Ok well my first exposure to Phish was one of their live shows in 1987 (4-29-87 to be exact). Visiting a friend at College he said "man you got to check out this band" so I went with him to Nectars. I remember being pretty impressed and knowing like every cover they did and was esp. impressed with Peaches as I have been a Zappa freak since I was 12 years old. Enjoyed it enough to head to Ian's farm that summer for a free show (or if it wasn't free I didn't pay) and had a blast. At this time I was heavily embedded in the Dead and doing lots of tour and while I enjoyed Phish enough they did not grab me like the Dead.
Saw Phish again in 1990 at the Wetlands in NYC by this time I knew a bunch of their tunes but still not a huge fan. Now 1990 for me was a huge year for seeing the Dead I think I saw like 45 shows including doing the whole Europe tour but '90 was also kind of feeling like a last hurrah as well with Brent dying and the scene going a bit downhill. I still did Dead shows up until the end but less frequent than I did from 84-90. A scattering of Phish shows were thrown in between 90-94 and looking back there were some real nice ones but at the time I was still not totally hooked in. I had actually focused and went to Culinary school (92-94) and that prevented me from doing any touring but still saw a good bunch of local NY Dead and a few Phish shows.
By now, Oct. '94, graduated school, moved to SF, CA, to the Haight, in fact catercorner to the infamous Dead house, lovin' life, Aug. '95 JERRY DIES !!! DEVESTATION !! A gap is left that needs to be filled and Phish was there to do so. I suppose in many ways this kind of happened to alot of heads. At this point I was familiar with most of their (Phish's) songs and had had a bunch of cd's for years and probably had seen them like 12-15 times but the Dead were still my main focus even though I was doing far less shows than previous years. So anyway to try and now shorten my already too long story, if anyone is still reading basically I have now seen about 70 Phish shows including The Great Went, Lemonwheel, Cypress, and soon to be '09 'Roo.
The transition was kind of long and gradual. Always had an appreciation for them and underlying love, I guess, but it took a number of years for it to blossom. On many levels they will never hold as big a place in my heart as does the Dead .....but at the same time they have.... and will again. At times they have taken me in deeper than the Dead but once again I have to say on a different level. Love them both but they are not the same and not even really as similar as they are made out to be. Finally about to listen to the last night Hampton set two set been busy at work Peace to all
I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name right---P.T. Barnum "As I was walking up the stairs I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish to God he'd go away."
^I found a pretty good audience recording. I'm not too clear on the ABB sharing policy so I don't want to post the link. PM me.
Allmans are NOT cool with the sharing of files by internet studio or live and most sites I am familair with do not have Allmans boots on them. That said would love this show and am going to PM you brother if I do not find this myself.

I've listened to the Hampton run about 1.5 times now, and I'm just starting my second straight through listen.
These are great sets that I will listen to a lot, but re-listening to the first set, I'm struck by the fact that they didn't quite live up to the potential that I felt from these first few songs. I think the first half of set I Friday night is definitely one of the highlights of the weekend. From the ridiculous song selection of the first few songs through the funk infusion from Page in Suzy, it just seems like the sky's the limit.
There is definitely some great stuff throughout the weekend, with the last set probably being the best one, but I am struck by the sheer quantity of songs in every single set and the lack of a truly exploratory set. Even a Twist>2001>Moma feels a little "scripted".
Anyway, Hampton was from any perspective an amazing kickoff to Phish 3.0 and extremely promising. Just sharing some thoughts as the beer starts to flow.....
i think the weekend was a great kickoff point for 3.0. they were definitely laying the groundwork for the future of Phish as Trey said. i think they were trying to fulfill everyone's wishes by playing so many songs as well as i think they just had to get it all out at the same time. it's almost like going without sex for like 4 years and then bang you wind up having a wild 3 night weekend romp. they definitely blew there load that weekend. i also believe that they were testing songs for the summer tour. trying to see what was working and what wasn't. you have to remember these guys are all completely different musicians than they were 4 years ago. and i do agree with you the first few songs were amazing. they were fluently and exquisitely pulled off and gave that crowd and the world what they wanted as well as themselves. that being said i think these guys are really gonna put on some great shows this summer. can't believe i'm gonna be apart of it! can't wait til June!!!!!!

Let me ask a favor- Describe the first time you heard phish and what you thought of them and their music.
GREAT QUESTION. I remember thinking how discordant Phish sounded. I listened to Lawn Boy a lot and how some of the songs I loved, but some of them really grated on me. Then I saw them on the H.O.R.D.E. tour in the summer of '91 or '92. They completely stole the show from the much bigger bands at the time like Blues Traveler. I was amazed at how good they were. That show hooked me and they kept me as my favorite band for nearly a decade (b/f I finally backed off in 2000/2001).

The first time I heard Phish, I was watching some MTV variety program called "Hangin' with MTV" and they had some wacky house band that was jumping on trampolines. It didn't really resonate at the time, because I listened to grunge pretty exclusively (I was 15). I saw a lot of shows in high school, bands like NIN, Radiohead (saw them in very small clubs), Smashing Pumpkins (favorite band in High School), and Pearl Jam. I remember making fun of the kids in school who bragged about going to the Omni on Halloween in 1994 (doh!). It wasn't until 1996 that they were given a fair shot.
I had heard Free on mainstream alternative radio (99x). I had to call the station to find out who it was... PHISH? So I bought Billy Breaths. I loved it, but I had to hide it from my friends, as they would have made fun of me. Fast forward one year when my friend's college friends convinced him to begin eating corn and listening to Phish on long drives. Over the course of several visits to his campus, I was exposed to various Phish. It was Rift, Junta, and Lawnboy that really grabbed me. I immediately went out and bought all of their albums. I saw my first show at Lakewood in 97, second show in Winston Salem that fall, 3rd show was again at Lakewood, 4th show Lemonwheel (25 hour drive, no stopping other than food and bathroom), then the "touring" began.
I've only seen them 22 times, 6 times since Big Cypress. I just saw the Hampton shows and everyone should be VERY excited for the Summer. I think Bonnaroo is going to be the show to see this tour and I'm very glad I bought the early bird tickets based on a rumor.
the long and the short of this discussion is that there are some things that you will get when you see Phish live that you will NEVER SEE OR HEAR OR EXPERIENCE on tape.
examples: 1. YEM Trampoline section 2. Shouting WILSON with everyone else in the venue and feeling it 3. PYITE salsa dance 4. GUELAH dance (yes they've been doing that for a long damn time) 5. The DIVIDED SKY pause 6. The 3 clap segement in STASH 7. BATHTUB GIN, "we love to take a bath" 8. The lights during a nighttime MAZE
and soo many more. the best part of all of this? These guys are 43-45 years old and they are still as silly as ever and there is no sign of them slowing down.

Anyone listen to the Live Phish Radio? Its pretty awesome. It pulled up in my itunes and it runs non-stop, no commercial Phish jams. I forgot to say that it is all Live shows and is up-to-date with the most recent shows.
