found this on another board..not sure about the validity..but i thought id throw it out there:
"Talks are in the works between town board directors and local authorities in Nassau County regarding a change of venue for the upcoming Long Island reunion of Vermont rock-band, Phish. Officials related to the situation tell Newsday that the scheduled concerts slated for June 4th and 5th at the Nikon Jones Beach Theatre are a "concern" for resident officials and feel by moving the concerts across counties to the nearby Nassau Coliseum would be a precautionary act.
Phish reunited this past weekend in Hampton Roads, VA, which drew roughly 75,000 loyal fans to the town's 13,000 seat arena. Known for their improv-rock and long four hour concerts, Phish fans usually reflect a party-type atmosphere. Reports from Hampton Roads indicate while the incident list from inside the actual arena was almost at zero, the outside perimeters were met with drug dealings, illegal vending, destroyed hotel properties and ticketless fans.
Officials worry that with the "open-air" setup at Jones Beach, many fans will show up to the show without a ticket in hand, knowing the music can be heard well and loud from the surrounding beach and parking lot areas. It is not unusual at a Phish concert to find many fans choosing to dance in the concourse of a venue rather than in view of the stage itself. Jones Beach also allows boats to "pull-up" to a perimeter marked in the water which leads to the venue, where the on-board may park and listen to the show from there. Many expect these issues could be a concern should the two sold-out shows draw more than capacity and force people to consider other options to hear the band kick-off there first Summer Tour since 2004.
Should agreements be met, band management tells Newsday that all current ticket holders will be able to use their current tickets for the re-located shows and that an additional 5,000 tickets per night will be sold at the venue box office on a first come, first serve basis due to the increased venue size. The concert would be a General Admission event. Phish has not played at the Jones Beach Theatre since July of 1995 when they were later considered to have outgrown the venue's small capacity size. Phish has played at the Nassau Coliseum six times since April of 1998."

What they should do is move it to PNC in Jersey. Better amphitheatre, you can rock out on the lawn, and there's no ridiculous no-alcohol policy, like there is at Jones Beach.
6/18: Phish in Hartford 6/25: Phish in Camden 7/2-7/4: Nateva 7/17: God Street Wine at Irving Plaza 7/23-7/25: String Cheese at Red Rocks!! 8/17-8/18: Phish at Jones Beach 9/3: Rush at PNC
This Bonnaroo lineup is in dire need of some Rush.

What they should do is have a concert at my house. I have a pretty large back yard!
just wondering what rock youve been living under for the last 5 years?
lol jk. you should go to livephish.com and download the hampton sets though. youll be that much more excited to see them if you listen to the shows leading up to when you see them. And youll know what to expect, and also you will realize when you have been hit by something they dont usually do (which is pretty likely considering theyre playing Bonnaroo)
I've been living under the ipod rock (only listen to what I download)!!
And why should I listen to the Hampton sets??? That seems like it would fall under the friend getting you to listen to new music. Is the music in some type of order that you need to listen to previous sets to get the current one???
Seems like that would spoil that magic for me??? Seems like the magic is not knowing what to expect?!
And to correct myself- I think I have heard of Phish but just discounted them because I never heard them.
Let me ask a favor- Describe the first time you heard phish and what you thought of them and their music.
I honestly cant really remember the first time i heard Phish. I think i just downloaded a bunch of songs and made a mixed CD inluding Wading in the velvet sea, bouncing around the room, fee, farmhouse, dirt, heavy things, and a corn song hehe
and i think you could listen to every Phish show ever and you will still not know what to expect at Bonnaroo. Plus i really dont get the whole thought process of "if i know the music already i wont like the show as much"...
You should listen to the Hampton sets because its the first time theyve played in 5 years and it is going to sound different from when they were in college, or in the mid 90s, or coventry.

I'll be honest... the first time I heard Phish that I recall was from a good friend who's all about 'em. I downloaded a few shows that were sent my way and thought to myself "ehh... these guys are talented, but I don't get what the whole fuss is about over them..."
Then I started getting some of their more acclaimed shows, such as when they covered Dark Side of the Moon, and other various shows. For some reason, hearing them cover other musicians made me see the genius behind their own music and talent. I grabbed more and more shows offline and started becoming a pretty big fan... I knew they were on to something that not many other bands have ever been capable of going (That I know of, atleast)
And well, then I saw them in Hampton for the first time and I will tell you that from that moment on I don't think I could ever miss an opportunity to see this band again. There's just something unexplainable about the whole experience.
So, I guess following my progression you could very easily skip those first two steps and jump right into obsession... but I must say that part of the experience is being able to sing along to some of their songs like Bathtub Gin, Wading in the Velvet Sea, and Wilson.... to name a few.
Let me ask a favor- Describe the first time you heard phish and what you thought of them and their music.
I first heard them in 90 or 91, Lawn Boy had recently been released, and I didn't like them. Then I sort of ignored them until my first show in 94. After that I started really listening to them.
But getting to know their songs before you see them won't ruin your experience at your first show or spoil the surprise or anything like that.
my first time was round the release of rift. my friends were obsessed with 'lengthwise' and i thought it was hilarious, so i checked it out. For lack of better term, I was hooked. Its all been down hill ever since. (and I wouldn't have it any other way.)
There's not a thing worth remembering When tomorrow can bring someone new Get used to the thought You can't be what you're not Life has already got plans for you
First Tube at the Hamptons is the first thing i watch in the morning. Am i dreaming or are we really getting two nights of this band at the greatest festival in the world!
Just listened to an entire Phish album and cannot say I enjoyed it
Its ok Im struggling with it too...There are some parts that I enjoy, but most of it bores me and the lyrics are horrible...sorry please keep the smiting to yourself. Im still gonna give their live show a chance since everyone tells me thats where its at. Im not ruling them out just yet tho

Have you guys listened to any of their live shows? You can download the Hampton show for free at livephish.com, it's good. I wouldn't recommend trying to get into a jam band by listening to their studio albums. It's like the Grateful Dead, you give people shows to listen to, not their albums.

yeah the lyrics are not what makes Phish great. Nor are the albums. It's all about the live shows... The jams and the experience! If anybody wants a recording or recommendation on a live show just ask.
But honestly it just won't be for everyone. You can sort of get the idea of what they're like from some of their albums, so if you're completely turned off then that's what it is. I don't know of any band which everyone likes, and I'm pretty sure that's because one doesn't exist
actually... you can't anymore. The free downloads ended a bit over an hour ago. But if anybody wants them...
Wow, awesome, excellent drunk late-night download on my part last night!
I like the lyrics though, I think that's part of the charm, they're so goofy. Seems intentional to me, which makes it ok. But I'd be a shitty music critic, I can listen to just about anything and like it at least a little bit.

at least you gave them a shot.
as far as the first time I heard Phish goes.. I was 12 years old, and my brother got me into them. He went to his first show and came home real late and woke me up to listen to them. He had a tape that someone had given him in the lot.
At first, I wasn't clear what the fuss was about, that is until I heard the first jam on the tape. Stash I believe it was. Instantly hooked. After that, my brother would go off on tours and bring home all sorts of stuff for me.. posters, tapes, shirts, etc...this went on for three years.. then, on Christmas eve of '96, he gave me a ticket to the new years eve show, and took me to go see them for the first time.

Yes I listened to 2 of the Hampton shows....Ill try the third when I get home. At one point I was so bored with it I forgot it was even playing
Like I said Im still not writing them completely off..I will see them at least Friday night at Roo. Maybe Ill come back a fan. Im still gonna attempt some more live recordings and try to find something that peaks my interest
Plus i really dont get the whole thought process of "if i know the music already i wont like the show as much"...
It's not that I won't like the show as much- just that there is something very special and magical about hearing a band live with no expectations or idea of what could happen next- where every rift is a gift and every bridge is unexpected.
what album are you guys listening to? i know my girlfriend gets bored with some of there long drawn out jams so maybe try listening to lawn boy or something? there's some really good songs on there and the jams are cut short. also for some reason she likes Trey solo kind of better than Phish. don't ask me why. maybe it's the more intricate melodies in the jams that keeps her interested. she also has a thing for Page's voice. lol
