Anyone feel like changing to a different argument?
Anyone have any ideas on a bailout for the auto companies?
I see two issues.
One, if the auto companies fail.. lots of people, LOTS of people, lose their jobs. Thats bad.
Two, the auto companies are failing because they've been pushing and pushing these gas guzzlers for far too long and people, esp the younger generation, are opting for more fuel efficient vehicles. Its their own damn fault that they are failing.
So, do we "reward" them for failure and save the jobs, or do we let them fail(because its their fault).
I'd say we do need to save the jobs, but fire EVERYONE on the top teir of the companies. Sorry, you farked up, no golden parachute for you, bye bye. The companies have to retool and actually innovate.
I find it pretty disgusting though that SUV sales are going back up a bit now that the gas prices have gone down. Does the average American have the attention span of a fruit fly?

ok i've stayed out of political threads for a reason.. all i can say is that we will have to wait and see what obama does to or for this country keep in mind he is a politician and they have been known to tell a fib or two everything is not always as it seems i work for a municipality and only get a 2%raise every FIVE years the mayor of the city i work for has stated several times over the last couple of years when asked about giving city employees cost of living increase and and annual raises that he does not see a reason why he should and that if they(city employees) don't like what they are paid them fuck em he can find another warm body to fill the spot... and them ok's a raise brought by board of aldermen for himself and the higher ups... board of aldermen is split parties .. i make right at the top of the poverty level i think the taxes should be based on what you make.. i think the millionares should pay more on taxes billionares should pay at least 2 million a year in taxes if not more... i think the able body folks that milk the system should get off thier lazy asses and get to work... there was a man here in mississippi that got welfare and food stamps for his 15 kids drove brand new pick up trucks and had 2 houses...when investigated it turned out that of the 15 kids only 2 were human and the rest were his hunting dogs... our system of government is failing us... and will continue to do so...america has gone to shit since the mob quit running the country.... and that ended when J.F.K was assasinated... and if you think about it the world is in the shape it's in today because of rich assed white people...all white folks should think about this i'm not a democrat i think we all just need to sit back ab=nd see what the man can do everything everyone is saying now is the same things that were said about reagan when he was elected...
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo

Streetbum: I don't mean to put you in a tight spot. And I do appreciate you sharing your opinion on the subject because you do bring up valid points.
It just bothers me when people treat issues like they're black and white. Right or wrong. Its really just one big gray clusterfuck.
I agree with wooz about the bailout for the auto industry. Now everyone is looking for a handout. Forget about people on welfare, now we're talking CEO's. American auto makers, American Express, AIG, all asking for handouts.
As much as it pains me to say - but I don't think we should bail them out. I know there would be ginormous ramifications if they are not bailed out - but they dug this hole for themselves. in this situations - there is no "perfect" answer - no matter what happens - there are going to be alot of people that lose jobs and benefits and that really sucks.

Reagan bailed out many of the auto industries just not at this level. Most of them gave us a thanky you by moving their industry to Mexico. IF a bailout is needed it should have a hick of a lot of strings on it. That would go with any company. Look what AIG did when we bailed them out. Their should be an oversite commision. If the company wants to be bailed out then they should give away many of their rights they enjoy to be overlooked by the commission. Kind of like probation for corparate america
Yeah, the progressive tax system is some crazy socialist scam! What the hell are you people talking about? The Robber Barons haven't ever gone away, folks. Teddy Roosevelt was right and the concept has remained right for nearly 100 years. Every election this comes up. Desperation leads to name calling.

I was just going to ask "Who is actually going to hire the bum?" I can't believe in this place of all places that I am seeing such blanket statements about people. I would gladly take a little Socialism in my government. I would happily pay a higher tax rate if every person in this country had health care, if they were all guaranteed four years of college, if our bridges and roads wouldn't fall down and crumble under us. But we're not talking about Socialism. We're talking about the have's actually giving a little to the have-not's. What I always find most intriging is the one's who scream "You're not getting my money" also tend to call themselves Christians. Huh, go figure.

I am not sure why you had to bring the whole Christian thing into it. I am a Christian - I believe in God and I believe that God gave us all brains and the ability to work for a living. I work - I pay my bills - I keep a roof over my head. When I go to church, I tithe - that is what is expected - I donate to Goodwill, the veterans, Salvation Army. But I WORK for my money and that is the point of it all.
I know we can go round and round about this - yes - there are some people onpublic assistance that truly need it - BUT the majority (at least in Mississippi) don't NEED it - they just don't want to flip burgers (and they would not have to if they had stayed their asses in school and gotten an education instead of running the streets trying to act grown at age 13).
It's pretty simple:
I realize I pay taxes and that already goes to social programs I realize that this tax plan will prolly mean I have more money Who is the one that got to decide what the cut off is? I mean who decided that $250,000 was being rich? I'm sorry - and you can look at my earlier posts and see my arguement for this.
The people I know that are making between $200-300k worked their ass off to get where they are - they have kids, they are struggling - maybe not like a good majority of us - but they still struggle - they are the ones that are already donating to charitys and gicing thier time. Raise their taxes - there goes a bunch of donations because they don't have the discretionary income anymore.
You also have to factor in the cost of living with what people are making.
The house I live in in Mississippi would cost 5 times as much to buy in Arizona. How do I know? Because my brother lives in Arizona and his house is the same basic square footage of mine. and was actually 5 1/2 times the cost of mine. It costs him more for groceries, more for household items.
So - yes - he should be making more money - but now he is going to be punished for making that money.
I realize the tax plan is gonna happen - fine - I just think the threshold should be set higher.
My point about Christianity is that I think it has something to do with the meek inheriting the Earth, turning the other cheek, things like that. I could post the whole sermon on the mound, but everybody do a little research if you're interested. I'm saying we claim to be Christians, but a majority of Americans certainly don't follow the dogma. I don't include you in that poll, Meg, because I don't know you, and you sound like a caring person with a lot of conviction and principle. And these people who are "suffering" when they make $250K + each year?!? Maybe they should sell the SUV and drop the 3000 channels of cable TV. I just don't buy that anybody making that much money is suffering. If they are, I bet they brought it on themselves...which makes them so similar to the poor folk who "brought it on themselves". And now we have come full circle.
What do you think the threshold should be then? +$250k represents the top 2% of Americans. And if you look up further, those making $226,919-$603,402 only have a tax increase of $121. Which really isn't much of an increase at all. Those making $603,403-$2.87 million get a $93,709 tax increase and those making $2.87 million-plus get $542,882 tax increase.
While the increase may seem steep for those higher brackets, you have to take into account that in 2001 Bush gave those people a tax CUT for the same amount. So under the new plan, they'd be paying the same as they did under Clinton.

If your household makes over $250K per year, and you are "struggling" to get by - then you are doing it wrong. Most folks live in a way that relates to their level of income, although some people are not satisfied by that and live above what their salary allows. Which is essentially, the core of the housing market collapse. Well, that and banks enabling those people to actually get a loan.
So I understand how someone with that much cash can be in a bad situation, but it is really their own fault.
^^^i dont know where you get your info, but im positive that 95% of Americans dont pay taxes (with the exception of the taxes everyone pays for goods--food, clothing, cars, etc)...on the contrary, a high percentage actually receive reimbursement checks when it comes tax season time
This has stuck in my head since yesterday and I had to say something.
The checks people get are refund checks. Which means that you have been giving the government an interest-free loan over the past year. So while it seems like free money, it really isn't.
And actually, the best thing is to set aside the proper amount every quarter in an interest-bearing account of some sort and then owe taxes come April.
(of course, I say this as someone who looks forward to her refund check every year. I know what I SHOULD do, I just don't do it )
^^^so those who earn their money are not allowed to spend it as they please? Why should they limit their lifestyle to help those who live above their means?
