While I agree this video is lame both the dancing and this particular song I would not go as far to say that he has turned everything into easy-listening tunes. I HAVE this exact show (audio) and indeed it is NOT the Talking heads but it certainly is representative of Byrne and in no way easy-listening
How can you not like "I Feel My Stuff"? Sure, it takes a bit ta really get goin', but once it hits it's stride...MAN!
I think how this tour is being billed is subject to interpretation:
"David Byrne comes to raise the hair on your arms and the sweat on your palms. Eno and Byrne have made a new record, Everything that Happens will Happen Today, their first in 30 years—the formula was lost, but now it has been found. Byrne and Eno began their artistic relationship in the late seventies with 3 Talking Heads albums, followed by their groundbreaking album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.
Songs from all of the above will be performed in this concert, but not in that order."
And hey, it's okay for people to be disappointed with a performance -- particularly if they expect an artist to sound exactly like he did 30 years ago, or expect cookie-cutter album versions of all of his songs -- but referring to David Byrne as a "freak old man" or the music he's playing as "elevator music" is a bit much. You aren't going to see the Talking Heads, you aren't going to get the Talking Heads.
BTW, the video posted is not at all indicative of the energy level at Byrne's shows, nor does it capture the audience joy spoken to in the reviews posted by brewboss.
edit: Strum, I'm seeing Byrne and DeVotchKa at Wolf Trap tomorrow night (and John Prine and Steve Earle there tonight)! Have a blast at Starscape!

i posted the youtube video to show the weirdo distracting dancers. the bad dancers. bad bad bad. and you're right, you can't expect exactly the talking heads...which is why i enjoyed the 04 show with the string quartet. this tour is uncomfortable, awkward, boring, and arty for the sake of being arty (see dancers in white.) beastie boys would be a better choice for a nostalgia act in that time slot.
I saw this show in Cleveland last fall from the second row...The dancers aren't my thing, but he is fantastic...you won't be dissapointed. I really wish the beastie boys wern't playing at the same time...decisons, decisions....

Yeah i'm splitting this set with the beasties. beasties from 8:30 to about 9:30ish and byrne from 9:30ish to 10:45... i'd rather see the first 1/2 of beasties and the last 1/2 of byrne according to the way their recent setlists have looked.

Just saw Byrne last night in Philly. It was absolutely great. That man is STILL a fantastic performer. I found a $25 ticket, on craigslist yesterday, and now I have no Beastie/Byrne conflict!!!!
AND i can see the last 30-45 minutes of Byrne's set too, which is great considering the second half of his set is LOADED with Talking Heads tunes.
Starscape tonight, Phish tomorrow, two days of "work," then off to ROO!!!!!!!!!
These two weeks are going to kill me, but what a wonderful way to die

BURNIN' DOWN THE HOUSE!
Any chance you (or someone else) can post a setlist from one of his recent shows?
oh right i forgot, and all the creativity in the last waltz came from Maritin Scorcese right?
at this point youre just trolling this thread stating your opinions on Byrne as fact
i never said my opinions are fact. except that you can't handle other people's opinions. now that's a fact.
Opinions are one thing, but throwing solely negative opinions around over and over is trolling. Your point was made long before your little "bad, bad, bad" rant. You don't like his new show it was boring to you, we get it.

Honestly. Go start your own, "I don't like new David Byrne" thread, and you can have an awesome conversation about how David Byrne is bad bad bad bad. Of course, you'll probably be talking to yourself, but you pretty much already are.

you guys are so uptight. how do you handle anything in life? i apologize if my opinions bother you, i thought this was the place to discuss how we felt about david byrne. i didn't attack anyone here personally. if you don't like dissenting opinion, don't go on the internet anymore.

I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
I was having a very, very hard time convincing my friends to not miss all of this show, last night...
I can just say, I hope that everyone knows the monumental mistake of missing David Byrne's set. It's going to be amazing... way more stimulating (to me) than the type of show you'd get from Beastie Boys.

Well, time for me to eat some serious crow... David Byrne mopped the floor with the Beastie Boys. I didn't know much of his non-Talking Heads stuff going in (still don't, really), but I loved every minute of his set.
Also, quite surprisingly, his performance had the best visual element of the entire weekend - the choreographed dancers and the solid white outfits were more impressive and entertaining than even the most intricate light show.

Ahhh I see......you have one of those uncanny abilities to be at two shows at once. Because the only reasonable way you would be able to compare the two shows would be after seeing both full sets and declaring which one "mopped the floor" with the other.
That's like the people who say "ahhh they sucked when I saw them live....I left after 10 minutes".

i figured this show would be good but i really found it outstanding. i felt he put a lot of thought and effort in and he seemed to enjoy being there. i found it fun and dancable and i really thought the music was great. i would road trip to see him again. im not a beastie boys fan....but im sure that show was fun for those who like them. i just have not listened to a lot of there stuff so i cant say.

I never said I saw both full sets - but I saw almost all of Beastie Boys (ducked out about ten minutes early to beat the huge crowd migration from What to Which) and the last hour or so of David Byrne. I think that's enough time spent at each to judge.
