Is it just me or are Phish fans unable to understand how other people don't think that Phish is that good. I have had numerous people tell me that I don't like live music if I don't like Phish.
Guess what, I like live music. Phish is ok, but I don't like 20 min versions of 5 minute songs (unless maybe some arch nemesis of mine was going to kill me when the song ended, then Phish playing live would be great!!).
Phish is ok, they aren't extremely popular, except among their fans. They have a small, but very loyal following. That is great. They are a great niche band.
We have over 4 months until we descend upon Manchester. Phish fans, please understand that the MAJORITY of people going to 'Roo are NOT going to see Phish. It is quite likely that less then half of the people will be there for Phish's sets.
Enjoy the show for yourself, and you can think all you want that everyone else is missing out, but we aren't. We just don't share your tastes. It is ok to like different music. Phish aren't the first band to come along, and they aren't the first band to reunite when their bank accounts have run low. They also will not be the last.
I don't care if you like them or not, but you best respect them. Souls will be pwn'd at that late night. Mark my words.
Phish fans...they rage harder than you do.
Honestly, why do I have to respect them? They play different songs every night. OK lots of bands do that. They play their songs differently every night. Well most bands would call that F'ing up.
I respect the fact that they seem to respect the dollar, which is kinda cool, because all their fans seem so self righteous.

Is it just me or are you trying way too hard to generalize, stereotype, and hate on Phish and their fans?
I mean, come on!
First off, Phish does not have a small fanbase. I don't even know where you're basing that claim off of. Second, playing songs differently every night is called improvisation, not F'ing up. That's another strange and ridiculous claim.
This isn't really worth anybody's time. I sometimes wonder why I bother
Just know that we rage harder than you do. Thats all that really matters.
No one likes Phish, bro. They didn't just sell out their entire tour in a matter of hours or anything like that.
Why should you respect them? I dunno, maybe because the legend of Bonnaroo was built upon the shoulders of Trey Anastasio? Mike Gordon gets more tang than you do, Fishman wears a dress, and Page ate your moms sandwiches as we tag teamed her on his lear jet?
This can really be said about fans of many bands with a reasonably-sized fan base. People get very passionate, sometimes they're not able to remain objective. It happens. Respect another's right to like what they like without engaging in name calling. I'm amazed at the level to which people are willing to sink over a band that doesn't know whether they are dead or alive.

I am not trying to generalize. I am just stating what I have seen in the last 24 hours on the board.
Why can't some Phish fan just say: Oh that is cool I understand that you don't like Phish, it isn't for everyone.
They did sell out a lot of shows, a lot of people go to multiple shows. Phish make a lot of money, I totally respect that. Don't go too crazy basing their musical appeal based on how fast they sold out though. They can't come close to touching Miley Cyrus in terms of selling out concerts. So I don't know if you want to use that as a criteria for them being some great musical force.
They are awesome when it comes to commerce. Definitely one of the top acts of all time. If you want to judge how good a group is based on how much money they can make, then Phish is awesome based on that criteria.
As far as producing music, I honestly think a few of their songs are ok, and most of it I don't care for. Do I think they are terrible, no. They have never sold very many albums. This doesn't make them a bad musician or a good musician.
Phish are Phish. Their fans really don't seem to understand that. Some people are going to like them. Most people aren't going to care for them. That is how it works. There is no musician that is going to have the majority of people in the world as fans.
I know that most people in the United States don't even know who Radiohead is. I know that most of the country doesn't like their music. I am glad they don't. I honestly wouldn't want to listen to anything that most people like. It would probably sound something like Miley Cyrus.
If ole Eron doesn't realize that Radiohead fans are exactly the same way then he needs to pull his head out of his bum.
You tell a Radiohead fan that you think Radiohead is garbage, they will act the same way. They are just as bad, if not worse than Phish fans.
I honestly have rarely seen that type of behavior from Radiohead fans. On most of the message boards I have gone to, Radiohead fans are thankful that most people don't like Radiohead.
In fact, when Radiohead announced they were playing the Grammy's about 80% of the posters on the board were against them playing because of the exposure. Most of the fans that were posting didn't want all those people to see Radiohead because they "won't get it" etc. Sure any fan of any group, will think that group is great. I cannot see how you could ever expect Joe the Pummer to listen to Radiohead, and I don't know many Radiohead fans that would expect that.
The attitudes shown in the last 24 hours by Phish fans with statements about me and others not liking live music because we don't like the fish or other posts are much more belligerent then anything I saw posted by Radiohead fans back in 2006.
Why do people make baseless statements like "you are just as extreme as they are"
I am just saying it is OK to not like Phish. I am not EXTREME at all. I have not insulted anyone. If you think Radiohead sucks, that is great. I would rather you not listen to the awesome music I listen to and then you miss out
"I know that most people in the United States don't even know who Radiohead is. I know that most of the country doesn't like their music. I am glad they don't. You only listen to whats hot according to Pitchfork. You heard that band "before everyone else liked them."
Seriously though, I know I'm coming off as a douche, but I'm doing that on purpose. You on the other hand should probably quit before you say more stuff like "I don't like what everyone else listens to because its popular." You are losing all credibility by the second.

Really?!?!?!?! Is that a joke? Most people don't know who Radiohead is? Do you live in a cave? Or maybe North Dakota... Most people know who Radiohead is. I promise you that. And you keep naming all these radio played musicians like Bruce and Miley Cyrus. Part of the reason these people are so famous is b/c they are shown on radio and tv all the time. It's forced down people's throats...like Nickel Back.

Honestly, this post is my point. Why do you get personal?? Why do you insult me?? Do you Phish fans not see the difference between discussing music and groups and insulting people.
I do read Pitchfork, but I also read about 9 or 10 other music blogs and listen to them every day. I also listen to NPR and multiple College Radio stations too. I like what I like. I don't see how I am losing credibility. My point was that popular doesn't equal good.
Until the mid 90's when I was at College I listened only to radio rock. I was exposed to more experienmental music by the College Radio Station WVUM in Miami (which I still listen to over the web). I fell in love with Radiohead. As my tastes changed, Radiohead happend to also change and I still like them. Lots of music I listened to then (NIN, Prodigy, Ween, Metallica, etc) I don't listen to now.
Radiohead is my favorite band. I love their music, I see them live whenever I can. Are they right for you, maybe not. That is ok with me. I don't expect people to share my tastes in music. Heck I don't expect people to share my religious beliefs either. People like to argue about that too.
If you hate Radiohead, cool. Insult the music, or whatever. Just don't insult me. You don't know me. When you insult someone you don't know it just shows that you are either an ignorant person or you have become socially crippled by the anonymity granted by internet message boards.
I've met good Phish fans, I've met bad Phish fans. I've drank a beer with Phish fans, I've been called a 'custie' by Phish fans. That being said, that doesn't negate the talent of the band as a whole. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of their music. I would come close to saying that I hate Phish. However, there's no use in namecalling and petty bickering over something so trivial as what band a person likes. More power to Phish fans, but they're not for me.
Radiohead is my favorite band of all time, hands down. That being said, I've met just as many bad Radiohead fans as I have Phish fans. You know the type, those mass produced hipsters who would rather call you a dumbass because you haven't heard the latest Fleet Foxes album and still enjoy Modest Mouse even though they *cough* 'sold out' *cough*.
So really, why argue? Let those bad seeds in the Phish group hate and argue and tell you that you're a cancer that is killing Bonnaroo. Who cares what they think? You're still going to have a good time, regardless of their opinion. Posting a thread about how much Phish fans suck will only make things even more negative around here, and that's the last thing I need.
That being said, if Phish manages to cause Bonnaroo to sell out before I can get a ticket, so help me god, I'm assassinating Trey.

I know a lot of people on this board are young, but let me explain this to you. Most people don't know how Radiohead is. The median age in this country is almost 37 years old. How many people over the age of 37 do you think know who Radiohead is?? Essentially none. About 20% of the peopulation is under 20. about 15% of the population is under 15. Essentially none of them know who Radiohead is. That right there is 65% that don't know Radiohead. Maybe, maybe half of the people that are between 15 and 37 will know who Radiohead is. Half of our country is rural red states. Even that would still only amount to 30% of the population. To be honest I would guess that less then 10% of the population knows who Radiohead is. That is not an unreasonable statement.
You are the one that is living in a proverbial cave, if you think that the majority of people know a band that doesn't really get any play on commercial radio. Most of the country isn't like the people on this board.
Most of this country is poor. Very poor. Almost 60% of the population of our country will spend at least one year below the poverty line during their adult life. For a family of 4 the poverty line is $21,000. Do you really think that the majority of people care to spend time or money to listen to Radiohead? (at any given time about 20% of our population is below the poverty line). The majority of our country lives in abject poverty worrying about paying for their food and housing and transportation.
I work in a very impoverished area providing medical care in an under-served rural area. I have lived in some of the largest cities in the country and some of the poorest. I don't live in a cave. You don't know me. Please don't insult me.
Most people don't know who Radiohead is. I can guarantee that.

While I can appreciate your statistical analysis of the situation I must say those are some pretty outrageous assumptions you've made there. Especially when you get to the "Essentially none" part.

As someone who likes Radiohead and is of the belief that, having read some of your posts, you're not a complete idiot, I'll make this brief.
STOP ACTING LIKE A DOUCHETARD AND PRACTICE WHAT YOU'RE PREACHING.
There, now have a nice evening and hope you stick around the boards.
