We were camping on the corner of Bushy Branch and Main St. Cannot remember the name of the area. One morning I woke up to yelling and chanting propaganda. It was a cult. Some guy with a beard holding a cross sign stating, "Jim Morrison, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix are all in hell and you will be soon." They had a little girl, maybe 12, with a pink shirt that said "Virginity Rocks" which it does, and she had a sign, can't remember what it said, something about going to hell. But anyway, did anyone else see these people? Were they the famous Westboro Baptist Church? We got some pretty good footage of it, the debates, the arguments, the madness, on tape, trying to figure out how to get it online.
Were they INSIDE the festival grounds? See, I think it's dumb for these people to buy tickets supporting something that they stand against. If I had seen them I might have thanked them for helping pay for my favorite bands to play.
Yeah, these are the same kinds of people I see all over my town all weekend. I live in Fayetteville, AR and we have a little place called Dickson Street just off the UofA campus that is the cultural and nightlife center of the town (and really Arkansas in general. I will be so bold as to say it!). They stand on the street corners every weekend with signs and such. People always start arguing with them, especially when after 11 after some liquoring up. It's funny.
I didn't see the whole group, but I saw someone on Saturday morning spewing some vitriol about homosexuals at the top of his lungs, with a sign that said "Leviticus 18:22". Some friends of friends told me about the people you met, though.

MAn I wish I could have seen them, I remember when I lived in Sevierville Tennessee there would always be 4 or 5 of these fire and brimstone spewing evangelicals yelling at the cars that were stopped at the stoplight. Scaring people into religious submission always struck me as funny. It's kind of ironic that the only people really spewing hatred and anger are the ones trying to convert us heathens to the peaceful salvation of Jesus. I like the Christians handing out water and show schedules. Oh and if Jimi, Jim and John are in hell then I better start sinning because that is one HELL of a lineup! ;D
We were on the edge of Pod 8 and noticed them walking in. It was a little surreal to wake up and see three huge crucifixes being carried into the farm.

I think what the man meant by "Radical' was definitely not meant to imply cult. I am Roman Catholic and some people (Jack Chick) call it a cult. Some people call Mormons a cult. What is the etymology of the word "cult?" I wish I had the Oxford English Dictionary on hand.
Anyway, if you have spent time in the small-town South for any length of time or even in the midwest, you would learn that these evangelical zealots are 99% of the time harmless. They are just loud. It does no good to argue with them cause you will never change their mind...and really, they are just begging for you to argue with them. Their bark is worst than their bite. If they offend you....well all I can say is toughen up, learn to ignore them or at least learn to get a good laugh out of them because sometimes these guys can be high comedy.
These guys were probably from Cleveland TN, Church of God of Prophecy. Generally any day of the week you can see someone pulling a cross up and down the roads there. In small town South there is variant upon variant of Protestant Christianity. Schisms happen all the time. Sometimes the defectors are way out there. Sometimes they are more tolerant.
Now, one group I absolutely loathe is that group out of ...Missouri I think, that pickets soldiers funerals saying they (soldiers) died because God is mad at the U.S. for it's tolerance of homosexuality. Whoa, these guys....yuck!

You mean the Westboro Baptist Church? Yeah, they are the scum of the earth. They pretty much loathe anyone who is not a white, Baptist, ultra-conservative, heterosexual American. For those who aren't familiar with them, their two websites are www.godhatesfags.com and www.godhatesamerica.com. That should give you some idea of their tolerance level. Fred Phelps and his crew are despicable monsters (and I don't use language like that lightly). They are a poor excuse for Americans, for Christians, and for human beings.
/end rant.

I'm from Fayettenam too! I really try my best to ignore those people on the corner of West and Dickson. But the people that upset me even more are the people that waste their time and breath by trying to sway these fundamentalists minds. IT WILL NOT WORK!! They have beliefs, however misguided, just as you and I do, but trying to REASON with that type of person is futile.
man, I hate living in the bible belt. In 06' we had a family of menonites offer us a road map, only to find later on that it was a "roadmap to hell" and it pointed out all of my flaws. Jesus' army will jump out at any opportunity that arises. Why can't they be more like the mormons?
Hey Oxford, have you ever been to the cheese rolling event in England? It looks like a hoot!
I'm an ex-pat Brit so I can add a little here. Cheese rolling takes place on Cooper's Hill near Stroud in Gloucestershire (about 20 miles from where I used to live, probably 80 miles from Oxford). This could never happen in a litigious country like the US for there is far too much alcohol and injury involved.

The first time I saw the christian picketing group at roo, I walked up to them and started dancing and singing "Jesus is just alright". They weren't amused. I think it was because I was dancing. Seriously.
It's not Westboro. We get "preachers" like that at our college all the time. Westboro is much much worse than any of them. All those cults are sad, too, because the children are brought up with all that hate and absorb it all. It's all just one big quacked up circle that has nothing to do with Christianity

There is this group, or a similar one, there every year. They stay on Brushy Branch since it is a public Hwy .
In '02 and '03 they were the same group that holds the "GOD HATES FAGS", "THANK GOD FOR 9/11" and "GOD HATES OUR SOLDIERS" signs at soldiers funerals. I have been camped a lot closer ot Centeroo every year since then so I have not seen them and so do not know if they are still the same group or a "new" one.
They are your basic Old Testament Christians that are all over the US, just a more vocal variety than some. Kind of feel sorry for their ignorant @sses
