amazing. bruce murdering the show? not at all. just watching Trey and Bruce is something i will remember for the rest of my life and im sorry for anyone who couldnt appreciate it for what it was.
Bruce came dangerously close to murdering a Phish show. Mustang Sally was pretty good, no doubt about that... but the 2nd song of the Bruce + Phish segment was probably the worst thing I heard on the farm all weekend. It completely sucked the life out of the crowd around me. Everyone was standing still, a few of them were sitting down packing bowls cause there wasn't anything else worth doing. The 3rd song they did was saved when Trey took control over Bruce and just kept raging a solo.
Bruce gets the goat award for Roo '09 for his shout "Play it... Mr. Keyboard Player!!" Puhlease... atleast know who you're playing with. That's worse than Sting thinking he was in Bonnaroo, TN
And Knoxville totally raged 1000x harder than either of the two shows Phish did on the farm. I think I would've been left just slightly disappointed if I hadn't been to Knox on Wednesday. That was the show to see!
The Mr Keyboard player thing was just a line from the original it is not like they have a sax player in Phish. I thought both shows were pretty amazing, if you wanted to go up front and rage you could, and if not you could sit in the back and watch the kiddies at their first Phish show.
I am somewhere in my mid thirties for total number of shows so far, and I think they are as good as they have ever been. I heard great things about the knox show, but looking at the setlists many more of my favorite tunes were played at 'roo. My group had 4 of us who were the old heads and had caught a lot of shows, and pretty much all of us have been having our minds blown since tuesday. Personally I cant wait for the rest of my shows this summer, they are just getting better and better every night.

I thought Phish was phenomenal. Granted, this was my first time ever seeing them, and I expected them to be the best act on the farm...i was still REALLY, REALLY impressed. Those guys are just masters of their instruments, and they fit together so well, it was a beautiful thing to watch.
As for Bruce coming out...I agree that Bobby Jean kinda sucked the life out of the crowd...I was thinking...of all the songs they could have played, why this?? On the other hand, I thought Mustang Sally was GREAT, and Glory Days pretty good too--you could tell Trey was absolutely loving it, I found that to be really really cool. I always dig a show even more when I can tell the band is enjoying it as much (or more?) as i am.
The glowstick wars were insane, I thought, although I have never been in one of the magnitude. It seemed ridiculous on Sunday night though, that was truly bad ass. I'd like to know what some Phish vets thought about it, since I'm pretty new to monstrous glowstick wars.
All in all, i thought the sound was great, song selection was great, Bonnaroo was a great place for them to be. I feel really lucky to have seen them, and looking forward to catching them at Alpine and Toyota park.
“Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn't the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?” -Bill Hicks
Also a question for the haters, what was so bad about Bobby Jean? I was grooving at it on the farm, and then listening to it this morning after everyone crapped on it, and I can't find anything to complain about it. Good song.
The 1st set up to that point was an absolute MONSTER. I thought we were in for one of the greatest shows of all time as Antelope was winding down. Then Bruce comes out and at first I appreciated it for the fact that we all know Trey was essentially having a wet dream on stage playing with one of his idols. Mustang Sally was a great choice of songs for them to play. Everyone knows the song and it's just an all around badass song. I really don't know the song Bobby Jean. Obviously I don't since I didn't catch the "mr. saxophone player" reference. It wasn't a Phish show for me anymore at that point in the song though. I feel like collaborations should add something to a show, not take it away. Bobby Jean took away everything that I loved about the 1st set thus far. There was no dancing, there were no glowsticks, there was no Mike Gordon's bone-rattling bass. There was nothing except Bruce it seemed, and that's not what I waited all day for.
For the record, I didn't hate the Roo shows at all. They were both good in their own right. All I'm saying is that I'm very glad that I went to Knoxville

obviously you and the people around you have no idea what good music and appreciation of music is. Now I don't mean to say that these shows were the best or even all that incredible and they certainly were not necessarily "one for the history books"or earth shattering in any way. On the other hand there were some incredible moments but I digress.... First of all Mustang Sally like you say was fine but the next song Bruce doing an obscure one of his songs with Phish as his backing band was pretty enlightening for me. I mean, shit, did you see the look on Trey's face while he was playing he was in heaven. I am not saying I love the song (didn't know it at the time) but I was turned on by how happy Trey was to be playing with one of his big influences. If, so called, phans can't appreciate that then all the things that are said about elitist fans are true. My personal opinion is that these were probably younger fans who just don't get what music is all about. And lastly, the third song, Glory Days...I hate the song and always have and think it was incredibly lame for them to do it AGAIN with all the other songs they could have done covers of or even just a better one of Bruce's songs. What about a Blinded by the light? Now that could have been cool but to cheese out with Glory days AGAIN was more than weak yeah sure it was made better by Trey taking over the guitar work but seriously.....overall......lame

awesome post. i really can't believe ANYONE had a problem with Bruce sitting in with Phish. I mean.....Trey was insanely happy to do it and i'm sure the rest of the band was too. They created a historic moment at Roo being the first headliners to share the stage (If i'm wrong please correct me....I don't know if it's happened in the past.)
I was tired by that point on sunday....but hearing and seeing Bruce come out for that once in a lifetime experience was something quite special to me. and I'm not a huge bruce fan......just glad to be a part of bonnaroo history.
Friday was a heavy hitter marathon, filled with songs that all the fans around me were wishing for prior to the set. The choice for covers was perfect for the slots in the set they were in. I started duckwalking on highway to hell and I lost what little I had left of my mind.
What a way to end the show with YEM > Wilson > YEM and then the Day in the Life encore. I actually wished there was a setbreak. The only energy I had after that was to find something to eat in the campgrounds and then crash.
Sunday was awesome. A lot of folks on the Internet have been bitching about the Bruce appearance and the setlist, but they obviously were not there. The crowd went nuts, who needs a superjam when you've got Bruce Springsteen and the Phish Market Band ? Other than Bruce, it was a show with some great funky jams, and I couldn't believe how many people were still there Sunday night compared to WSP from last year.
Yeah Sunday did not suck at all but it also was not very funky. Fri. was FUNK night Sun. was Trey the rock star night plain and simple. Really aside from Tweezer on Sun. there was not any other funkyness at all (aside from the shit in most people's pipes ) Jams..oh yeah..really really big ones Trey went off in his big rock star mode, which is perfectly fine, and showed us that he can still shred it up better than most. As for Funk the prize goes to Fri. night lots of good funkyness in there.
So Jugg we got the inevitable Character Zero at least they held off the meatstick. As usual at least the jam at the end of CZ was pretty monsterous.

First Phish shows and I'm not a fan, but have listened a bit in preparation. My opinions: Friday was solid - about what I was expecting. Wasn't blown away, but wasn't bored.
Sunday was great. First set was included a bunch of stuff I knew, and Springsteen coming out was incredible. I was hoping/pratying for them to do Kitty's Back (tough with no sax, but possible). Mustang Sally was great. Bobby Jean sucked. Glory Days would have blown the roof off if there was one (even though it was played the night before). Disappointed that Bruce felt the need to bash everyone over the head with the cheesy 80s stuff instead of pulling out some of the gems from the 70s - but I'm assuming it was Trey's call for the most part.
Phish's second set on Sunday was impressive - some intense jams in there, and I totally appreciate what they're doing. But that kind of stuff is why I don't like Phish...I chilled at the back for the second set and enjoyed my last few minutes of my first roo

It's funny you said the 2nd song was a Bruce song, because the whole time it was being played I was thinking how "Bruce-y" it felt. I know it was a dream come true for Trey, and maybe even for the rest of the band too. But just because it was a nostalgic moment for them all doesn't mean it has to be good music. You just said yourself the 3rd song they played together sucked. Apparently you don't know good music either then? Or do I just get that award for thinking Bobby Jean sucked?
Personally, this makes me positively giddy and I am surprised to see some people didn't think much of it. I thought this was fun as hell and this (very steadily shot) youtube takes me right back. It was a highlight of the weekend for me and something that is up there for one of the more memorable moments of the six Bonnaroos I've been to. For the record, I am not a huge Bruce fan, but I do think Glory Days is a good song.

I missed Bruce's show my only comment all weekend was that I wanted to have seen Glory Days. I think I liked the version I heard better than the Sat version.

yeah i thought the bruce part was great, too.. i don't know why so many people were complaining about it! does anyone know if this part of the set will be shown when they air it on tv this weekend?
Well to me so far on tour Friday has been the best just three straight up hours of awesomeness late night at my favorite place on earth. We shall see what I think after the rest of this week though, Deer Creek might well be beyond epicness.
I dug both shows a lot and I was definitely not a fan going in. I finally get all the hype! Sadly, I'm also finally starting to get why people find some of their fans obnoxious after reading some of these comments. Be grateful you were there to witness history!

for starters...i am somewhat new to phish as far as really getting into them. after all the hype, i was so worried i wouldn't "get it" the way some of my friends do. friday was good, and i enjoyed it and had fun. but sunday...holy crap. the whole feel of the show was 10x better for me than friday. even the lights seemed more intense.
all in all, sunday was a seriously religious experience for me. i was standing in a field at bonnaroo feeling absolutely weightless. i couldn't feel my feet or my hands. it was a feeling of complete freedom and happiness.
i just picked up my tickets for SPAC, and i'll be headed to the chicago show as well. i'm so absolutely excited to be seeing them so much this summer.
as for bruce, well, i felt it was a pretty anti-climatic ending to the set. i mean, cool that trey was happy and all that, but it took the wind out of my sails a bit. i just cannot get into bruce. i don't think he sucks, and i'm not hating, but every time i see or hear him, i just giggle to myself because it reminds me of my dad trying to be a rock star. however, it didn't ruin the show for me or anything, and i still think sunday was the best of the two shows.

If your dad can play the telecaster like Bruce, have the on stage presence of a man half his age, and also write some of the best songs of the last 50 years than yea I could see this.

Phish boards are notoriously negative and full of haters. Believe what you read with a grain of salt, though there are some very good posters too. Best phish blog by far, though a little fluffy, is Mr Miner's: www.phishthoughts.com
I've already been posting this elsewhere, but as a long time vet, Friday was a let down for me personally. They played well, there were some choice moments (Kill Devel Falls jam, DVD jam, 2001, Highway to Hell, and the audience getting Trey to do YEM>Wilson>YEM). The setlist felt forced, and was obviously aimed at novices and casual listeners (welcome! I'm glad you all came and hope you had a blast). Please don't take this as a complaint, because it's not -Friday was a good show.
In hindsight I realize my own expectations for Friday were off the charts, especially since I had seen the last 3 shows, all of which were excellent: Camden, Asheville, and Knoxville. And if you thought Friday was great, that's cool too. I am not trying to sling insults or come across as better than anyone else, noob or otherwise.
Sunday, however, was simply awesome, imho. I was in the left side orchestra pit, and from AC/DC Bag thru the last song, Tweezer Reprise, I was dialed in perfectly with the band. The main stage sound system was the BEST I'd heard in years, and from the pit on Sunday night the sound quality was beyond words :-)
I have never been a Bruce fan, but his Saturday show blew me away (what a noob I am :-). I never thought he'd show on Sunday, but when Trey told his story about seeing his first and best concert at age 12 (Bruce), and that his boyhood hero was now going to play before us all, I was completely floored. Bruce's performance with the band is probably the best and most successful guest appearance I've seen with Phish, and Trey looked soooo incredibly ecstatic. I will NEVER forget that experience, ever. Roo 09 had already been more than amazing, and then the Boss & Phish made it even more special. WOW!
Sunday set II contained my favorite song/jam sequence of Phish's tour thus far: Rock n Roll>Light>46 Days, not to mention Backwards Down the Number Line and a tight Suzy Greenberg and explosive First Tube. I also really dug the 'less popular among certain phans' placement of Farmhouse and Prince Caspian.
I am still glowing from that Sunday night Phish show, not to mention the overall Roo 2009 and preceding Phish shows (phenway, camden>knoxville).
Phish went huge at the roo and more than proved its status as two-show roo headliners, both on Friday and Sunday (watching the Boss watch Trey was priceless). I loved one reviewer that said how effortlessly Phish was able to put on a 3 hour performance, something most bands would struggle to do (Spin Magazine?)
Roo '09 was amazing all around: great music, great vibe, great people -thank you all.
Amazing: Phish, Bruce, Amadou & Mariam, Vieux Farke Toure, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Wilco, NIN Good to great: Animal Collective, NIN, Jimmy Buffet, King Sunny Ade, Tobacco, MGMT, Passion Pit, Kraak & Smack Glad to have seen: Oakenfold, Grizzly Bear, Beastie Boys, of Montreal, Snoop Dogg

why is it that some of you can't grasp that not EVERYONE is going to love the same music you do? i flat out said i wasn't hating, and that i didn't think he wasn't talented. i just don't get into his music. i think it's cheesy and it's not my thing. i'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but you can cut out that whole condescending tone next time you feel like responding to me.
