Honestly, why do I have to respect them? They play different songs every night. OK lots of bands do that. They play their songs differently every night. Well most bands would call that F'ing up.
I respect the fact that they seem to respect the dollar, which is kinda cool, because all their fans seem so self righteous.

You see, your entitled to your opinion... but when you say things like this, you just come off as ignorant.
West Side Story fans are all the same. Everytime I meet one it's like hey maybe you own the soundtrack and you didn't like it but you have to see it live to really get it. The Chicago cast at the Oriental Theatre improvs or f's up and makes the jet song into like this huge production and it goes for longer than the original recording on the soundtrack. In Detroit the Hilberry Theatre has their own radio station and I get to hear exclusive Sam Sheppard musicals and off Broadway productions of Chicago from little towns in Kansas, still I like that not a people listen to the indie musical stuff. It makes me better and when I break out into song in front of the fountain at the indie coffee shop and do some improv Wicked all the cool people join in and the people with earbuds in can just keep on enjoying their West Side Story soundtrack that they got at Sam Goody. Enjoy people were pissed on this board when Richard Gere did Razzle Dazzle. I have heard some high school sophmores blow Gere out of the water but still I know the whole musical scene has gone commercial. I accept that I know only 4% of the United States knows what a musical is. I understand musicals aren't for everyone. I get it. All I'm trying to say is whether you are into Radiohead or Phish we can all agree they are both better than the West Side Story Soundtrack. The day will come when the Jets get booked for a late night Which stage set. That day we will look at this thread and laugh.
Today it is fucking cold in Detroit. I can't wait for Bonnaroo to get here because for four days I won't have to read this message board and I will be in the sun with the people on this board who love the experience. Outside of Dierks Bentley in 07 I have never walked past a set with no one there so everyband at Roo has fans and Phish has Phans and I will check them out. I have never seen them live and I don't much care for their recordings but I trust the people on this board to not lead me astray. If Phish isn't very good there is always a movie theatre in Centeroo and my source who I can't reveal said they are playing West Side Story.
I had to get in on this post because you are all silly for posting in this thread and I wanted to be silly too.
Nahh I will be in VIP. I can't be living amongst the Plebes. Thanks for the sentiment though. Only problem is that I will be so close to the main stage that Phish might disturb my nap.

I don't care if you like them or not, but you best respect them. Souls will be pwn'd at that late night. Mark my words.
Phish fans...they rage harder than you do.

I sometimes find these types of threads to be entertaining, but the " I don't like your kind of music " thing gets old fast. Do what I do. If I don't want to hear a particular group, I find something else to do. You'd all really have something to rage about if Roo had country western bands. Those fans like to drink and fight! I know, I use to work security at We Fest in MN. I'll take hippies any day of the week over that. Peace
Just know that we rage harder than you do. Thats all that really matters.
No one likes Phish, bro. They didn't just sell out their entire tour in a matter of hours or anything like that.
Why should you respect them? I dunno, maybe because the legend of Bonnaroo was built upon the shoulders of Trey Anastasio? Mike Gordon gets more tang than you do, Fishman wears a dress, and Page ate your moms sandwiches as we tag teamed her on his lear jet?
Is it just me or are Phish fans unable to understand how other people don't think that Phish is that good. I have had numerous people tell me that I don't like live music if I don't like Phish.

Kind of disappointed I missed this thread until now.
Here's my take.
I am a Phishhead. To me, they are the best live band ever. I have seen them 54 times, and I have plans to see them 15 times in the next 4 months, bonnaroo included.
I have also attended every Bonnaroo.
My musical tastes are what you might consider extremely diverse. My 5 favorite touring bands are Phish, Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Ween and the Disco Biscuits, in that order. I also like Tool, Metalica, Pearl Jam, David Byrne, Beastie Boys, NIN, Sigur Ros, Ghostland Observatory, Ben Harper, Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Cut Chemist, Grateful Dead.. I could go on and on and on here, but I hope you get the point.
OF all these bands, None of them, Radiohead and Grateful Dead included, have ever put on a show in front of me as grandiose and awe-inspiring as Phish has. I have seen Radiohead 9 times, 8 times last year. Second night of Hollywood Bowl and Second Night of All Points West and Bonnaroo 06 were my 3 favorite Radiohead shows. Some of the worst Phish shows I have seen have even been better musically than a few of these bands best shows.
They are capable of creating a type of show that is so unique and unlike anything that I have ever seen, that I really can't describe it to you in words. Not only that, but each show is different than the next. One show might be very spacey, the next show might be very funky, and the next show might be very rock-and-roll driven. They have this unique ability to blend the multiple genres of music into a seamless format. On top of that, they cover a number of artists, some of whom are on the lineup this year (Beastie Boys, Del McCoury, David Byrne/Talking Heads). They have the ability to incorporate an element of humor into their show that only Ween has surpassed.
To me they are already a legendary band, and even though I have been to every Bonnaroo, this year, I am coming solely for them. I plan to see a number of acts at the festival, at least 20 or 25, but make no mistake about it, Phish is priority A number 1 for me, and I know I am not alone when I say this.
Bonnaroo's existence is predicated on the fact that Phish was able to draw 70-80,000 fans to the northeast and to Florida for a multi-day festival. Many of the organizers of Bonnaroo are the same people who organized the Phish festivals. Jonathan Mayer and Ashley Capps have even come out and said that the Phish festivals were the precursor to the Bonnaroo experience. Without ever playing the festival, they have been extremely instrumental in its existence.
I don't expect everyone to like Phish or to even understand what they are and how they do it. But please understand that there are many of us who have developed a bond with Phish that is second to none. This band has come out and said that they feel it to. They have said that there is a mutual energy and communication happening between the band and audience when they play. And this shouldn't be a foreign concept to anyone here, b/c I genuinely hope that the reason you are here today, reading these words, is because you have developed a mutual energy and communication with Bonnaroo itself.
"Bonnaroo" is the same type of energy you feel at a Phish show. It is a loss of self and a recognition that each of us are part of something larger than ourselves, and the way we tap into this energy is via music. Once we find it, it is ours forever, and whether you've felt this with Phish, with Bonnaroo, or with both, I assure you it is very real for the people who feel it.
I have no problem saying that Phish playing Bonnaroo will be the confluence of the two greatest musical experiences of my life.

It started with the Grateful Dead it moved on to Phish and now it seems to be plagueing The Disco Biscuits and STS9. It is musical snobbery and I am a fan of the Dead and have learned to really enjoy Phish but can't seem to get the Biscuits and Sound Tribe and to me the fans of these two groups are the more obnoxious now but they will be replace by the next big thing
It isn't Phish fans in general. It has been said before but every band has jerks in its fan base. The more fans a band have the more jerk fans the band will have. It is really that simple. You can't just go saying that every fan of any given band is a douche.

i enjoy phish, but i also enjoy lots of other music. phish is icing on the cake for me this year, but i'm just as excited to see the seemingly unknown, Vieux Farka Toure, as I am phish. fans of any band can come off as music snobs, but to completely generalize a fanbase is not an accurate or fair statement. live music fans rock.. regardless of the music that floats their proverbial boat.
I still don't get this. Who cares why you go to Roo. I go for the indie bands. I don't care for Jam bands. I also don't cut down those who do. Listen to whatever you want, I will still be your friend. I will miss all of you this year. I will not be at Roo. I have decided, every other year we are going to try another festival. This year we are going to Sasquatch. Next year we will be back at Roo. Have fun all and we will see you next year. ;D
That's certainly a matter of opinion. I prefer to look at things this way:
Phish = Apples Radiohead = Oranges
All very tasty.
can someone award this man a Nobel Peace Prize?
im not a hardcore Phish "phan" but i do love the music. And, i know for a fact the only reason i dont like them more than i do is because i havent seen them live yet.
