Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.
Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."
They sound similar, but I don't know if he really would have much of a case. Now if Coldplay wanted to sue themselves they would def have a case. Cause that song sounds like just about every other Coldplay song I've ever heard

I don't have any jokes.
But I gotta say Joe just might have a case here. It's not just the changes that are identical. The melodic hooks are very close as well. I still doubt he gets a slice of the pie.

I remember this came up over the summer, and back then Satirani didn't really sell me on the charges because he alleged that Coldplay had attended one of his shows before coming out with their packaged fluff, but the timeline he gave didn't really make sense because of the band's schedule around the time that the album was produced. I myself have soured on Coldplay, so I would take a bit of satisfaction in the charges being true, however I don't find all of the evidence fits together, apart from the similarities between two crappy songs.

Well I have never liked/listened to either band. They are similar but honestly most pop music sounds similar to me. Also I kind of feel like I have heard that same chord progression melody in a 80's band somewhere I just cant place it. Early U2 or something like that maybe.
It could be coincidental or unintentional. I've never believed George Harrison realised he was ripping off the song "He's so Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord". I've sat with my guitar and pluncked out a melody or chord progression that I thought was my own, only to realise later it had already been written.
Coldplay should just settle the suit because the similarities are way to apparent. They could have kept it quiet with little damage to their reputation.
