why does any of this even matter to anyone? if you dont like a band noone is forcing you to like them or listen to them. everyone has different tastes and that is how it is and that is how it will continue to be.
who is the radioheads? i live in a pumpkin patch and i don't get tv or radio or rock band on nentendu where some song no one has ever heard called creep is on it. also i've never seen saturday night live or dave letterman or that leno guy or conan, which i saw the radioheads have also played on. also i've never loooked at spin magazine or rolling stone or any other music magazine for that matter because the radioheads have been on teh cover of those magazines like a million times and since i don't know who they are they must not be good. in addition, since i live in a pumpkin patch i never been to hot topic in the mall or even walked by a hot topic and seen radiohead t-shirts in the window even though about 3 years ago thats all they had in the window.
also, i like to think i know about things that are too difficult for others to "get" because it inflates my sense of self-worth.
really, radiohead could not be more popular or critically acclaimed by EVERY MAJOR PUBLICATION IN THE WESTERN WORLD than they currently are. also also, its fucking crazy to get mad that someone else likes the same music you do. do you listen to bands because of their fans or because of the music.
who are you to tell a band how long a song can be? that's like telling radiohead that eiirp is about a minute and a half too long, or even longer when they play it live. since when are there time limits? are you going to turn into a pumpkin? in my pumpkin patch?
Really?!?!?!?! Is that a joke? Most people don't know who Radiohead is? Do you live in a cave? Or maybe North Dakota... Most people know who Radiohead is. I promise you that. And you keep naming all these radio played musicians like Bruce and Miley Cyrus. Part of the reason these people are so famous is b/c they are shown on radio and tv all the time. It's forced down people's throats...like Nickel Back.
I know a lot of people on this board are young, but let me explain this to you. Most people don't know how Radiohead is. The median age in this country is almost 37 years old. How many people over the age of 37 do you think know who Radiohead is?? Essentially none. About 20% of the peopulation is under 20. about 15% of the population is under 15. Essentially none of them know who Radiohead is. That right there is 65% that don't know Radiohead. Maybe, maybe half of the people that are between 15 and 37 will know who Radiohead is. Half of our country is rural red states. Even that would still only amount to 30% of the population. To be honest I would guess that less then 10% of the population knows who Radiohead is. That is not an unreasonable statement.
You are the one that is living in a proverbial cave, if you think that the majority of people know a band that doesn't really get any play on commercial radio. Most of the country isn't like the people on this board.
Most of this country is poor. Very poor. Almost 60% of the population of our country will spend at least one year below the poverty line during their adult life. For a family of 4 the poverty line is $21,000. Do you really think that the majority of people care to spend time or money to listen to Radiohead? (at any given time about 20% of our population is below the poverty line). The majority of our country lives in abject poverty worrying about paying for their food and housing and transportation.
I work in a very impoverished area providing medical care in an under-served rural area. I have lived in some of the largest cities in the country and some of the poorest. I don't live in a cave. You don't know me. Please don't insult me.
Most people don't know who Radiohead is. I can guarantee that.

Do you really not know what you wrote up there is completely false? This is getting a little strange. These things you are declaring..."no one under 15 or over 37 essentially know who Radiohead is." What?!? That is a pretty outrageous statement. Just b/c most of the states vote red during election time doesn't mean they live in shacks in the mountains with no electricity or running water. Most Americans aren't very poor either. We're extremely wealthy compared to the rest of the world. A large portion of Americans have computers, and they download music, and they hear or read about bands like Radiohead who are huge. The person living in the poorest neighborhood in America is still going to have an interest in something and see magazines on news stands. We don't live in Sudan.

I guess my two cents probably will not help or make a difference...
I kinda like the band Phish. They are o.k. However, if it was just a Phish show, I would probably not go. That being said, I do realize that 70% of the people going to the Roo will be HUGE Phish fans! Eron, I respect that you do not like them as much as others and will not resort to namecalling...
Yet...
Saying less than half the people will be there because of Phish makes no sense. The Dead never sold albulms much either...why? Because their live shows is WHERE IT IS AT. The same can be said of Phish. The musicianship they show on stage MAKES the music come alive!
I may not be a diehard Phish fan, but no one has criticized me for not being one either. I am, however, a HUGE fan of Bonnaroo and I am glad that Phish will be their representing jam band roots.

I understand that eron made a lot..a LOT of ridiculous claims, but still no need to gang up on him. Show some heart people. Oh and what dudezer said, practice what you preach. Honestly eron, I get where your coming from. You just sort of, said it the wrong way. When a phan snickers and calls me a custy, I just laugh it off and let those douche-phans get their karma that's comin' to them. The phans you speak of get their come-uppins <sp?> everyday when they choose to see Phish for the 847th time over seeing a new band. Every band/genre has those fanbois, just the way it goes
I think I am a little confused as to why everyone attacked the original poster. Just because he does not like Phish? because he does not like what should be a 5 min song turned into a 20 min jam.
Well - I guess ya'll should start attacking me and calling me an idiot also - because I know nothing about Phish - the few songs that I have heard are ok - but nothing I would yell and scream from the mountaintops about.
I am trying to have a more open mind about Phish and have asked for suggestions from other Inforooers. I'll give them a chance - but - truthfully - I doubt I will ever be a "phan". I like Trey but Phish - so far - does nothing for me.
And don't say - "wait til you see them live" That's not going to do it for me. I tend to get into studio stuff first and then enjoy a live show.
But to everyone that has been confrontational to the original poster - why??? Just because he does not like Phish and actually put together a well worded post together about it???

You know, Ive never been into Phish, but now that theyre playing Bonnaroo Im on the hunt for ways to turn me on to them so i have even more music to enjoy. This thread seems pointless. So what if a band you dont enjoy has fans that love them? Take it easy.
I hate Phish. I think their music is boring. I won't be seeing their show.
I hate Springsteen. I think his music is boring. I won't be seeing his show.
So, there. If anyone has a problem with that, you won't find me giving a shit. Eron, you need to get off your college radio listening, "I don't give a shit what people think" high horse and actually stop giving a shit what people think. If people give you a hard time for not liking a certain kind of music, then fuck 'em. Stop pissing people off by passive aggressively ragging on the entire fanbase in return.
What everyone needs to understand is that music isn't just music for people. You all know this, but I don't think you really stop and think about. Music is a part of each person's identity. Fanbases are a sub-culture and the people of them will defend their identity if they feel threatened. Some take threats more lightly than others. My proclamation that I don't like Phish will threaten some people's identity because I am not what is comfortable or normal for them and, yes, they won't be able to understand why I am criticizing a part of their identity. They take it personally as a result, regardless of the intention. People kill each other over stuff like this. Let's stop the violence!
