Most people stand around but there definitely is some dancing. depends on the show i guess.
^ this is true but keep in mind that if your must-see is a hugely popular must-see for many other folks than you might wanna show up even earlier. I had a friend who stayed at the Which stage all day long waiting for Tool, and was in the front row of the pit. I wouldn't personally do this but I guess it depends on your defintion of "Must-SEE"

i wasnt to worried bout gettin up close for most of the sets. we usually just chilled back in th lawn for the most part so we can spread out and relax. we got pretty close for Pearl Jam and Lupe though. we were also able to move our way up for Metallica as well.
unfortunately we had real close spot for Kanye. we were 2 rows from the wall seperating the pit. with all that waiting it was fun sitting on the rocks that were in that area for 2+ hours.
