Anyone who doesn't see why some people might not like glowstick wars has obviously never been hit in the face with a glowstick. Hey, I like watching it, but those things have to come down some time.
i have to wonder if anyone who doesn't like glowstick wars is truly is the right 'state of mind' to enjoy it. i've certainly been slammed in various places on my head by the hard plastic sticks...no pain no gain!
Is that all you care about xiphoid? Because thus far it seems that you want to trip out on glowsticks more than listen to the music. Which is completely retarded in my opinion. Have fun though.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

A live show means different things to different people.

I am a little confused by the tone of the majority of this thread - seems to me that the thread was started to ask which shows might be good for a glowstick war. Then it gets into whether you should throw then at a particular show or not because the band has said on a website that it does not want them thrown - it ultimately boils down to the fact that there will be people at the shows that have never been to that bands website, are not on this board, and will throw glowsticks if they want to.
The one show I am certain will be a GREAT glowstick war will be Flaming Lips - that is the show that I bought 500 glow rings for - and any other latenight shows that I end up at.
I'm not negative at all. I am just realistic. Its not like I see people with glownecklaces on at a show and I shun them. I just think its silly and if you need a glowstick to enhance your show then you might be at the wrong show.
I could not even possibly count the number of people and times I have seen someone not paying any attention at all to the music because they are so focused on glowsticks. Or the number of people/times I have seen someone just staring at the ground looking for one to pick up. Or saying excuse me or asking someone to move so they could pick one up. Its sad to me.
I dont think its that people NEED them to enhance the show........its something fun to do. If they arent paying attention to the music what's it bothering you? Im not being rude but there's hundreds of people walking around at any given time not paying attention to the music. Im sure theres the same amount of people saying excuse me when they have to cut through the crowd to leave or coming back from the bathroom. Im just not seeing what the big deal is. Theres alot going on in roo that I find silly or not my taste, but I wouldnt call it sad.
Tracers are more fun with a kick ass soundtrack to accompany them, just because someone isn't staring at the stage doesn't mean they are not paying attention to the music.
It would be cooler if everyone timed them to the cymbal crashes or when the chorus hits. Then you're interacting with the music!
What would be really cool is if some people had different colors and synchronized the color of the rings with the tone of the music. Low guitar chords - blue, high chords - green, cymbal crashes - pink.
My best ideas tend to be the hardest to work out, though...

actually, those who are really into glowsticks do exactly that man, and thats how you merge either your own individual light show or the crowd's glowstick war with the music...and when its done well, its amazing dude.
at moe.down last year, during the first set of the first night they were playing "Buster" (fantastic song, d/l and listen if you don't know it) and every time the lyric repeated where Rob says "Pig can fly" when he said 'fly' from like 3 different spots in the crowd this HUGE handful of glow rings would fly up, timed exactly to the word fly. it was beautiful dude, the perfect combination of visual effect with the music.
i'm not gonna debate the merits of glowsticks any more, those who get it, just get it. but on this issue, i actually agree with killface: playing with glowsticks and ignoring the music is a bit silly, just in my opinion. however, those of us who are into it in the slightest are absolutely either dancing, swinging, or throwing them as it best relates to the music.
so believe me, it's STILL all about the music. now can we put the debate to rest please? light shows should bring people joy at a show, not cause arguments

at hookahville a while back they shot a couple thousand glowsticks out of air cannons as part of the show. i wasnt there but it sounded like an awesome sight. i love the small fests where everyone is there to have fun and get crazy. the bigger fest seems to have a more 'diverse' crowd of people and some are more worried about what others are doing then they are about having a good time. seems to me like some are completely missing the show worrying about what other people are doing to enjoy the show. whether its tripping, drinking, smoking, dancing, sitting, standing, laying down, glowsticks etc... theres always gonna be someone that dosent know how to have a good time that will cry about something. i get lots of enjoyment from dancing around with glow/led stuff at shows. and i still love the music. i spend my time enjoying myself however i see fit. and if it somehow annoys you or you think its sad then it sounds like your the one that dosent know how to have a good time. but oh well i know im gonna have fun!! hope it dosent ruin anyones time. but thats on them not on me!!
We should all organize to throw up showers of Glowsticks this year during Message in a Bottle. Right when Sting says "sending" in the "sending out an s.o.s" part. It'd be totally epic, brah.

Just because you just found out what a glowstick war is doesn't mean you know how to have a good time and I don't. I have more than likely been to more shows and fests and seen more glowstick wars than you. It has nothing to do with crying about what other people do. While your more worried about when people throw their glowsticks or how your dance move looks I will just be plain enjoying myself. But to each their own. I think we can both enjoy ourselves.
^^^do you ever give up? Peace love and Bonnaroo - not "I'm right - you're wrong" We all have different attitudes about stuff and here's an old saying - "If ya can't say something nice - don't say anything at all"
