Has anyone seen Seeking a Friend for the End of the World? It seems to be the only movie at the local Red Box that A)I haven't seen B)is on DVD C)doesn't look completely terrible.
yes i enjoyed it. somewhat unrealistic to have the two leads be romantically involved but they make it work.

Have you seen Safety Not Guaranteed? We got it from redbox a few weeks ago. Not the best movie ever, but it was definitely not terrible.

Haven't even heard of it, I'll have to check it out.
They ended up being out of Seeking a Friend so I got The Five Year Engagement. It was decent I guess. Pretty disappointing that a movie that's co-written by/starring Jason Segel and has Chris Pratt and Allison Brie is only okay. I guess there's a reason I didn't really hear much about it when it came out.

I finished Jeff Who Lives at Home last night. I really liked it. Loving Jason Segal and Ed Helms helps I'm sure. Probably one of the better Duplass brothers films I've seen in a while (Cyrus should have been better). Think this one just really reminded me of my brother and I. See it if you haven't.
Has anyone here watched The Snowtown Murders on Netflix? I was not prepared for how brutal it was, but man is it a well made film. It takes you to a dark place.
It definitely had dark undertones and a couple of really brutal scenes, and the reality behind it is horrifying, but I have to say that overall, I thought the movie was excruciatingly boring.
Has anyone else seen or heard of this movie? It completely blew my mind. One of the best documentaries I've seen.
It's a fascinating piece of true gonzo journalism. The film maker documents the process of buying diplomatic credentials so that he can smuggle diamonds out of Africa under diplomatic immunity (which apparently allot of ambassadors do). It's really amazing and troubling at the same time.
Add this to the pantheon of great gangster films! Though it's not traditional in the gangster film sense (read mafia or historically specific subgenre's) it does at many points feel like other grimy crime films from the past (Goodfella's comes to mind). I didn't exactly take the allegorical treatment of the US economic collapse fully (I felt a bit brow beaten by the attempts to make this work) as sometimes it just seems a little forced. Beyond that though KtS is a stellar film. Great writing, acting, violent moments (treated both bluntly and with beauty at times) and it has a nice flow overall.
Going to see Pulp Fiction when I get out of school today... also happens to be the last day that my dreadful hybrid literature class to meet, so should be a good one. I just hope there aren't people at this screening who feel the need to quote along with the movie like it's Rocky Horror or something.
^I still haven't seen that last JJ Abrams Star Trek flick... been hearing great things, I will need to check it out. I was a pretty big Star Trek and TNG fan when I was a kid, but right around the time I turned 10 got out of it.
Pulp Fiction was a blast to see on the screen... good audience, no quote happy dorks, though the turn out was significantly less than I had expected. I'm saying the theater was maybe half full... The movie never felt so short, to me, as it did tonight.

I am not a Star Trek fan, but the reboot is a great blockbuster. Like JJ, this one will probably top my list for Summer 2013.
I have to admit that I was only moderately taken with Martel's source material and thought that the praise heaped on the book was overblown. I kind of feel the same way about the film too. Ang Lee and his team do an impressive job, especially on a visual level, and Lee does enough to stray away from the source material and make this piece his own. What bothers me mostly with films like this though, this time of year, is that they are so over produced and melodramatic in hopes of bringing some hardware home during award season. This should be seen as no knock on Lee or the production house (that's what they are aiming for) but I just quickly tire of these big slabs of Oscar bait come December. Overall, very enjoyable in a Castaway meets Big Fish kind of way with visuals that are just about unrivaled this year thus far.

Same here....I knew some basics and seen some old movies but was never a big "fan" or watched the old shows or anything. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed the reboot movie and look forward to the next one.
Anyone feel comfortable enough to discuss their top movies of the year? I know there are still a good few to come out and not everyone has seen everything they want to (that's the thing about year end lists on movies... most people really can't be certain until at least a few months into the next year when things become easier to see), but as it stands, what have been your favorite movies this year?
I can say for certain that my top two my a landslide are The Master and Moonrise Kingdom. There are many others that I really enjoyed but those stood head and shoulders above whatever else I've seen.

I was thinking about it recently but I think I am a few screenings away from being able to commit to a concrete top 10.
I will likely put something together after Boxing Day. I'll agree with The Master, this will most definitely finish up in my top 5

Living in a foreign country limits what I get to see... but I can say a few that I have seen that will be in my top 10 no matter what.
Moonrise Kingdom Skyfall Argo Cabin in the Woods Looper
still need to see The Master, Killing Them Softly, Lincoln, and all the other oscar buzzers. Less than a week until The Hobbit!

I would love to, as well, but my movie watching in 2012 was not good. I'm interested in following this though so I can prioritize my rental watching.

So i haven't read all of the thread yet but who's excited for Les Mis? It's probably my favorite musical and Anne Hathaway's singing have me anticipating the actual release. Seriously, out of all the holiday releases this year (namely the Hobbit and Django Unchained which I'm excited for) this is probably at the top currently.
The new Kathryn Bigelow movie Zero Dark Thirty is taking all of the critics awards for Best Movie of the year, along with topping many critics top 10 lists. It also has a 100% on Rottentomatoes so far (out of 22 reviews).

Looper is playing at the dollar theater down the street from me, I may go check it out... have heard almost nothing but good to great things about it. Also, agree on Cabin In The Woods... I had high expectations and they were definitely exceeded. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the Avengers... my pick for best odd ball flick goes to The Comedy (never seen a movie that accomplished what that film did in tone, and this was solidified after watching it again with a non-Tim and Eric fan last night).
As hyped as I am about Django, Zero Dark Thirty is the movie I'm looking most forward to that is yet to come.
Someone mentioned Les Miserables, and I think I may go see it with the fams over x-mas break. Still NEED to see Lincoln... Skyfall will probably have to wait, as will Argo.
i saw a little blurb on les mis that makes it look better in my eyes....they did the singing live. instead of recording the songs before and then lip syncing, all the actors sang while filming to an accompanying keyboard and then they added the orchestra in later instead of the voices like normal. we will see how seriously i can take russel crowe as a musical star.
I've got to figure out how to hog tie the hubby to go with me to Les Miserables. He is adamant he is not going.
I am NOT a fan of musicals in general, but have a pretty deep level of appreciation for when they are well done (took a musical theater class in high school for a year... was more or less forced to form an appreciation or respect)... and this one has "quality" written all over it. I've seen some cheapo theater productions of it and one of the older film adaptations... it's definitely some of the best musical material that's been put out that I've seen. Plus, Hugh Jackman is a quacking triple threat, so to speak, when it comes to this type of thing.
